Great Value
We had a great two weeks. Fantastic value with great accommodation and outstanding selection of food. Great selection of drinks too - however our only criticism is the choice of beer was poor with the only option being poor in taste. I found I had to bring in my own beer from outside the complex.

A fantastic place, with amazing staff
We stayed at the Tequila for our 25th wedding anniversary. When we booked we took our time and carefully chose this hotel as we wanted to ensure that we could almost guarantee we would have a great holiday. We were not disappointed! Food Lots of food choices available and all of it well prepared and presented. Our favourite was the Italian we ate there most often. The steak house seemed popular but in our opinion over rated. We also enjoyed the Asian restaurant but found the food in the Mexican themed restaurant lacking in flavour. If all else fails, the buffet offers a wide range of choice that would suit most preferences. Drink Amazing choice of [alcoholic and non alcoholic] cocktails available but make sure you ask for branded spirits. There is a trolley service around the pool. We avoided the pool bar as most people didn't appear to visit the toilet very often! The beer was good. Entertainment Lots of daytime activities and the team were not too pushy to get involved. Good options for the evening and the activities appealed to all age groups. The weekly party nights were busy and fun; but it was possible to avoid the crowds if that isn't your thing. Pools There were plenty of pools which were busy and it was vital to get there early if you wanted a prime location. Beach A nice sandy beach with plenty of sunbeds available. The staff were attempting to deal with the seaweed but it is difficult to beat mother nature! There is transport to the beach but we didn't use this as there is a covered walkway and the walk was enjoyable and not that far. The sellers on the beach were not too pushy and tended to leave you alone. Staff Without exception the staff in all areas of the hotel, were hard working and clearly cared about the needs of their guests. The management were very visible and it was clear they drove the high standards. We visited the sister hotel - The Riu Yakatan on several occasions [the beach buffet] and the “Tequila staff” were far better! Room The room was a good size with plenty of storage. We have marked this down to 4 as some of the furniture was well used and perhaps the room could have used a fresh lick of paint. We obviously appreciate that the rooms are heavily used by a variety of people. We requested a quieter room which we were given.

