It was a great value and the location was great. Beautiful views of the volcano. The property was beautifully landscape and full of wild life. The pool was nice but lodge lacked thermal pools which we were looking forward to use. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Drive from the main road was aam adventure. We would recomend.

Arenal Lodge people make it a pleasant stay

The trip to Costa Rica was eventful!. We ended up there during a union strike which had workers closing bridges and gas stations. 14-18 Sept The stay at the lodge was an island of peace and tranquility set aside from all of that. The rainiest slowest part of the season was sunny everyday and no crowds anywhere! Aldo at the Arenal lodge was very warm and receptive. It was hard to leave the reception area because we found him to be so nice and interesting. The hotel's facilities were just as we expected and we found the entire complex to be well groomed and in a great area. The nature's walk on site was reminiscent of the opening sequence of Indiana and the Temple of Doom. The food preparation and quality wasn't quite what we hoped for, but what they lack in flavor they make up in service. We found the foods in town to be the same level of quality so it's not the lack of management, but instead a true taste of the region. The larger more expensive places will give you a better color of food, but you'll pay a great deal more money for that as well. The junior suite provided us with a beautiful view of the volcano and waking up to it through a large wall of windows overlooking a valley with horses and countryside was spectacular to say the least. The pictures online don't do it justice. A comparison of the grand canyon through picture versus the real deal is a perfect analogy. Two days of Arenal area activities we did included a Sky Trek zip line adventure and if you're a thrill seeker this is a must. Go to Mistico hanging bridges where the monkeys hang in trees and call out to you. The views are spectacular. Do the nature walks to the highest base summit of the volcano and a trip to the La Fortuna Waterfall is a must, but be prepared to walk back up the 500 step stairwell it takes to get back! Stack rocks as high as you can in the stream it feeds and enjoy the cool waters. Spend several hours at Paradise Hot Springs (one of many places you can visit) with eight different pools fed from the depths of the volcano sipping on bar drinks served while sitting in the hot water will make you so relaxed, you'll wonder if you're in heaven. Again -- the hot springs are a must do for couples! Give yourself two full days of travel between San Jose and the Arenal Volcano. One coming one going-- stay overnight in or near SanJose to catch plane the next day and make sure the trip lands noon-ish to be at the lodge by day if you're not used to driving there. A 4 night/ 5 day stay was the perfect amount of time we needed to have a great time, not be rushed and not be bored. Rent a car no question about that. If you go during a strike -- DO NOT stay south west of San Jose as in our travel back from the lodge via the west coast (we had decided to make a run to Jaco before heading back to San Jose to see the beaches) we were turned around at canas as the strikers closed the bridges down. The lodge warned us, but we are adventures! This was after a 2.5 hour drive. Not happy at all about that, but It is what to be expected in those 'types' of countries. If you're on a pinch of penny diet this is the place to go. It's a couple's adventure of a lifetime.

What's to Love

The Arenal Lodge staff is friendly, and the complimentary rainforest nature walking tour is a great way to take advantage of the incredible environment.

What We'd Change

It is a bit of a trek over some bumpy hills to get there, but that's the only way to really get close to nature.

Why You Should Go

The lodge is nice and secluded, but still so close to the attractions in the area. And you just can't beat the amazing view of the rainforest, lake and the awesome Arenal Volcano!

Hotel Description

Arenal Lodge: Share a Rainforest Adventure

When there's been just way too much concrete in your life, get back in touch with nature and enjoy a stay at Arenal Lodge located on 2,000 acres of tropical rainforest in the shadow of the famous Arenal Volcano. The beautiful rainforest houses hundreds of the exotic birds, butterflies, tropical flowers and trees of Costa Rica. Situated on a hill, Arenal Lodge offers some of the best panoramic views available of the towering Arenal Volcano. It's a perfect spot for a private getaway.

The cool mountain climate is perfect for the year-round recreational activities that include horseback riding, a complimentary guided rainforest nature walking tour and access to the lodge's breathtaking butterfly garden. Guests can relax in the outdoor infinite edge swimming pool or in one of the three outdoor Jacuzzis. How many times will you get a chance to swim in a pool while enjoying a view of a volcano? There are rainforest trails you can explore on your own where you can watch a variety of bird species flying overhead. Look out for Stephania, one of the local wild blue and gold Macaws that lets you feed her fresh fruit and sunflower seeds. Just don't forget your comfy shoes! And relaxing indoors is easy with a game of billiards at the Lodge's pool table.

Dining is both easy and delicious at the La Fortuna restaurant located on the property. The local and international cuisine is organic and locally produced when possible and served by a friendly waitstaff. Vegetarian or gluten-free eaters can eat to their hearts' content as the chef is happy to accommodate special dietary requests. The restaurant and its incredible view of the Arenal Volcano and beautiful lake attracts locals, too. While you're there, try out the bar's specialty drinks and take in the atmosphere.

Don't forget to venture out and take advantage of the hot springs heated by the volcanic activity. Or take a tour of La Fortuna, the town about 4 miles from the volcano with places to see and shops to browse through. Looking for more adventure? Ask the staff about organizing a canyoneering or kayaking trip!

This hotel is NOT All-Inclusive, but does include a daily complimentary American breakfast. Additional food and drink must be purchased separately.
