Great Winer Sun Getaway
We travelled from Manchester to Cancun in Tui premium cabin (separate review). Arrived at hotel after 45 minutes on the Tui coach. Welcome from check in staff was excellent & fruit cocktail provided during the swift check in. The room was spotless with everything you could possibly need. We asked for some extra hangers which were delivered in a few minutes. Face cloths, lots of clean towels & shower gel provided. Minibar restocked regularly with water beer & soft drinks. Optics above had spirits & there is an ice machine in each villa block. Iron/board & free safe in room & laundry service available. There were 5 pools. One large quieter pool, Two activity pools, a swim up bar pool & a children’s pool. I think it would be great if one pool could be adult only as while we were there every area seemed to have a lot of screaming young children. Lots of bars to choose from & every member of staff was fantastic at their job. There was a wide variety of drinks to suit everybody. My favourite was Prosecco. We followed the Canadian’s lead & bought Bubba insulated cups from a shop a few minutes walk from the Tequila. We found the buffet restaurant food choice amazing but it wasn’t always hot (they did have a microwave to re-heat). All the wait staff were friendly & helpful. We tried the Steak House & Italian but the food was cold in both - maybe because air con was so cold. Plenty of poolside or beachside (Rui Yucatan) activities through the day. The entertainment team work very hard. Some days we were served ice creams/drinks from carts at our sun beds. Brenda the lady who gave out pool towels was a joy & helped me learn a bit more Spanish. They have racoon like animals called coatis who are cheeky & will try to steal your food/drinks if you leave on the floor around the pool. They are harmless & really good fun to watch running around from your balcony. There are also Agoutis a bit like big squirrels they are quite shy but love bananas. Wasn’t sure what to expect re night entertainment but we really enjoyed it. Michael Jackson,Abba, white night & Neon party were brilliant. Check out was 12 midday but as we were leaving a bit later we were given a voucher to use at any of the eateries/bars until we left. My only slight disappointment with Tui was that on the return to Cancun airport the coach took almost 3 hours. Next time we would book a private transfer. This was a lovely holiday & hope the travel situation improves soon. Any questions just message me & I’ll try to help 😎
March 5-12 couples vacation
The hotel was great! Very clean and the room was nice. We asked for a king bed at booking but received two doubles. The staff was quick to correct this and accommodate our request. The hotel is advertised as beach front but it isn’t. There is a private path to the beach which is about a 5 min walk so not bad at all. The beach was awesome and very large. There are a lot of beach chairs so no need to get up early to save one. We were able to get chairs at any time of the day. The buffet was one of the better buffets of any hotel I’ve stayed at. Tones of options for all dietary restrictions.
My 15 year old son and I stayed at the Riu Tequila from March 5th - 12th. We had a great time. Pros: Check in was speedy and professional Beautiful grounds, very clean rooms, huge buffet, 5 restaurants to choose from for dinner every night and only 1 requires reservations, great Friday night white party, very nice 5 min walk to the beach and the beach is absolutely beautiful with very soft white sand - blue waters and very clean Cons: too many smoking areas, too many smokers!! Wish they had a designated non-smoking pool, and not have ashtrays set up on both sides of the walkways - creating an unavoidable curtain of smoke. Would prefer a door for the vanity bathroom area because not everyone travelling is a couple. Staff were all very professional, kind and helpful, except on check out we dealt with Ezekiel (sp?) on the front desk who was the only rude/ignorant employee.
Good hotel but perhaps more suited to families or younger clientele.
Enjoyed our stay here, we had a nice friendly welcome on arrival, with a complimentary drink, and check in was quick and easy. We had requested a low floor room, near to pool and facilities and we got exactly that. Rooms are spacious, well furnished with two comfortable double beds, plenty of storage, large dressing/bathroom area with double sinks and a large walk in shower and separate toilet. We also had a stocked mini bar, replenished daily and four optic spirits in the bar area, sadly no tea/coffee facilities. The room, as was all the hotel was immaculate and very well maintained. Staff in all areas are a real credit to this hotel, restaurant and bar staff are so friendly and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble, special thanks to Ezequiel for looking after us so well in the buffet restaurant. There are five pools, again well maintained, always being cleaned, beds and tables washed and surrounding floor areas cleaned. Jose kept our favourite spot leaf free and spotless, sometimes a never ending task. We just wished there was a quiet pool where you could get away from the entertainments, foam parties etc. which are not to everyone’s taste although the entertainment team work very hard. They also put on several ‘Party Nights’, a White Party and Neon Party, bit too loud for us and as the area is open air adjacent to the main reception there is no where to escape. Other entertainment consisted of various shows, Abba Tribute etc., all very professional. Food we found generally very good, main buffet changes it’s themes each night and there are also a further four a la carte style restaurants, Japanese/Asian, Steak, Mexican and Italian. Wine however was the same served in each one and was a poor quality in our opinion. Grounds of the hotel are park like and very attractive with hotel rooms mainly in two storey blocks of approximately 16 rooms. Wi-fi was good so was aircon and there are safes and iron and board in the rooms. The lovely white sand beach is approx. 5 mins. walk under a pleasant covered walkway adjacent to the sister hotel, Yucatan. There is also a mini train if you don’t feel like walking and a nice shopping mall, mainly touristy shops, approx. 5 mins. walk., Playa Del Carmen is 30 mins. walk or approx. £5 in a taxi. The area around the hotel feels really safe, in fact it’s in a gated community of luxury hotels and private villas with security guards checking as you enter or leave. Overall we enjoyed our stay and were particularly grateful for the small gift and room decoration for a birthday celebration whilst we were there. Should we return to Playacar we would perhaps look for a quieter hotel, although in fairness to Riu they have other sister hotels which you can use as part of the package if you so wish.
We spent two weeks here. The hotel has a five star rating, three would be more accurate Firstly. The staff were excellent, very pleasant and worked very hard. Secondly. The hotel and grounds were clean and neat in all areas. No complaints in this area. Thirdly. The restaurants. Main buffet was always noisey, more like a canteen. The food was in the main, very average and generally overcooked, except the boiled eggs which were almost raw. Cold meats always full of water. Very limited Mexican fare, which was dried up most of the time. The pizza's however were first class. The Steakhouse was very poor. First night my wife was served uncooked chicken, still bloody! Second time cold ribs, replaced with more cold ribs. Steak very tough. Everything precooked and reheated. The Italian and Asian however were good. The rooms are basic but clean. However very noisy with doors slamming and general noise due to the type of construction. Could also hear people urinating in the room above. The pool areas are crowded but ok. Plenty of sunbeds. They also come around with drinks. Good mix of nationalities mixing in the pool. We only went to the beach once as it was a little windy. We used the buffet there and was better than the main one. The entertainment apart from the Neon night was poor. The sound system was not set properly so difficult to hear. The Neon night was a class above with a great guitarist and saxophonist. I think these were a group who are separate from the hotel We have gone to Mexico several times and this was the poorest hotel we have stayed in, so we won't return. I will repeat however the staff were wonderful I would not recommend this hotel, there are far better to be had
