GORGEOUS

The Arenal Lodge was just beautiful. We had a straight on view of the volcano and it was breath taking. Breakfast was good, the couple meals we had on site were also good. The AC in the room did a great job and if you like strong water pressure the shower is your dream place. The people on site were more than helpful and friendly. The 3 of us had massages and they were great too. There's not much I could even to think of that wasnt great. We are not nit pickers. The tour person onsite was super helpful and we LOVED our tours. (volcano hike, tabacon hot springs, waterfall hike, hanging bridges, and ATV's) The combo tour is pricey but well worth it! The only thing people might be wary of is the 2km drive up the mountain from the main road to the actual resort. It's Super steep and Super curvy. 1st gear all the way up.

only worth the purchase if you’re a naturist

Location is about 3 miles up from the entrance and it cost anywhere from $25-$35 for someone to take you a few miles up the road and the hotel doesn’t have much of anything for you to do while here. The bar is small and empty with no music playing to entertain you; there is normally only one person working and they are running the dinning and bar. The view at the lodge is gorgeous and the pool has a great view as well. However the pool is open until 10pm and doesn’t have many lights outside so it’s not even worth going at night. Food in the restaurant is very basic and not much of a Costa Rican tradition; breakfast is the same every morning. The beds are extremely thin and uncomfortable along with the pillows as well. We did do a few tours and excursions and they were a lot of fun a lot of other guests stayed here for a few nights and then moved closer to the beach and stayed the remainder which I highly recommend because the hotel has absolutely nothing to do in it so you have to stay busy with the tours. Overall I wouldn’t come back to this hotel nor would I recommend anyone to stay here for many reasons.

Beautiful

My spouse and I’s stay was amazing. We stayed five days in a junior suite and enjoyed massages, horseback riding (despite no riding experience whatsoever), stand-up paddle boarding (again, with no experience), swimming, hiking on lava remains and in the rainforest, and great food. Nearly everyone spoke English and were very helpful with accommodations or recommendations on where to eat at their in-house restaurant or at the nearby town, La Fortuna. Even the locals in town were very kind. The lodge was 5-10 minutes from the nearest road on a relatively steep drive. I highly recommend getting a rental car rather than the shuttle (and a US license works in Costa Rica, so it’s not a big hassle) since you won’t really be able to go into town so easily without it and it limits your food options. There is a tour guide at a desk in the lodge ready to assist with booking any tours in the area (such as the ones I described above). The view is one of the best in the area. We went on a tour with other people in the area and were all very impressed when we said our balcony view had the volcano front-and-center. Amazing experience and I will recommend it to everyone!

Best vacation ever!

Celebrating our honeymoon, we booked this trip to Costa Rica. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and we had the time of our lives. Arenal Lodge was beautiful. We rented a car and it was well worth the money to do so. We spent evenings in La Fortuna and were adventurous during the day. I would definitely do this trip all over again!

What's to Love

The Arenal Lodge staff is friendly, and the complimentary rainforest nature walking tour is a great way to take advantage of the incredible environment.

What We'd Change

It is a bit of a trek over some bumpy hills to get there, but that's the only way to really get close to nature.

Why You Should Go

The lodge is nice and secluded, but still so close to the attractions in the area. And you just can't beat the amazing view of the rainforest, lake and the awesome Arenal Volcano!

Hotel Description

Arenal Lodge: Share a Rainforest Adventure

When there's been just way too much concrete in your life, get back in touch with nature and enjoy a stay at Arenal Lodge located on 2,000 acres of tropical rainforest in the shadow of the famous Arenal Volcano. The beautiful rainforest houses hundreds of the exotic birds, butterflies, tropical flowers and trees of Costa Rica. Situated on a hill, Arenal Lodge offers some of the best panoramic views available of the towering Arenal Volcano. It's a perfect spot for a private getaway.

The cool mountain climate is perfect for the year-round recreational activities that include horseback riding, a complimentary guided rainforest nature walking tour and access to the lodge's breathtaking butterfly garden. Guests can relax in the outdoor infinite edge swimming pool or in one of the three outdoor Jacuzzis. How many times will you get a chance to swim in a pool while enjoying a view of a volcano? There are rainforest trails you can explore on your own where you can watch a variety of bird species flying overhead. Look out for Stephania, one of the local wild blue and gold Macaws that lets you feed her fresh fruit and sunflower seeds. Just don't forget your comfy shoes! And relaxing indoors is easy with a game of billiards at the Lodge's pool table.

Dining is both easy and delicious at the La Fortuna restaurant located on the property. The local and international cuisine is organic and locally produced when possible and served by a friendly waitstaff. Vegetarian or gluten-free eaters can eat to their hearts' content as the chef is happy to accommodate special dietary requests. The restaurant and its incredible view of the Arenal Volcano and beautiful lake attracts locals, too. While you're there, try out the bar's specialty drinks and take in the atmosphere.

Don't forget to venture out and take advantage of the hot springs heated by the volcanic activity. Or take a tour of La Fortuna, the town about 4 miles from the volcano with places to see and shops to browse through. Looking for more adventure? Ask the staff about organizing a canyoneering or kayaking trip!

This hotel is NOT All-Inclusive, but does include a daily complimentary American breakfast. Additional food and drink must be purchased separately.
