Great winter sun break
Travelled here with my husband and family for a 40th birthday celebration. When you first turn up the complex seems huge, but you soon get used to it and it is great having so much choice of restaurants, bars and pools. You could never get bored here. The golf carts that ferry you around the complex are brilliant and the drivers are always full of fun. Good selection of restaurants and bars, although my only criticism is that you can't always get in when you want and have to book in advance. All the staff at the hotel are genuine and can't do enough for you. They all work very hard. Special mention to Cynthia Mayakj (the concierge for Blocks 82 and 83). Cynthia went out of her way to help us with booking the a la carte restaurants and just with general information around the hotel and always had a huge smile on her face - nothing was too much trouble. She gave great customer service and is a credit to your hotel.
be careful of upgrades
I was here for 10 days in February.. Wanted a private and Quiet room so upgraded to building 83 on south side with consierge... Checked in at 10pm and it was great - until the next morning when the construction of a new hotel to the south of our room woke us up and was so noisey day and evening - that we could not leave our door open or sit on deck - we could see and hear ocean from our deck/room, but not with the cranes, jack hammers, pounding, etc. We kept thinking it would get better, quieter, but it only got worse... They even worked on Sunday to our surprise. We did not complain to the consierge because we did not want the hassle of changing room (always hard at this resort) but we asked when we got home for the $217 upgrade to be refunded... They recognized that the noise was a problem but would not refund the money because we had not "complained" at the time.. Had a few ofther problems that were addressed but not all solved - one was jacuzzi - they finally fixed it but it had so much scum we could not use it. Food is better here than at the Barcelo to the north, but food is better at the Dreams to the south. Of course, price reflects this too. This resort is really big... Also, beach in front of Akumal section is just OK - has rocks on 3 ocean sides because it really is man made.. Tulum part has better beach, but is much more crowded... but better for kids and our section was adults only as was the pool... Have been here many times and was disappointed in the response from my request for the $217 back...
Very good considering the situation
Firstly, I would like to say all this happened just after the corona virus break out and the situation all over the world was changing every minute. Initially we booked to stay at Tulum as Akumal wasn’t available through Tui website. Luckily we got upgraded on arrival (so did everyone else) as they were closing Tulum part of the hotel due to a lack of guests arriving to the hotel as many counties closed their borders for travel. We had to move our room twice during or 10 night stay because they were closing further areas of the hotel and by the last couple of days, all the remaining guest were staying in the villas 82 and 83. We started off at 5006 - nice ground floor room with shower, but with twin beds rathen than double. Then we moved to 5413, again a lovely room with a massive king size bed and a shower over a whirlpool bath. Our last room was also 83336 and I have to agree with one of the previous reviews, room is nice and clean, lots of stairs to get there, but good to keep us fit, and the shower was leaking all over the floor. I was a bit disappointed after seeing lots of the other doors decorated with “happy birthday” or “happy anniversary” ribbons and last time our neighbors received a bottle if bubbles in the rokm for the occasion. Despite putting the information on our booking and it didn’t get recognized (maybe tui didn’t communicate that). As I mentioned earlier, all the activity was focused around 82&83 and the so called “adults only” section (which was no longer adults only) and los corales restaurant - which was converted to buffet restaurant also for dinners, and around infinity pool. We made some ala carte restaurant bookings on arrival to the hotel and were looking forward to that as they are always delicious. We enjoyed a few (including my birthday dinner at Arlequin, where they treated us to a mini cake with a candle and lovely table decorations - after my partner made sure the restaurant was aware of that). We also booked some others, however one day the booking disappeared from our app. After talking to the hospitality desk we learned they also decided to close most of the ala carte restaurants (it is understandable and reasonable enough, however I wasn’t pleased with the lack of communication). In my opinion the best ones to book are Arlequin (akumal), Alux (sian ka’am), Maiko (sian ka’an), Mikado - teppanyiaki (coba) and Los Corales (akumal). We’ve been to this resort 3 prior this visit (once to tulum, once to akumal and once to sian ka’an) and every time we come back they keep updating and improving the resort. Building more amenities and refreshing the look and decor and generally just looking after the hotel well. Last time we discovered a new sports bar in coba lobby with games and pool tables, this time we got pleasantly surprised by a coffee shop in akumal lobby, where you can get just a perfect latte! I felt confident coming to this hotel despite what was going on as I knew from my previous experiences they always take all the extra precautions to avoid a spread of any infection or disease. They alway insist on using hand sanitizer when entering the restaurants, the staff are always clean, wearing hair nets and you can see most if the chefs wearing face masks while preparing the food. It was also very assuring to see the guards at the entry gates sanitizing everyone’s hands on entry to the hotel complex. I know that on it’s own doesn’t help much, but they were really doing all they could to keep everyone (staff and guests) safe. I have to highlight how helpful, friendly, welcoming and cheerful all the staff were until the very end, even when knowing there wouldn’t be any more work soon as everyone was leaving with us or the day after. It was very sad having to have the holidays cut short due to a world situation and I really hope we will be back soon.
Great Hotel spoilt by Covid-19
We visited the hotel during the Covid-19 issue. On 16th - 30th March 2020. We think we were the last visitors to the hotel from the UK. We had been told by TUI that all was functioning normally.. Unfortunately this proved to be incorrect, as from the 17th March the complex began to close down. There are 4 centres in the complex - Akumel, Coba, Tulum & Sian Khan. From the 17th the Tulum centre began closing by closing restaurants & bars and moving people to other areas. A few days later the Coba complex closed followed by the Sian Khan, with the same process repeated. So now all the complex residents were housed in the Akumel. Not only that but in the adults only section of the centre.This now included young people and children. The communication and process of moving was very poorly handled by the hotel management. It felt as though those of us who were left, were now in the way of a complete closure of the hotel. Everything from food to entertainment was reduced and it definitely was not 5 star or luxury as the hotel is advertised as. I appreciate the difficulties arising from the unprecedented situation we are in but if the hotel was willing to accept guests from the travel companies they should have least honoured the contracts and given the people their holiday until they left to return home. This clearly did not happen and many complaints will be made. This is our second visit to the Akumel and will not be our last as it really is a great venue. I would still recommend it to friends and family. The new adults only section is a good idea and previously the food and entertainment has been good. The new rooms are good with great bathrooms. The older rooms could do with a little refresh and increased drink and tea/coffee facilities would help in each room. I hope the experience helps the hotel to improve the way it communicates to residents and looks to make sure all customer variants (young, old, children) needs are catered for
Wonderful wedding & amazing holiday.
My husband & I along with 32 family & friends stayed at the Bahia Principe Akumal for our sons wedding 8th to 22nd March. We stayed in the adults only section of the hotel and were generally pleased with the room 83336 as it was very large and spotlessly clean. The only draw back were the four flights of stairs up to it and the shower over the bath that leaked badly. We were very impressed with the quality of food in the A La Carte restaurants and the buffets and enjoyed the variety of entertainment that the hotel put on. The wedding went like a dream largely due to the excellent services of the wedding planners Dante & Lillia who were choreographed the thing from start to finish. The locations were beautiful decorated, the flowers absolutely breathtaking and the food at the wedding feast & the cocktail hour was delicious. One guest commented that the evening beach party looked like the set from ‘ Love Island ‘. Thank you so much Dante & Lillia for making our son and new daughter-in-laws dream wedding come true. We will certainly be returning to the Bahia Principe Akumal in the future when the corona virus madness is over.
