Held Hostage by the Nightly Entertainment

PROS: very friendly staff, lots of choices at the buffet, water and air were the perfect temperature, beach sand was so soft and pretty white, the Presidents beer was very tasty. CONS: transport from airport was 90 minutes because the package had us routed to Santo Domingo airport rather than two MUCH closer airports, almost everything in our room had issues — from the shower that sprayed water all over the floor no matter how careful we were with the shower head, the a/c which couldn’t seem to keep the room cooler than mid 70’s, door handles and drawers that were broken, wiggly or off the track, lumpy pillows that had a musty odor, lamps that were ready to come apart, mini fridge that was only coolish, no way to pull draperies completely shut, doors that we’re so thin that we could hear every shrieking child in the hallways, the tropical drinks did not taste fresh and had an odd imitation sweetness to them. But the WORST THING was the nightly musical entertainment that blared across the pol deck into our side of the resort until 11pm! We would have been okay with a cutoff time of 10pm, but seriously that was ridiculous! Other annoyances were the rude European guests who never greeted others and pushed their way to the front of every person me, the fact that we had to get our own drinks several time’s a day because there weren’t enough servers at the beach, the rules and prohibited areas because we opted not to spend the extra $$ for the Preferred Club (wasn’t worth the upcharge frankly). Overall, we enjoyed the trip and the grounds and beach and pools, but felt the resort is in need of an upgrade. Next time we will opt for a more upscale resort that caters to relaxation, quiet and adults only. We noticed that lots of families were having a great time and many others also happily participated in the noisy activities and daily water aerobics, so maybe it just wasn’t Ruhr place for us.

Pretty Disappointing

My fiancé and I spent a week at Dreams in March. Overall, we were disappointed. I will break down my review based on the categories above… Overall: The resort was OK. The landscaping was kind of sad (a lot of dead grass), and some of the staff was friendly. It was about an hour and a half drive from the airport in Santo Domingo. I would not recommend this report, mostly because of the food. It was awful. Value: Our first room was in the regular family section right near the pool area. It was VERY loud. We like to nap in the afternoon and that wouldn’t have been possible, so we ended up upgrading to the adult’s only exclusive side of the resort. We were promised top shelf liquor, our own lobby with food and drinks, an adults only pool, and section on the beach. The room was much quieter and the people in the lobby were friendly, but it was not worth the money to update. The food in the lobby was usually pretty gross, and the liquor may have been in top shelf bottles, but it was NOT top shelf. I got a Bombay Sapphire and soda water and it tasted like soapy water. We did not use the pool, but the area looked nice. The adults only section of the beach was very small and right near the other sections. We never actually sat in that area. Service: I was actually surprised by how rude most of the bar tenders were. All of the outdoor bars closed at 6pm, which was ridiculous, and if you walked to one of the outdoor bars after 6pm, the bar tenders would just avoid making eye contact with you instead of telling you the bar was closed. They also had people walking around the beach taking drink orders, but they were few and far between and would take more than twenty minutes to return with your drink. Most employees didn’t even say hello if you didn’t say hello first. There were some great servers at the restaurants (Willy at the French restaurant was great), but overall we were not impressed with the service. Beach & Pools: As I explained above, we did not use the pools. A lot of the beach was not sandy, but soft of a rock or coral ledge. It was pretty, but you had to walk to sets of steps to actually get in the water. Also, the resort was right next to a public beach where a lot of excursions took off from. The positive part about that was that if you wanted to do a snorkeling/fishing/any other boat excursion, you could get picked up right from the beach at the hotel. However, I smelled gas most of the day sitting on the beach. If you like to snorkel, there is a reef in front of the hotel beach that you can swim too. Just watch out for boat traffic! Dining Options: The food had to be the most disappointing part of the whole trip. Not only was the food terrible, but it made is sick. I have been home for almost a week and my stomach still isn’t right. Aside from fried eggs in the morning, I did not eat a single thing that I enjoyed at the report. It was TERRIBLE!!! Also, I was almost impossible to get water at the restaurants. If you asked for water, if it came at all, someone would fill your class about a quarter of the way and then never come to refill it again. The same was true for alcohol. Servers were not very attentive about refilling glasses in general. Room Comfort: Our housekeeper was excellent. And the room was comfortable. However, on our third night, water was leaking from our ceiling. We called the front desk and maintenance came to resolve the issue, but the man did not speak English so he couldn’t tell us where the water was coming from. It could have been from the toilet of the room upstairs! We have no idea. The maintenance guy also left without cleaning up all of the water and without saying anything to us! I called the front desk and asked them to send someone to clean up the rest of the water, and they did, but no one could tell us where the water came from. Two days later when we got back to our room from the beach there was a plate of fruit, a bottle of champagne, a small can of pringles, a bag of peanut M&Ms, and several airplane bottles of whiskey in our room. There was no apology, but we assumed the gifts were because of the leak?

Great Resort

This was our fifth vacation at this resort. We reserved the Preferred Adult Only section and it was a blast even for the fifth time. Services were excellent and seems better after each visit. I would recommend to any one anytime.

What's to Love

Cool towels and sparkling champagne - palate cleansers after the trek from the real world to Beach Heaven.

It's on an eco-friendly beach along a mind-blowing turquoise sea surrounded by a tropical wonderland.

Explorer's club (kids 3-12) that offers everything from sand castle competitions to arts & crafts.

Red Cross certified staff supervise the aforementioned club. A relief, right?

Parents get a pager from the Explorer's club, should they be needed for anything.

Italian-inspired architecture and manicured gardens that reflect a Mediterranean seaside paradise.

The Brazilian restaurant with churrasco-style cuisine and the lobster restaurant on the pier.

Colonially-inspired family-sized suites with classic decor and private balconies or terraces.

Luxury bath amenities sweeten the pot.

Butlers greeting you after excursions with chilled towels and tasty tropical drinks. This rocks.

The stress-squashing spa with palapas for oceanside massages and Jojoba Oil body exfoliations.

Outdoor hydrotherapy whirlpool baths, two saunas and a Vichy shower.

What We'd Change

The resort is pretty big, which makes for a lot of walking, but that way you can work off all the delicious food!

Why You Should Go

Only 40 minutes from two airports. Either way you get here, you can exhale - you're faraway from reality.

Upgrade to the Preferred Club and get upgraded rooms, access to a private lounge, and much more.

Golf at Teeth of the Dog, The Links and Dye Fore designed by architect Pete B. Dye.

The reef that's right off the beach is full of beautiful fish.

You can take a catamaran, sailboat or speedboat (hang on to your hats!) to dreamy Soana Island.

Catalina Island and Altos de Chavon are also a whisper away.

Rent a private pool for four for a day with the Corner Pool Package!

Connecting rooms, rollaway beds and cribs are available. Just ask.

You can try you luck (or lose your money) at blackjack, roulette and slot machines at the onsite casino.

There are tennis courts (with clinics) along with bike rentals. Woot!

Get your feet (and body) wet with boogie boarding, kayaks, snorkeling, and scuba diving (for a fee).

For laid-back chilling, catch some billiards, dance classes, and a giant chess board.

There's an inflatable iceberg on the beach, plus kids love the Euro-bungee and ocean trampoline.
