Pirates in the Caymans

Pirates in the Caymans

by Hope Heldmar

Ahoy, Matey! It's that time of year for one of the most celebrated island events, Pirates Week in The Cayman Islands. This all-island festival celebrates all things pirate. With parades, street parties, costume contests and even a 5K run, you'll get to experience all the excitement while vacationing on these beautiful islands.

To be fully prepared for the week, here are a few pointers to help you talk, look and act like a pirate! (Really this will be easy, because you can't stick to any kind of rules when you want to be a pirate.)

First, you need to know some basic pirate phrases:

  • Ahoy! - Hello
  • Ahoy, Matey! - Hello, my friend
  • Aye - Yes
  • Blimey! - an exclamation of surprise
  • Booty - Treasure
  • Buccaneer - a pirate
  • Me - don't use "I", start referring to yourself as "me"
  • Savvy - Do you agree?
  • Shiver me timbers! - similar to Holy Smokes!
  • Walk the Plank - well, you know what this means...
  • Ye - use it in place of "you"
  • Fightin' - drop the "g" from the end of a word

To really pull it off that you sound like a pirate, make sure you're loud, slightly unintelligible and just a little bit abrasive when you speak. Throw in a few "Arghs" and you should be good to go.

Because you'll also want to look like a pirate, here are few items you'll need to add to your wardrobe.

  • White ruffle shirt - the more ruffles, the better!
  • Black leather pants or black leggings
  • Red vest to wear over the white shirt
  • Black pointed boots or brown sandals
  • Accessorize with a scarf, an eye patch, a sword - hey, if you have a hook, add that, too!

A pirate's look isn't polished and put together, so feel free to add a few rips and tears to your outfit. And, you'll for sure need a pint of rum in your hand to complete the look of a pirate.

Aye, round up your hearties and set to explorin' the streets of the Cayman's this November. A few days of buccaneer-style fun and you might just decide it's the pirate's life for you.
