Great place to stay in an amazing country

This was our first time to Costa Rica, but we have done other locations around the Caribbean on a yearly basis. First of all, Costa Rica will be on my top vacations list now. The country is beautiful, the people are nice, and you feel safe. If flying in from Liberia, it is cheaper to rent a car. The roads to Secrets are nicer than most in the US, and there are no sketchy areas to travel through. It is a very easy and scenic drive. Also, you will want a car to explore the area or drive to CoCo beach. Secrets is not the typical "Cancun" resort if that is what you are looking for. The resort is spread out and has extreme elevation changes. It isn't bad walking down, but getting back up to your room is a good workout. They have shuttles that come minutes after called, so that isn't a big deal if you want to use that. There is wifi throughout the resort, and the resort is secluded on hills overlooking the bay (we both felt safe enough that we forgot to lock the door one night!). The beach is nice, but there are rocks in some areas. The pool(s) are fun, with activities every hour and a swim up bar. There are five restaurants, which are all pretty good. The Italian restaurant was our favorite. The staff were all excited to be there and very helpful...most acted like you were family. My only negative comment is on the "salesmen", which try to sell you their version of a timeshare or convince you to buy a 150$ bottle of wine. We went fishing one day, and the chef cooked our fish that night. It was amazing! They will bring room service 24/7, which is nice for that morning after a late night. The "night life" isn't like a club scene, but rather a bar with a DJ or acoustic guitar player. We met many new friends here, including other guests and the staff. Overall it was one of our favorite vacations.

Not what was advertised

What’s BAD: Room: Completely deceived! We reserved a “Preferred Club Bungalow Suite Ocean View”(Ours was room 200). The picture on the Web site shows a beautiful room with separate sitting area including a small couch, chair and table. The reality was a cramped room with double beds and a small table with only one chair stuck in the corner. The very definition of a suite is “a set of rooms designated for one person's or family's use or for a particular purpose.” I don’t think a bathroom and bedroom count as a suite. By any other Hotel’s definition, that is a standard room. Their idea of “Ocean View” left much to be desired as well. The picture shows you how little of the Ocean is actually visible and that was only when standing up on the balcony. Additionally, it was located right above a busy thoroughfare for the shuttles and workers. Nothing was private about our balcony, as we were greeted by the sounds and sites of deliveries to the main area, emptying of trash and constant traffic. When we asked to be moved to a different room, the receptionist was rude and unhelpful. (And remember we paid extra for the “Preferred Guest” accommodations. I can’t imagine what the general reception area was like. Accessibility: This resort is NOT for the elderly or mobility challenged. ALL of the rooms were at the top of very steep hills. They did offer a shuttle service that used 12-passenger vans to get people most of the way to their room. This caused two issues, 1) you had to climb up and in to the back of these vans which was often more of a hassle than climbing the hill and 2) the vans couldn’t take you to your door. There was still a smaller hill to get to your room. When in the shuttle the first day, I watched an elderly couple struggle to get to their bungalow from where the shuttle dropped them off. Another issue, is the shuttle wait could be as much as 15 minutes. I recommend the resort use an 8-passenger golf cart or Polaris, that doesn’t require guests to climb in and out of a cramped van and have MORE shuttle vehicles available to reduce the wait time. Excursion Sales Pitches: There are several salesmen standing on what appears to be resort property (at the TOP of the stairs that lead to the beach) that hound you every time you go to the beach. You can’t swim in the ocean without someone trying to sell you an excursion. My advice is to use trip advisor and find a private tour option through a well-reviewed company. We used “Costa Rica Best Trips” and were thrilled but there are others that seem good as well. The resort itself should do better to keep the salesmen from hounding its guests Amenities: The Web site lists everything included in your room, here’s what was missing. The “private” balcony was over a very busy road. There was no electronic tablet for ordering room service etc… Every request was made over the phone and often there was a significant language barrier. On one particular day, it took four calls back and forth to explain to the lobby that my mini fridge wasn’t restocked as advertised. There was no full-body mirror, and despite having a dress code for slacks and collared shirts no iron was provided. The closet itself was about four feet high, so any pants or long dresses would have to be ironed to wear. When I called asking for an iron, they sent one up but said no ironing boards were available and to use the Iron as a “steamer” instead. Then why not provide a proper steamer!?!

Secrets Papagayo

Overall I rate this place a 3 1/2 star because they really try hard to deliver great customer service. With that being said" unfortunately next time I book a trip to Costa Rica I will stay at another resort. The staff are very welcoming and go beyond their duty to ensure client satisfaction, but the service in all the areas need improvement. To start, we ordered room service 3 different times on different days for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and it was never deliver within the estimate they said time of arrival. The menu food choices at the Portifino restaurant was fair but nothing to brag about, I had to order a second plate because the portion was small. House keeping also needs improvement. Upon arrival I asked to get an iron because it was missing from the closet, I didn't get it until the third day, and only I did because I stopped a housekeeper. In addition, the body wash soap and towels were never replaced. The lobby and pool areas were great, but the signature drinks were not consistent. Each bartender had his own way of making drinks. Kudos to the transportation team who work very hard all day transporting guest to the different locations throughout the resort.
