Great service. Stop there

Asides fantastic staff, pools and beach, it's a average facility that needs updates and TLC. Don't expect inclusive drinks in your room or multiple food options 247. Avoid rooms near dino land they're half mile walk from resteraunts,, Bars and the beach. Additionaly 3 of the 7 in our group became sick st the same time as did others from others groups.. Reported it to staff, no-one seamed to care

You Get What You Pay For

My fiancé and I just returned from 7 days at Sunscape Akumal. We have both traveled extensively staying at both high-end and budget resorts/hotels. I have even stayed at nearly a dozen resorts in the Yucatan Peninsula alone. Immediately following check-in we were escorted to a table and provided information about the resort. After a whirlwind explanation we were “asked” to answer one thing at that moment. We were then presented an opportunity to visit a nearby sister resort for breakfast and a tour. The visit would take 90 minutes, and we would receive a credit for either cash, spa services, or a romantic beach dinner. We were also provided the additional opportunity to claim a free 3 day stay at another Sunscape resort. We were promised this was not a timeshare or sales pitch and rather a chance to show another resort and encourage continued brand loyalty. We agreed to attend and were then told we must bring credit cards and ID to confirm that we have Mastercard, Visa, or AMEX. This raised some red flags and after scouring reviews I found that this was in fact a hard sales-pitch to join their vacation club. We felt this was a bit deceptive. We were ill on the morning we were supposed to attend, tried calling the front desk and concierge to cancel, but were unable to reach anyone after several calls. The hotel description is also misleading. It is not a brand-new hotel, nor has it been completely renovated. Our room was in an older condominium building about ¼ mile from the lobby where some rooms are owned by the hotel and some are privately owned. Our room was on the 3rd floor through multiple doors and up several staircases. When we got to our room our key didn’t work. The staff who brought our luggage used his master key and said we should go back to the front desk later and get new keys. Unfortunately, after the front desk assured us that the keys were correct and they sent someone to repair the door, our keys still did not work and we had to return again to the front desk and wait 20 minutes for new keys. Whenever I’ve had this happen before, they would send someone up with new keys to our room rather than requiring us to go back and forth several times. The room was large, had a beautiful ocean view, small balcony, and high ceilings. There was a large puddle on the floor but we threw down some towels and moved on. After a rain shower on another day the flooding returned, but again we just put down towels rather than bothering staff. The shower doesn’t have a door and is only half enclosed. When we showered we would need several towels for the floor around the entry. The first night we had no hot water but had no issues the remainder of our stay. The AC worked, but not very well. The TV reception was poor: lots of flickering stations, loud humming noises on other stations, and lost signal. The bed was comfortable but only 3 pillows were provided . We both use more than one and have never had to request more before. Even with cool nights in the upper 60s the room remained in the mid-70s the entire time. We requested maintenance but it didn’t seem to help. The biggest problem we had with the room was every few minutes it sounded like a loud AC unit was trying to turn on and then would stop after half a minute. Even when our AC was turned off it still occurred. Maintenance didn’t fix it. It was loud enough that it kept me from falling asleep and would wake me up if I happened to drift off. I had brought earplugs for the plane and ended up using them the entire time just so I could get some sleep, fiancé put pillows over his head. We were also told we could request specific items be restocked in our minibar. Later we found out that only water would be restocked without gratuity. Again, seems misleading. After the second day, our room was never cleaned, towels were not provided, and the minibar was not restocked. Most days we were out of the room very early and stayed out until before dinner when we would go back and shower and change. This was frustrating because when we would return and find it wasn’t cleaned, we didn’t want to call and request cleaning at that time because we were in the room. The advertised 24-hour availability of food and drinks is also misleading. On our first day, after a long day of travel we were starving and went to grab a quick late-lunch/early-dinner. All the restaurants, except for the café that typically only had apples and some dry chocolate chip cookies, were closed for the next 1 ½ hours. Breakfast began at 7:00 am and ended at 11:30 am. Lunch doesn’t begin until 12:30 pm and ends before anywhere opens for dinner at 6:00 pm. And dinner ends at 10:00-11:00 pm, but they stop seating, even at the buffet, 1/2 hour before closing. This was inconvenient particularly when leaving for tours before breakfast, returning or arriving after a long day during closed hours, or wanting to just eat at a later hour. Our solution one night when we were unable to make it to dinner before 9:30 pm was to try and order room service. We were never able to reach anyone at room service, the front desk, or concierge by phone. I understand that there food is often available, but it is far from the advertised 24-hour availability. The bars also open later than I expected and almost all close by 6:00pm. Since we aren’t the type to drink all day or every day, it was frustrating to find that when we wanted to enjoy an evening cocktail, we either had to go to the lobby or the sports bar. The food wasn’t great, but it wasn’t horrible. Be prepared if going anywhere other than the buffet that you WILL be there for 2-3 hours. And other than the buffet, men must wear long pants and no flip flops (even when the dining room AC isn't working and it's boiling hot). If you have kids, there is a large kid friendly area with pools, slides, fountains, a small self-serve buffet and hot dogs and hamburgers, and swim up bars for with kid and adult friendly beverages. It looked like there were also indoor activities for kids and babysitting at night. The beach was beautiful. People get there early and claim lounges with towels for the day, so you need to do the same if you want a prime spot. The staff will help you find and move chairs if needed. They also provide snorkels, paddleboards, and kayaks free for the first 30min-1hour. The snorkeling is totally worth it! I have to give specific praise for the concierge who helped us on the last day when our transport to the hotel didn’t arrive (we found out he was in an accident). Concierge spoke to our transport company, quickly got a local taxi, arranged for transport company to pay the taxi on arrival to the airport, and provided both the taxi driver and transport company all the necessary information. In a moment of stress, he really helped us out! Overall, it was little things that added up. If we had paid more we would have been very upset, but for the price it wasn’t bad. We had a great time but wouldn’t return.

Family Vacation

We take a family trip each January. My husband and me prefer all inclusive resorts for ease of planning. When we booked this trip, we were a little nervous as the Sunscape in Jamaica wasn’t what we expected. Sunscape Akumal exceeded our expectations! Room was gorgeous and the pool view was beautiful. We didn’t like the lack of privacy for the bathroom. We upgraded to the Sun Club option. We had a private check in and out. We had to request that our mini bar be restocked daily (this wasn’t automatic and we found that’s bit strange. Room service was a nice plus and we used this option several times as the restaurants require long pants for men and we didn’t pack for that (our fault- it’s listed on the site) the bar tenders were all very friendly and helped my kids with non-alcoholic drinks. The pools were beautiful but the beach is where it’s at! Stunning! We did take an excursion this trip (swam with dolphins and it was beyond worth it! Memories for a lifetime! We are leaving today and hoping to come back soon!
