Cancun Overview

    Mapping Out Mexico

Let’s start with the east coast: Cancun’s got an epic party scene. Cozumel is the mecca for diving and snorkeling. On the west coast, if you’re into adventure, head to Mazatlan to explore historic ruins or hit Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo for a similar vibe, but a bit more upscale. For those who want to escape into the wilds of nature, Huatulco and Mazanillo are your places to explore. Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos have majestic mountains that kiss their beachy shores, along with fantastic golf courses, breathtaking resorts and delicious beaches. But Cabo, situated at the tip of Baja California, where the shimmering Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific, not only has a hip party vibe, it also has the iconic Los Arcos, where you can slow down and let the beguiling magic of Mexico wash over you.

  • Natural Caves & Cenotes

After years of heavy foot traffic, hurricanes and the natural progression of these enchanting phenomena are natural pits, or sinkholes, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. Once inside, you can see geological formations such as stalactites and stalagmites, which are spectacular. The word “cenote” was derived from the Mayan word “dzonot,” which means "sacred well" because they were considered the entrance to the mystical Mayan underworld. In and around Cancun, you’ll have many magical water systems to choose from. You can swim, float, jump in or just chill. There’s nothing quite like them.

  • Mayan Ruins

The majesty and influence of the Mayans here is undeniable and continues to attract travelers time and time again. The iconic stepped pyramids, along with the history and mystique of the Mayan culture can be felt–and seen–nearly everywhere: Tulum, Chichen Itza and Coba are great ruins to check out. And here’s the good news: many locations are accessible by bus, car or one of the many tours offered in the area. But bring your walking shoes and sunscreen. The sun can be intense. You can even take the stairs down to the beach afterwards to cool off. For a non-beach day in Cancun, do a little time traveling and channel your inner archaeologist.
