Great service, good food and beautiful area, but the hotel needs some updating

We were three 65+ couples who stayed at Secrets for 10 days. The location is beautiful and I believe all rooms have a decent ocean view. It is a little hard to find your way around and there are lots of stairs / steps, so if you have mobility issues make sure you let them know so they can accommodate you. They don't provide a paper resort map which we would have liked but it didn't take us too long to figure out our way around. Note that internet cell service is very poor here, so you will likely need to rely on the wi-fi service which was very good. Rooms: The rooms were very nice but need some updating; there were obvious signs of wear and tear but nothing that complicated our stay. The cleaning service and turndown service were done very nicely, although we were missed a couple of times for both; not sure why. The water in the bar was replenished daily, but the few beers provided weren't replaced very often. The shower is a bit odd in that there is a glass door (with some frosting) that almost faces the entry door, so if anyone was coming in they could see who was in the shower. The shower floor is made of wood slat tiles and some of them were quite loose; the same tiles were used on the outside deck and these definitely need to be replaced as the deck chair legs would get caught between them. There was a safe which is great, and very nice robes for us to use. The room was pretty quiet and the A/C worked very well. There was also lots of storage space for clothes and suitcases. The hot tubs on the outside decks of some of the rooms seemed kind of useless to us since the temps were in the low 30's and there was little shade from the sun. The hot tubs also took up deck space so there was less space to move the chairs around. Pool and Beach: It was hard to get chairs by the pool in the shade; this resort could really add some larger sunshades and perhaps additional chairs. We went down at about 7:30 every morning to get chairs for 6, which of course was more difficult, and found that the only places we could get were facing the pool wall and too close to the pool speaker. They played very loud music at the east end for aerobics class and sometimes left it going all day, so that was unpleasant. Some tiles in the pool have come off, and there are trip hazards with uneven deck tiles in a few places. We often ended up at the beach. The pools were very nice and never seemed very crowded. We could go to different areas throughout the day and we never got bored with it. The pool bar service was very good. The beach was our favourite place to sit though, to get away from the loud music, and hear the ocean and get breezes off the ocean. We loved the views from here. The only drawback was that you have to go down a bit of a sand hill to get to the water which isn't all that easy to walk back up. The water was nice and there is a roped off area, as well as a calmer area a bit east of the hotel where you can swim or snorkel. Restaurants: We were a bit disappointed to find out there was no regular buffet open for supper; there were several restaurants to choose from but most of them have some sort of dress restriction, especially for men, that you should know about before you go. The buffet for breakfast and lunch was good, we enjoyed the selection most days. There were also dinner buffets set up in a different area some nights so if you check the electronic board each day you might find one coming up. The food and service in the restaurants was overall very good. Special shoutout to Castaways Steak house staff Mirely (the best!), Kevin, Sebas and Celeste and their bosses Daniel and Ismael. When we were there one night we mentioned that it was my husbands birthday the next week, so they arranged a special dinner for us out in the courtyard under a big lighted tree. It was beautiful. We were the only ones out there and they were working pretty hard to serve us. Excellent service and even the racoons and coatis came to join in! The French restaurant Bordeaux provided excellent service and the food was delicious. Kudos to Amayrani, Chef Livy, and Hostess Shadai. We also really enjoyed the Japanese restaurant Spice and the Teppanyaki table where the chef cooks right in front of you. This requires reservations so plan ahead. Service was great here as well. Entertainment: Some nights the shows were excellent. Live music was played in the Sky Bar several nights but there really is no place for many people to sit so that was disappointing. It was also too loud for us sometimes if we did get a seat in the area. The International Show in the theater was very enjoyable. However, overall it seemed a bit hit and miss for us.

Not the place of you want a party like atmosphere

Beautiful beach. The pools are warm. Lots of chairs available. Do not book here if you like a fun party atmosphere. Older crowd, my guess is 70yo or more. Not a lot of activities during the day. No DJ playing music.

    Not good

Have been going to this resort now for close to 14 years . I would have to say it has gone downhill like a landslide . Service , food , stocking up fridge to turn down service has been dismal at best . Music pounding in our room most nights from pressure washing the pool deck to functions pounding music to at least 10:30 at night . This will definitely be our last trip to this resort unfortunately.

    Fun in the Sun!

My mother and I had a great 10 days at this resort for my first time here in Huatulco! I wanted a place that had lots of activities to do and place to snorkel. This place checked all the boxes, there was great snorkelling along the cove there where we saw lots of colourful fish, a sting ray and puffer fishes! The food was a bit inconsistent but found that the Spice restaurant was our favourite. It is an older building but the location and view can’t be beat. I Wanted to give a special shoutout to the entertainment staff that made this trip truly unforgettable for my mom and I!!! To Amir, Ximena, Alejandra, Alejandro, and Antonio you guys are such a fun group, thank you for the many laughs playing volleyball and taking us on a kayak and sailing tour :) Thank you so much! Janelle (the MVP ;)) and Shirley We will be back!

