Big disappointment

The beach was beautiful, the pool was nice but the swim up bar was attached to the children's pool area! Liquor was well brands only. Bartender blasted music so loud your ears hurt. We asked him to lower the music and he did, for about 15 minutes. The food was awful!! All restaurants were outside except for one. All the food was mostly room temperature, it didn't matter if it was supposed to be cold or hot! Flys were all over while you were trying to eat! The only thing we thought was tasty was jerk chicken. Resort was old and could use a renovation. Would not return.

Great vacation

We were fortunate enough to be able to get out of the US as Hurricane Irma was hitting. The hurricane kissed Jamaica, but we couldn't really tell! Due to the timing of the storm, there were very few vacationers at the resort, which was absolutely fantastic. No competition for beach chairs! The beach was fantastic. They have a wide stretch of sandy beach, with perfectly clear water. We went diving with the shop at Franklyn D Resort, next door, and their beach is very small. Our fellow divers were staying one resort down at the Bahia, and they said their beach was also disappointing and they had to walk about a half-mile to a proper beach. So naturally, we were VERY pleased to have such a great beach! Very little seaweed (we traveled in September) and people were continually maintaining the beach. The drink service at the beach chairs could have been more frequent, but that may have been a factor of how few people were at the resort. The room was fine, if a bit small. The air conditioner in the room was one of my favorite things, freezing cold and blew right at my bed (I prefer to be cold than hot). There were a few purely cosmetic improvements that could have been made - a couple tiles had dings, and grout repairs were poorly done - but I think that's a Jamaican thing. (If you go off the resort, you'll see workers tending the grass on the side of the roads with weed whackers, not mowers! They work with what they have.) The bathroom was a little claustrophobic, the hot water took forever to warm up and was quite spotty. I also would have appreciated a better selection of pillows on the beds - each queen bed had two overstuffed king-sized pillows, but I prefer a flatter pillow so I slept on a folded-up towel. Four standard-sized pillows of varying composition and volume would have been nicer. The food was quite good. At each buffet meal, my husband and I found something that was very flavorful and enjoyable. The trout with mango sauce, for instance, was great, as was the brown stew chicken. (I've since looked up the recipe for brown stew chicken and am making it tonight!) I was disappointed that there was no jerk chicken at the buffet. They make an effort to include a section of traditionally Jamaican foods, but there was no jerk chicken? I had also heard about salt cod as a breakfast food, which seemed odd, but I wanted to try it - sadly, it didn't appear either. The specialty restaurants were pretty good too. Platinum uses a lot of creative serving methods. I felt bad for the live fish in the fish bowl under which my fish dinner was served - that's a little macabre, guys - but not as bad as I felt for the server forced to don a cowboy hat and serve soup from a gun holster. The Japanese restaurant was ok too, though everything was too fancily sauced and I strongly object to frozen mixed vegetables being added to the rice. Our server at the Japanese restaurant was the worst at the resort, she had gotten mad at our fellow diners' requests and just wasn't in the mood. The Italian restaurant was fairly good, but having the diners go to the pasta and risotto bar was weird. My husband went up to get a risotto, but my salmon didn't arrive for a while. Having the servers coordinate these orders would make sure that diners received their meals at the same time. At all restaurants, I felt that the fish selection was chosen more for price point than to highlight the local fish. I would have been more likely to choose locally-sourced fish. The childcare staff was lovely. Lorna, Munchie, and Zoey were fantastic with our son, and we felt good leaving him in their care. I wish there had been more "outings" for the kids his age, though. He seemed to have a great time with the videos, toys, and vehicles, but we have videos, toys, and vehicles at home. We don't have Jamaica at home! With the exception of the server at the Japanese restaurant, all the servers and bartenders were great. Ann-Marie was wonderful at the buffet in the mornings, and I was surprised how many servers had come to know our son! He left a lot of girlfriends behind in Jamaica. Jason at the beach bar was a wonderful bartender and took great care of me. I enjoyed talking to him! Our room was very clean each day, and the housekeeping staff were as sweet as could be. Really, I would give 6 palms to the service staff instead of 5, if that were an option.

Great vacation

Great for family

They have friendly, hard working staff, beautiful beach, pool and fun water park. It's a great place to bring family and kids. However, you need to careful choose the travel time. The1st day when we got there, we saw many local people were visiting, especial pool and water park. It brought down the quality, buffet food were out, crowded,...etc. didn't feel relax and made me want to leave. However, on the 2nd day everyone were checking out, kids back to school, the situation got much better, we finally felt we were on the vacation, could finally lay back and relax, no need to worry. They have a great child care and kids program. You can leave your child all day so parents can relax for some times. They have something for them to learn and do, and they take them for lunch, snacks and some nights dinner. My 4 years old daughter enjoyed so much, she didn't want to leave. The beach was absolutely beautiful, we enjoyed feeding the fish everyday, they surrounding you very close, no need to go snorkel, it's just right there and you can see everything like a free aquarium. Over all we enjoyed the place and highly recommended to all family.

What's to Love

We love the three gorgeous pools at Jewel Runaway Bay Resort in Jamaica, especially the resort's brand-new, Jewel Lagoon Water Park. This 9,000 sq ft water park features tons of slides, family raft ride & a lazy river!

What We'd Change

This lively resort isn't for those looking for a quiet getaway, and all the activity can be overwhelming. If the pace gets too hectic, book a rejuvenating spa treatment and let the hustle and bustle fade away.

Why You Should Go

The Jewel has been completely remodeled and is now completely family-friendly. Plus, they still have complimentary greens fees and transportation to the world-class golf course next door.
