Amazing resort, terrible food

(Almost) Everything about this resort is wonderful. The grounds are beautiful, the beach is private, the pools (which included an infinity pool, jacuzzis & a swim up bar) are phenomenal. You are never too far from a pool/ beach bar & servers walk around periodically to the lounge chairs to ask if you want a refill. Which bring me to service, everyone from the welcome desk, to the trolley drivers, to the butler (every building has one) and the servers at the restaurants were welcoming and helpful- they went out of their way to make sure we felt comfortable and at home, and to accommodate any requests. We were in the adults only area which was nice, but there seemed to be plenty of child friendly activities around to keep them busy in all the other areas. The resort is huge, basically four resorts in one. Based on which main building you stay in, you have access to one or more of the others. We stayed in the adult corner Akumal, and I would recommend this one- it’s the western most end of the resort but accessible to almost everything you need. For everything else, there’s trolleys which run very frequently, about every ten minutes (although late at night we found ourselves walking because they were much more infrequent and it’s a nice walk. The rooms were nice enough (but not out of this world) they had everything we needed and were restocked with snacks daily. They also had a wonderful jacuzzi in addition to a shower and balcony. Now to the only downside - the food. The food lacked flavor and often looked unappetizing. There are enough options that you can find something, but if you care about food as part of your travel experience, this may not be the place for you.

Large resort, yet no concrete silo

Grand Bahia Resort near Tulum, Mexico, is right at the beach (Caribbean Sea). Warm enough in December to swim. We saw sting rays, little fish, sardines, larger fish (some people claimed they were tuna), and the pelicans diving for fish, sometimes crashing into the sea less than 5 feet from you. The resort is vast - you have little electric trains shuttling people around (for free). There are plenty of restaurants and beach bars, offering free food & drinks all day for those who paid all-inclusive. Some people staying at the sister resort across the main road came over with day passes. The food in the "standard" restaurants: large choice, but nothing too fancy of course. The sushi consists mainly of rice. Breakfast is very Americanized; but there are fresh cut fruit and some Mexican food options. The 'fresh' orange juice is hideous. But plenty of milk options (lactose-free, etc). I don't know why they didn't make the coffee/tee self-serve, too. The waiters are a bit overwhelmed during 'rush hour'. When I dared to help myself to some hot water (because I had almost finished my breakfast and no waiter was to be seen offering to bring coffee or tea) I got scolded in an unfriendly way. Check-in took forever, which is not great when you arrive at 2am. Worst thing is the ATM scam: you can only withdraw USD, with a $9 fee plus a 9% (!) charge, which you then have to exchange again at an unfavorable exchange rate. Asking for MXP-dispensing ATM's I was sent to the "Hacienda" (a little market 500 yards away), only to be told that the MXP-dispensing ATM was "currently not working", and the working one had the same $9 + 9% fee scam and dispensed USD only. I would have tipped much more generously had I been able to withdraw funds without getting robbed. What a shame. Getting a replacement room key was not always straight-forward; sometimes staff claimed they couldn't find me in the system. When you book all-inclusive you get a few nights where you can dine in their 'upscale' restaurants. When we tried to reserve a table when booking the vacation we were told we have to make reservations once we arrive. Of course, once you arrive, you are being told that the restaurants are fully booked, or you get slots at unfavorable times. However, when you finally get a coveted slot, you find out half the tables are empty. Anyway, you won't miss too much - the filet mignon at the Japanese hibachi place was not great, and the Mexican restaurant was just ok. The restaurants can be quite far away from where you are housed, so leave early, because a lot of the little e-trains are full or you have to wait for one going to your destination. And if you are late, the restaurant makes a fuss. Car rental guy on site was rude. Don't use taxis - they rip you off (quote you one high price, then price goes up further during your ride). You can just stand on the main road and flag down a "collectivo" (mini-buses), very affordable. Most valuable guy in the resort is a Scottish bloke by the name of "James" from Cancun Adventures (at the hospitality desk). He knows his stuff and will book fantastic tours with friendly & knowledgeable guides. Cenotes (underground freshwater lakes), swimming with dolphins, Maya ruins - anything you want. You get exactly what you paid for. No hard selling. Offers to charge your credit card in MXP, so you get the advantage of the better FX rate when converted by your credit card company. Playa Maya (20-30min collectivo ride away) is scenic - albeit a 30min walk from the main road. We spoke to tourists who had cancelled a planned vacation at the Bahia Grand in summer 2019 due to massive algae being washed up at the beach (there was none in December 2019). Not the resort's fault. Resort installed some huge sand-filled bags to prevent algae from reaching the beach - not sure how effective that was. Algae apparently piled up 6 feet high at the beach. The stench of decaying algae can spoil your vacation, so maybe inquire about the situation before you go. We flew into CAN (Cancun) airport, which is a 90-minute car ride away. Meet & greet & transportation by AmStar was very professional and is highly recommended. All-in-all a great vacation - don't let my nit-picking discourage you from going. Just don't expect 100% perfection, be a bit flexible, and bring lots of small dollar bills, and everything will be fine.

Fantastic Trip!

We stayed for a week and it was a fantastic trip! The resort was beautiful, the room was clean, food and drinks were endless. The buffet was ok, we have had better buffets in our opinion, but we never went hungry. Some parts of the resort are looking a little “tired” but nothing to worry about if you don’t let it. We were there for relaxation and sunshine and we definitely found both of those! We would definitely come back to Grand Bahia Principe Tulum!
