Don’t bother with the Preferred club
We just returned from a ten day trip to Secrets Huatulco. The positives were friendly accommodating staff, cleanliness and decent food. The hotel is looking a bit in need of some updating but was very clean. We were warned about the currents in the ocean so only walked the edge. There’s really big pools however there are some incredibly aggressive water bugs and we all suffered painful bites. I definitely wouldn’t pay for the upgrade to preferred club. There was so little to differentiate from the regular rate. A small bottle of booze in our room that I had to request and snacks that were hit and miss. Once there was a chocolate bar and the other days a small pringles or nuts but not every day. We were never once asked for our room number in the so called preferred lounge, anyone could go there. Our room was okay but nothing special. The ice plant screamed constantly, sounded like sky train beside our room. I would return but not pay for the upgrade. The chair game starts at 5:30 am and they monitor it threatening to remove your things and turn them into the lost and found if it’s more than an hour.

Great beach vacation!
We had a wonderful time during our week stay at Secrets Huatulco. The views of the rocky coast and beach are spectacular. Food, drinks and entertainment were all very good. We plan to return in the near future.

First stay at Secrets Huatulco as a younger couple!
It was my first time at Secrets and to Huatulco area. I came with my partner (early 30s) and his parents (60s). The shuttle bus from the airport to the resort was nice and quick (20-25 minutes) even with the other resort drop offs. Our guide on the bus gave some interesting insight into the area and did a great job alongside “Speedy Gonzalez” in delivering us safely to the resort. We had the preferred package deal - and having access to Castaways for breakfast rather than the buffet was a game changer!! What made the trip for myself and my partner was the STAFF!! Daniel and Alejandro were the first people that we met - and soon spent most mornings with playing tennis! 🎾 Alejandro was a great teacher and we had a good group to play games and go through drills with! We brought our rackets with us and our court shoes! Make sure to wear the bug spray provided in the rooms - to avoid the sand mite bites! Daniel wore many hats during our stay (on the court, as the MC, leading other activities, or participating) and really made our stay memorable - he really helped with us staying informed about all the activities too. Without him we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to press the button to turn on the Christmas lights and take part in some of the really fun activities. He works so hard and it shows! Ivonne and Ruben were absolutely wonderful at Castaways and always made us feel comfortable and well taken care of at breakfast after tennis. We always had a great view and Ruben remembered our orders before we even had to ask (and we had tricky orders)! Ivonne always remembered us too and seated us in the best spots! We got to play pickleball with Antonio and he’s a worthy opponent! We also got to learn about making guacamole and Christmas salad with Himena, Amir, Alejandra, Antonio, Alejandro and the rest of the team! It was really special getting to know each and every one of them. We were there for the activities and the sports and they delivered. My partner and I don’t drink much so the more lax atmosphere was perfect for us. There was noticeably an older crowd of folks that stay at the resort - so if you’re looking for younger crowd with more obvious noise, drinking, partying, and activities during the day time this may not be the place. Here we got a great experience with activities because we actively sought it out - they weren’t super pushy about participating which i personally preferred. The food was a little disappointing with the exception of Castaways and the Mexican buffet they held in the theatre. Unsure if it was just during my stay - but I was just not walking away from my a la cartes being transported away into each different cuisine and coming out satisfied or wow’d. The beach is beautiful - lots of clean beach front to walk along. Kayaks, paddle boards, snorkeling gear, sailing boats, it was all available! The pool was really big and super nice to lie out by and really well maintained. Tons of seating on the beach too. The rooms were a bit dated but really well kept up thanks to the housekeepers/maids! They kept our fridge full and left snacks! I always had towels and refills of bug spray! The layout of the building was really cool how it was integrated into the size of the hill/rocky landscape! The elevators were a bit of a wait as 1/3 were out of commission but it gave us the opportunity to take the stairs! They also have a bird garden which is literally the most precious! The landscapers/gardeners/groundskeepers have done an outstanding job. Going to the town was around 120 pesos! Well worth going for fresh fruit or authentic food! Overall great experience for younger folks wanting an active but more relaxed time. Seems to be a great place for folks 50+ who want a more relaxed time as well :)

