Dive Into Montego Bay

Even as the reggae music beats and bustling tourists take advantage of duty-free shopping, you can still find quiet seclusion for a restful and relaxing vacation. You can book your stay at some of the best resorts in this delightfully colorful town. And golf enthusiasts will want to tee-it-up because Mo Bay is home to some of the best golf in the West Indies. You can also enjoy visiting historic plantations, snorkeling in the crystal clear waters or relaxing with a frothy tropical drink. Montego Bay brings together everything you'd want in one location that you’ll never forget.

Montego Bay Overview

  • Fore!

Tee it up at Cinnamon Hill Ocean Course at Rose Hall for the best golfing challenge in Jamaica. You’ll get to see panoramic views of the ocean, lush vegetation on Mount Zion and a cascading waterfall. Even if you don't play, you might want to check out this 400-acre beauty.

The course is set on an old sugar plantation with a winding, old aqueduct that used to grind sugarcane. When you look at it closely, you can see it's dated 1761. Not only is there so much history here, but you can also play a serious round of golf. Plus, the course is famous for its caddies, considered some of the best. If you need a little help with your game, then they can help you out!

Make sure you grab your camera for a photo op on hole #6 because the ocean view here is spectacular.
  • We Jammin'

When you visit Jamaica, you'll hear plenty of reggae. You'll probably grow to love the music even more than you already do. If you really want to experience the sounds of the island, then plan your vacation in July when Montego Bay comes alive with this rockin’ reggae music festival.

“Reggae Sumfest” is the biggest reggae party of the year and includes performances by local musicians and international superstars. The week-long party includes plenty of food, drinks and beach parties. You might consider VIP tickets so you’ll be closest to the stage. And, the ground might get a little uncomfortable, so make sure you bring your own lawn chair or rent one at the venue. Rest up because these parties can last all night at this rockin' festival.
  • Just What the Doctor Ordered

For over 100 years, Doctor's Cave Beach has been Montego Bay’s best beach spot. Considered the prettiest on this side of Jamaica, the white sands and crystal blue waters you'll find here are a great place for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. It's a busy place, with shops, beach bars, cyber cafes and more to keep the whole family entertained. But, it is well-maintained and clean and you'll love having the showers on-site when you finish up your day splashing around in the ocean. You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas to use for the day, which is a great way to make a central meeting spot for the family. With lots of activities along the beach, you'll really love spending the day here!
  • Annie Palmer Was Here

Jamaica has a rich history of sugar plantations and if you can only visit one, then plan to see Rose Hall Great House. Considered the most popular plantation in Jamaica and one of the largest, the Rose Hall Great House even comes with the legend of being haunted by its former owner, Annie Palmer. Known for her “black magic” powers, Annie "did away with" three of her husbands and countless lovers. Your tour will take you through all the nooks and crannies of this plantation. And, at the end of your tour, enjoy a drink at Annie’s Pub located on the ground floor.

Tips & Transportation

  • Belly Up to this Local Favorite

Cooked in a traditional-style, open-air barbecue, you'll love the spicy jerk chicken, pork or fish at Scotchies. Your food comes wrapped in foil so you can either eat at the restaurant or take it with you. And the prices are reasonable! Don't be fooled by its simple exterior because once you get inside, you'll find a stocked bar, a great staff and plenty of authentic Jamaican flavors.
  • Caribbean Creativity

This 40 year old store is filled with handmade furniture, gifts and original art. Gallery of West Indian Art is most famous for its hand carved wooden animals painted in bright colors with white acrylic polka dots painted on them. You'll love meeting the gallery owners and seeing the eclectic collection of Caribbean art, handmade pottery, tables and chairs designed by noted Caribbean artists. It's worth stopping in to see the creativity, the color and the unique pieces that represent many Caribbean islands.
  • Get Back to Nature

If you're looking to really get away from it all and enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes in Montego Bay, Cockpit County is a hidden gem not far away and well-worth the trip. The land is mostly untouched and the caves travel deep into Jamaica. You can hike, tour caves, see waterfalls and spend some time surrounded by Jamaica's natural landscapes. You'll want to book a guide for the day so they can tell you all the interesting facts about the area. Grab your camera because the scenery is absolutely breathtaking!
  • Tequila Sunrise

If you're an early riser, or even if you're not, set your alarm and head over to the Hip Strip and catch the sun rising over the ocean. Watching the sun slowly rise over the ocean is a great way to start the day. Afterwards, grab breakfast at The Pelican Restaurant off Gloucester Avenue. This family owned and operated restaurant has been serving food and drinks for almost 50 years!
  • Fun on the Farm

About 20 minutes from Montego Bay, you'll find Animal Farm. The farm is over 40-acres of forest reserve and home to all kinds of exotic birds and animals. And, yes, the name is Animal Farm! If you're looking for something different to do with the kids, check out this fun farm. And, you can also take on a bamboo raft tour, hike some trails or visit the butterfly house.
  • Airport

There are two major international airports on the island: Kingston's Norman Manley Airport (KIN) in the southeast and Sangster Airport in Montego Bay (MBJ) on the northwest coast. Montego Bay is the most convenient airport to the tourist destinations of Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios.
  • Immigration & Customs

Complete the immigration form while in flight. Make sure to fill out your immigration form, including departure information before entering immigration. Otherwise you’ll lose your place in line. Getting through immigration in Jamaica will be time consuming. Keep your travel documents together: immigration form, customs declaration form, valid passport and return tickets.

Once you clear immigration, move to customs. Be prepared for your luggage to be checked. You’ll move to one of three lines: nothing to declare, passengers with items to declare, or special passengers, wheel chair passengers and unaccompanied minors. Items for declaration should be accompanied by an invoice and should be listed on the Customs Declaration Form. Members of the same family may use one form (i.e. mother, father and their children under 18 years old). Passengers over 18 years are required to complete their own Declaration Forms. Passengers are required to present their passport, along with the Customs Declaration Form and relevant receipts, for processing. Payment of duties, if any, may be made using cash, VISA or MasterCard credit cards or certified cheques as well as Multi-Link (debit and credit) cards.