Amazing amazing amazing but watch out if you have allergies
We have just got back from 10 nights and are so sad to have left. We had an amazing time and can’t thank Riu and TUI enough. For such a big resort, this place looks like it runs effortlessly and it’s due to the staff being so dedicated and thorough. Everyone was so friendly and couldn’t do more to make this a relaxing stay. Our rooms were beautiful and each time we asked for our room to be cleaned, we came back to an impeccably clean room with a little towel art each time too, which was such a thoughtful gesture and added to my daughters day. You can see how high of a standard this hotel is because there is always a cleaner in site, cleaning but also cleaning areas some hotels forget. They even put balloons in my room for my birthday which blew me away and I was so grateful for, so thank you, thank you, thank you. Lupita from the entertainment team (who I believe had her last day when we were there) especially brought a smile to our faces each day with her positivity and high energy and Laura who was one of the waitresses really added a lovely feel to each dinner, when we saw her as she always had such a big smile . Having said this, ALL the staff were incredible from reception through to the bar staff, the lifeguards, the cleaners, the entertainment team, the waitresses and waiters, the chefs, the security, the men who helped us to ours rooms with our bags - honestly just everyone. For working such long hours, they always had a smile on their face and this really didn’t get overlooked at all. There’s so much to do at the complex, from fitness classes to entertainment around the pool and the entertainment team do their upmost to let you know you are a part of that if you want to be, without pressuring you. You and your family won’t be bored for a minute. We could have easily stayed 3 weeks and still have things we wanted to do. The beach is literally a 5 minute walk and the buggy is frequent if you want to take that instead. I absolutely love that you can access the other hotel at the beach. It made all the difference as it’s nice to know you can get a cool drink there and step out of the sun when the heat gets too strong. The beach is absolutely stunning too. White sands. Plenty of beds, water sports, volley ball and shaded spots too. Honestly I felt like I was on a film set at times, it was so picturesque. Back at Riu Tequila, there are several pools and the drinks and ice creams are always available as the bars close by to each pool, but also staff are constantly coming and taking orders or bringing trolleys around so you don’t have to lift a finger. Holiday mode was very quickly activated. There are lots of places to eat at in the evenings and it’s so nice that you can eat there as many times as you wish, rather than being limited to one night like some other resorts. There’s the main restaurant, a Mexican on the beach, an Italian, Steak house and Asian restaurant plus lunch available at the pool bar. We loved the attention to detail in each of the restaurants in terms of the decor, which really reflected each theme. We loved the Asian food at Bamboo so much and went several times - it felt more intimate than the big restaurant too which was a nice contrast on those nights. The steak house was really good but we would have preferred to have only had one night access here and have got a thicker and more decent steak (one which reflects the advertisement on the reception board and on the menu) as ours was very flat and fatty. I understand the cost of providing steak so that’s why I’d have preferred just the one night but to have come out saying I’d had a good steak. Unfortunately I didn’t on this occasion. There’s entertainment on each night which is great for the kids and the taxis cost very little to take you into the town if you fancy a change of scenery and have an older child (like mine). There are lots of bars and it’s a really good vibe there. We also did a day of shopping as it has all the big high street names and that was a really nice experience to break the week up from sunbeds and cocktails and we also found a really cute authentic Mexican cafe to enjoy the local food away from the complex. It was around 10USD in a taxi so not bad at all. Taxis are always available and it is walkable if you’d rather get the steps in. Would highly recommend the excursion to Chichen Itza and Day of the Dead. We booked through the TUI Team who were super friendly, helpful and informative and at no point did we have to worry about a thing. We just knew it was all sorted so thank you TUI and to the tour guides too. My only only criticism if I had to leave any is down to my own allergies and the catering around this. I would definitely book again if I knew that this was something that could be catered for in some way, all as the rest of the holiday was a total dream, but I had a few days in bed really unwell because of the following. I am allergic to dairy and whilst there are clear labels to indicate allergens in the canteen and on the menus, it felt a little bit like they were there for show sometimes. Usually, when eating out, I’ll just get meat or fish with vegetables in order to play it safe but I found the veg often didn’t have an allergen label attached (so I assumed it was ok for me) but it was in actual fact covered in butter. This was the same for other dishes like the plain rice, the prawns, the sushi. They actually stated no milk and in fact did, hence me being unwell. In the steak house, I was lucky enough to speak to a waiter who had really good knowledge on the ingredients as even the steak which was indicated as possible for me had sweetcorn made with butter and cinnamon. I did try to ask a few members of staff about foods to check but they didn’t know, even when I was asking in Spanish so perhaps a wristband to indicate allergies would be useful and a real clamp down on knowing what is what as I know allergies can lead to more serious reactions than mine. I did feel like I was playing Russian roulette some nights with the food and in the end just ate fruit which wasn’t the best given the selection available. As I said, this didn’t taint my view of the hotel as I know allergens can be hard to cater for. So thank you Riu for the most incredible time.

Great times at Riu Tequila
The RIU Tequila is a fun place to stay at. The nightly shows, the variety of the food, the weekly club party were awesome, and an actual night club on the site was cool. The grounds are well taken care of and I enjoyed the local animals strolling around. In my opinion the pools were OK, but I believe other hotels have better pools. The site itself is in PlayaCar, so only taxis can get inside. This means they have the ability to charge extra for trips outside of playaCar. We went to the Xenote Azul and the cheapest they would charge was 800 pesos, which is well over $40 before tip and that was after bartering. The staff is awesome, but I do see them catering to European, American and Canadian guests over Mexican guests. This is a bummer, but this happens all throughout Mexico since they perceive that they have more money for tipping. Again, this happens all throughout Latin America and the funny thing is all the guests that they cater to were not tipping at all and we were LOL. Overall, the experience is great and we would stay there again without hesitation. My kids loved it, this was our first time doing all inclusive.