Great service, good food and beautiful area, but the hotel needs some updating
We were three 65+ couples who stayed at Secrets for 10 days. The location is beautiful and I believe all rooms have a decent ocean view. It is a little hard to find your way around and there are lots of stairs / steps, so if you have mobility issues make sure you let them know so they can accommodate you. They don't provide a paper resort map which we would have liked but it didn't take us too long to figure out our way around. Note that internet cell service is very poor here, so you will likely need to rely on the wi-fi service which was very good. Rooms: The rooms were very nice but need some updating; there were obvious signs of wear and tear but nothing that complicated our stay. The cleaning service and turndown service were done very nicely, although we were missed a couple of times for both; not sure why. The water in the bar was replenished daily, but the few beers provided weren't replaced very often. The shower is a bit odd in that there is a glass door (with some frosting) that almost faces the entry door, so if anyone was coming in they could see who was in the shower. The shower floor is made of wood slat tiles and some of them were quite loose; the same tiles were used on the outside deck and these definitely need to be replaced as the deck chair legs would get caught between them. There was a safe which is great, and very nice robes for us to use. The room was pretty quiet and the A/C worked very well. There was also lots of storage space for clothes and suitcases. The hot tubs on the outside decks of some of the rooms seemed kind of useless to us since the temps were in the low 30's and there was little shade from the sun. The hot tubs also took up deck space so there was less space to move the chairs around. Pool and Beach: It was hard to get chairs by the pool in the shade; this resort could really add some larger sunshades and perhaps additional chairs. We went down at about 7:30 every morning to get chairs for 6, which of course was more difficult, and found that the only places we could get were facing the pool wall and too close to the pool speaker. They played very loud music at the east end for aerobics class and sometimes left it going all day, so that was unpleasant. Some tiles in the pool have come off, and there are trip hazards with uneven deck tiles in a few places. We often ended up at the beach. The pools were very nice and never seemed very crowded. We could go to different areas throughout the day and we never got bored with it. The pool bar service was very good. The beach was our favourite place to sit though, to get away from the loud music, and hear the ocean and get breezes off the ocean. We loved the views from here. The only drawback was that you have to go down a bit of a sand hill to get to the water which isn't all that easy to walk back up. The water was nice and there is a roped off area, as well as a calmer area a bit east of the hotel where you can swim or snorkel. Restaurants: We were a bit disappointed to find out there was no regular buffet open for supper; there were several restaurants to choose from but most of them have some sort of dress restriction, especially for men, that you should know about before you go. The buffet for breakfast and lunch was good, we enjoyed the selection most days. There were also dinner buffets set up in a different area some nights so if you check the electronic board each day you might find one coming up. The food and service in the restaurants was overall very good. Special shoutout to Castaways Steak house staff Mirely (the best!), Kevin, Sebas and Celeste and their bosses Daniel and Ismael. When we were there one night we mentioned that it was my husbands birthday the next week, so they arranged a special dinner for us out in the courtyard under a big lighted tree. It was beautiful. We were the only ones out there and they were working pretty hard to serve us. Excellent service and even the racoons and coatis came to join in! The French restaurant Bordeaux provided excellent service and the food was delicious. Kudos to Amayrani, Chef Livy, and Hostess Shadai. We also really enjoyed the Japanese restaurant Spice and the Teppanyaki table where the chef cooks right in front of you. This requires reservations so plan ahead. Service was great here as well. Entertainment: Some nights the shows were excellent. Live music was played in the Sky Bar several nights but there really is no place for many people to sit so that was disappointing. It was also too loud for us sometimes if we did get a seat in the area. The International Show in the theater was very enjoyable. However, overall it seemed a bit hit and miss for us.
