Very bad experience and inadequate accountability on both the Hyatt and Secrets Resort

My wife and I went to Secret's Huatulco Resort for our honeymoon for two weeks. I had spent two holidays at the Dreams Resorts in Mexico and enjoyed my stay. I wanted to make this vacation special especially considering it was our honeymoon. My wife and I decided to go to an adults only resort this time hoping the experience would be more quiet. Unfortunately this was not the case. We arrived on Saturday the 15th and in spite of the dated rooms and awful elevators, we were enjoying our stay. On Thursday, we noticed equipment being moved to one of the pools. At this point after questioning staff, we were informed there was a wedding on the Saturday. On Friday, one of the pools was closed as scaffolding was being installed. As a result, hotel guests had to move to another pool. Chairs and umbrellas were moved on to a grassy area behind the last pool. By Saturday. most of the swimming pool space was closed to the guests, including seating area on one side of the last remaining pool. Some guests were then moved to a dirt area behind the grassy area from the day before. To put it mildly (after hearing from a lot of guests), people were angry. We paid a significant fee to stay at this resort. Staff were confused as to which restaurants were remaining open. We experienced this issue a number of times, when we asked staff; this was not their fault; I also heard this from other guests. The wedding ceremony started at the beach and then moved up to the pools. The party (with music) lasted until 2;00; we could hear the music but it was manageable. At 2;30, the party continued down at the beach. The music (and bass) was so loud that our floor vibrated. We were in building 4 on the 6th floor. People guests) outside our room were screaming for them to shut the music down. There was also a laser light show that pointed towards our building. At 5:00 I went downstairs and lay beside a pool that had a chair. I had not slept and was pretty upset. At 6:00, the music finally stopped. This experience also wrecked my day on Sunday because I had not slept. I went to the front desk to complain but was not given any help except to call a manager; this was kind of late. Also, this resort should have been aware the detrimental affect it would have on all of the other non wedding guests. Two weeks after coming home, I am still angry. I contacted Hyatt who in turn referred me to the resort. I was told they didn't control what happens at Secrets. This is definitely a poor reflection on the Hyatt brand. I received a response from a resort chief concierge who told me I should have contacted the resort before I left. Really?! I was then offered half of a ! night stay in Hyatt points. Wow! he finished the response by saying, "I will stay very attentive to your kind comments". There were no kind comments. The Hyatt has a responsibility to its guests if it is associated with the Hyatt. I felt comfortable booking my honeymoon there in part because the Hyatt's name is associated with the resort. If it takes no responsibility to bad service, I will think twice about booking anything associated with the Hyatt. I encourage anyone who reads this, they should do the same.

Tired Resort but Outstanding Staff and Service

Just returned. We had the most wonderful time at Secrets Huatulco. The Resort is very dated, but the kindness of the staff made up for the imperfections. We enjoyed all of the restaurants and the food with the top-rated Bordeaux. Our waitress, Amayvani, along with Chef Livy and Hostess Shaddai were top notch. The food was amazing. 2nd was Oceana, 3rd Cin Cin, 4th Spice, 5th Tamarindo. Castaways was lowest of our picks for dinner, but they had pretty decent breakfasts. Market Cafe was also good for breakfast with the option to have eggs made your way. The omelets were delicious. The Barefoot grill for lunch was good. Was never able to get a pizza due to long lines. By the time we got up there, they were out of ingredients. Roy and Julianna at the Skybar were by far the best bartender and server. We never had to wait for a drink. Our room was cleaned every day and turn down service was every night. I wish I knew the names of the housekeeping staff as well as some of the other servers. They were ALL wonderful. I can't stress enough - tip, tip and tip some more. They are all so deserving. We did ask a few of our servers about Pesos vs. US currency and they appreciated either. We visited the gym a few times. You got a workout just walking to and up to it! Be careful where you walk at this resort. There are many uneven sidewalks that are marked in red, but when your hands are full, you're not necessarily looking down. I took a bad fall, injuring my knee, shoulder, hands, and pride! We will definitely come back, but likely not before it gets a major facelift, especially the pools. Take some time to explore Huatulco, Santa Cruz and Santa Marie. Visit downtown and learn about Mexcal, the Catholic Church, and go to the textile museum. That will blow your mind how they make their rugs, table runners, placemats, etc.

    Good Customer Service

The customer service is good and they are generous with the drinks. The food was not good and the resort needs updating and renovating. Its getting old and not well maintained. We had a good time overall.

    Underwhelming and disappointing

Spent 10 days at this resort in November and as with many of the reviews we agree that the staff here are very friendly and work hard. The views are lovely, it made a change to have more of a rugged outlook as we usually visit the Caribbean side. Unfortunately the ocean was pretty rough while we were there (and were told it's like that all the time) and if you are a bit unsteady on your feet you might have trouble with it, unless you want to walk further around the bay where it's a lot calmer. Also, the sand is very coarse, something we haven't seen before and VERY hot to walk on so footwear is recommended. The food here is quite underwhelming and something that we definitely didn't like and have never seen before is having plexiglass partitions up in the buffet so that you had to point out the food you wanted when it came to the main dishes. Also the buffet wasn't open in the evening which was strange too, had to go to a la carte restaurants instead. One thing we liked at breakfast was that Tamarind (Mexican restaurant) was open which was a lot quieter plus we had awesome service from Carmen in there. Not sure if it's always open or whether it was because it was busy while we were there. We also had very good service from Carlos in the buffet at lunch as well as Carmen again. Talking of service, Mardeli serving on the beach was amazing, always happy and smiling and gave great service. Her brother Julio was good too. Roberto, one of the bell boys, was also very friendly and accommodating. Our room was fine and the bed was comfortable. The fridge didn't keep drinks cold and the beer that was in the fridge was in the smallest bottle we'd ever seen. Maintenance was very good though, one day the shower handle came off in my hand and they arrived quickly to fix it. Now, one thing that we really didn't like was that for the last 3 days of our vacation the quiet pool area was totally closed off for a wedding that was happening on the Saturday. And with all 300 wedding guests there for several days it was very hard to get a spot at the other pool or the beach. The day of the wedding even part of the party pool was closed off. We had absolutely no warning or apology that this was going to happen and many of the guests were quite unhappy about it. When you spend a lot of money to go to a resort you expect a little more consideration. The lobby bar was a joke. It's tiny and half the time there was nobody there to serve you. Entertainment wasn't up to much, we saw a couple of shows while we were there which were actually pretty good but not much else went on in the theatre. There was usually some sort of music at night in the Sky Bar. The Sugar Reef bar was only open as overflow for when you were waiting to eat at Castaways or the seafood restaurant. I guess we've been spoiled at the other resorts we've been to and I doubt very much that we'd return here.

Fun filled vacation met all expectations

Our stay at a Secrets Huatulco was a very pleasant and relaxing experience. The rooms were spacious, clean and serviced twice a day. The entertainment staff (Daniel, Alejandra, Alfonso), the bar staff (Wilford - pool & Daniel - Sugar Reef), and restaurant staff (Andrea and Jesus), stood out making our stay enjoyable. Andrea’s smile and warm greeting, addressing us by name at breakfast, made us feel like we were visiting family. The variety of food choices was plentiful and bar beverages were proportionally appropriate. Nightly restaurants provided great flavours with good entertainment at the Sky Bar. Pool activities (kayak and paddle board races, lumberjack balancing acts on kayaks, volleyball, floating bingo and blackjack) provided fun pool entertainment. The poolside pickleball court (singular) was fun to pass the time, but not for the serious pickler. Beach volleyball, ocean kayaking & paddle boarding, and tennis made for an active and fun vacation.