Underwhelming, but we made the best of it!

-It was our 25th wedding anniversary so we decided to treat ourselves to an upgrade by going to a Secrets. Unfortunately, it felt more like a downgrade. They never acknowledged our anniversary even though we told them when we checked in and our travel agent added it to our reservation. Lobby is hot - no fans, so no air flow -While the BEACH was undeniably gorgeous, you could not see it from the infinity edge pools or the rooms because the bushes are too high. We loved swimming in the ocean, because we are good swimmers it was easy for us. Beach is steep, sand is hot, deep and coarse. -WIFI - they have the best wifi we have ever experienced on a holiday! It works everywhere and never lags. -Hotel APP - fantastic. What a nice touch. Easy to use and quick. -POOLS -lots of towels. Lovely pools as long as you overlook all the broken tiles (there are lots). Shallow pools with good water temperature that stay open until 8pm. Chair game is live and well here. So many chairs with towels that NEVER have people sit on them all day. We never saw towels being taken away. -Huge WEDDING a big PROBLEM. Their site says that weddings by the pool are not allowed...but I guess that does not count if you are the owner's son. Our first 3 days of our holiday could have ruined our entire holiday because staff spent 3 days setting up day & night for a wedding of close to 300 people on the beach and around the pools. They constructed & stained a bridge, a dance floor, a platform for the wedding table, and a huge D.J. booth. More than 1/2 of the pools were off access to us for those three days. They also closed down three restaurants. (one moved into the Activities shelter/archery field as a makeshift burger spot in the bush. No activities or entertainment for those 3 days. All guests had to squish around and in one pool. The worst part was that the music was loud and went ALL night long until 6am the next morning. I did not sleep all night until the pounding of the bass in my chest was gone. The next day was a write off for everyone because the guests were all grumpy from lack of sleep. No warning, no apology, no compensation for anyone. The wedding had all the staff, all the good food and all the attention while the guests were an afterthought that paid their bills. Our dinner at Cin Cin that night was inedible, we had to walk out along with another couple. Not impressed. Was told that one couple left the hotel in the middle of the night and went somewhere else. -SECRET BEACH -The next day things started to improve. We decided to make the best of it and have fun despite the bad beginning to our trip. We took a walk over to the far left of the beach and took the path through the bush off property to the secret beach. Wow! Beautiful. Spent a long time looking for shells and taking photos. Dipped ourselves in the water a few times to cool off, but did not feel comfortable swimming there. At the end of our holiday another guest told us about watching a 5 foot snake eating a lizard in the piles of driftwood left by the tides. We had gone to this long beach three times. Best time to go is 4:00 and then take photos on your way back of the sun going down. The best sunset photos are from the resort's beach near the snorkelling area. FOOD - Meh. The only standout restaurant was Bordeaux where the service and all the food was wonderful. Spice had the best springrolls, chow mein and chicken on a stick. Food was hot at these two places. Their beef is tough and pork is fatty though. The rest of the venues were hit and miss...more misses though. You get very few vegetables. Soups are lukewarm or cold. Reading the menus is a guessing game...weird. Nothing special with the food, you won't gain weight. The worst one was Cin Cin where we were the first guest of the night and our table was dirty from the night before with hair, bread crumbs and olive oil on the table cloth. Food was awful there. A guest who stayed at Dreams the week before said that the food was better at Dreams. Evening entertainment was exactly the same. ROOMS - big and clean. One set of plug ins did not work. Scale and alarm clock in the room! Very firm mattress. Pillow menu. Lots of storage space. STAFF- wonderful workers, but overworked. You could tell that the wedding stressed them all out & put them in a bad spot. Once the wedding was gone, they were back to normal. ACTIVITY STAFF - Top notch once we met them after the wedding. Daniel, Ximena, Amir and the whole crew were so good at their job. Pool volleyball, pickleball, archery, appetizer demos, Spanish lessons, bingo & blackjack in the pool, water aerobics, & kayak racing in the pool. EVENING ENTERTAINMENT - very basic: bands, 3 dancing shows, and two short Perfect Couple cruise style games. The Mexican show & buffet was the best one. No Fire Show as I had seen on a few videos from last year. No party by the pools for us. No painting class as advertised online. (it was mindful colouring by the pool with crayons.) No Mariachi Band. OVERALL - if it were not for the wedding fiasco I would give it a 3.5/5. Foodies will be disappointed. Photographers will love it here. Swimmers will love the beach. We decided to make the best of it and had fun anyway. May possibly return if and when Secrets completes a much needed refresh.
