Five Star all the way
This was our first trip to a Secrets hotel and we absolutely loved it! Service was amazing, food was delicious - highly recommend Bordeaux restaurant! We met Patricia in the lobby bar and she was just an amazing waitress/mixologist. For fun we came with a list of drinks to try and she helped us complete our list with lots of information and advice. The beach is quite nice with white powder sand and maintained very well. This trip was a true five star experience.

Yearly Friendsgiving
Went with a group of 7 additional friends and had a blast. The main pool on the adult side was great and Melvin (Chocolate) and Alex were the best! Wilson, Angel and Julio Pio Pio were also so much fun. The entertainment team around the pool were amazing as well - Junior, JLo, and Mr. Fire were fun to talk with and interact with all day. We weren't impressed by the food but it wasn't a huge deal. We didn't get a chance to go to Hibachi but heard it was great. Wish the 'sports bar' would have been larger since we hung out in there at night but the bartenders stayed open late for us to watch the B10 championship which was great! (Thank you!) The shows each night were fun to watch - Mr. Fire interacted with the crowd so much and he was great during bingo. We didn't enjoy Mr. Wao - he didn't interact much with the crowd and it felt like he was making fun of us for not understanding Spanish. Gave us a bad vibe, so we moved into the casino instead. Last, but not least, the water slides were a BLAST! They're on the family side but easy to get too and we spent an hour over there every day. We ordered drinks and even got the water slide attendant to go down a few with us.

Best Location For Tennis
Hotel The hotel is beautiful, set in stunning gardens and on a beautiful beach. Check In After a long flight, check in was a real faff. We were ushered into the preferred lounge where they took our passports, offered us drinks and told us to wait for our Butler. A stand-in butler arrived after about 20 minutes and we were taken in a group on a tour of the hotel en route to the room. We then had to wait for an hour for our luggage to be delivered. We wished we had just wheeled it ourselves as we wanted to unpack and relax. The same happened to several others we spoke to. Room #3354 was beautiful and kept spotlessly clean throughout our stay. Minibar and Nespresso machine were kept fully stocked. The rum gift was a nice touch. Food The food is amazing, no complaints whatsoever. The staff in all the restaurants work incredibly hard and do whatever they can to please. The chap in the buffet grilling the meat is an expert. I’m not normally a massive fan of fast food but the Barefoot Grill on the beach does the best burgers, fries, nachos and salad. ‘El Señor Sexy’ es muy gracioso! Drinks Very nice drinks throughout. The beer on tap is poor but there were always cans or bottles available. ALEXANDER in Rendevous and ISAAC in the Dreams preferred bar made outstanding cocktails and treated us like friends. Coco Cafe Coffee Shop Probably our favourite place to visit at least twice a day. A massive shout out to DENISSE, NERY & MIGUELA. These wonderful ladies are so full of energy and made us smile every morning. Feliz Navidad. Beach The beach is beautiful. Huge efforts are made every morning to remove the seaweed. Sadly it is accepted practice to go down early and reserve sunbeds. There are signs to deter this but it is not enforced. There are a few fun activities on the beach including volleyball twice a day. Volleyball was mainly instigated by the guests and with the exception of the wonderful FLOWER, entertainment staff were a hindrance to matchplay. They generally arrived late if at all but were always there to take the net down when there was a wedding 75 yards away on the beach. Pools The pools are beautiful. It was nice to get in early and get some lengths in before they get busy. Entertainment The evening shows were good. We really enjoyed the Queen tribute. Gym Small but adequate gym. I think a new one is in the process of being built. Tennis The absolute highlight of my holiday was my daily visit to the tennis courts. There are 2 tennis courts and 3 pickleball courts. I was sceptical when I saw the tennis courts were sand but I can honestly say it is one of the best surfaces I have played on. I have played on clay, grass, synthetic and hard courts and these are right up there. They are carefully raked and swept after every use. There are two professional and experienced coaches, MARCOS & FRANCES. What these legends don't know about tennis isn’t worth knowing. They are extremely good coaches who genuinely want to improve your ability. They offer lessons at a reasonable price. I had 9 lessons and it is the best money I have every spent. I’m an intermediate club level player and my backhand has been completely transformed. Dios les bendiga. Preferred We upgraded to preferred and in my honest opinion I don’t think it was worth doing. A massive proportion of the hotel is preferred so it doesn’t seem special. My partner regularly stays at Secrets Cap Cana and was so disappointed. We didn’t see our butler until 10 days into our holiday. The preferred swimming pool was like a mosh pit full of drunks hollering and cheering all day every day. The preferred area of the beach was dominated at the front by large cabanas at an additional cost. Sunbeds at this area of the beach and pool were always reserved from early on. Alcohol in the preferred bars is supposedly better but in all honesty the best drinks we had were made by ALEXANDER in the Rendevous. Summary We stayed for 14 nights, the majority of guests are Americans there for 3-5 days. If you are looking for a chilled out couple’s type holiday, this is the wrong place in my opinion. I’ve never been to a hotel where there are so many large groups and, as most are there for a short time, they get on the alcohol big time. Great if you like that. We never had a peaceful meal other than in the buffet and every speciality restaurant meal was dominated by other people’s behaviour and shouty conversations. On one occasion in the Italian restaurant we likened it to being in a sports bar watching a football match. The worst thing for us, and would definitely stop us returning, was the smoking. Everywhere we went people were smoking. When we sat on the beach we were engulfed in cigarette, cigar and marijuana smoke occasionally. So many cigarette butts in the sand, really sad to see that at such a beautiful place. On one day we moved 3 times in an attempt to avoid it. The preferred areas were the worst. When walking through the hotel hallways and entertainment area we had to walk through smoke. We even saw people smoking in the pools FFS! Smoking in hotels in Mexico and Costa Rica is restricted to designated areas so we have never experienced it this bad. A great destination if you smoke and are looking to party I guess. I would love, more than anything, to return and play tennis with MARCOS & FRANCES but I think the hotel would need to ban smoking and provide more relaxing areas and chilled dining experiences before we would consider it sadly.
