I was treated like an outcast
I was treated like an outcast. I am an 80-year-old senior citizen. I love Cancun and come several times a year. When I come alone, I like to stay at the Riu Palace Las Americas, and when I come with my wife, she prefers the Fiesta Americana Coral Gables. I had been trying to convince her to stay at the Riu for some time. I finally managed to get her to come with me to visit the hotel. Upon arriving, I was approached by the doorman who immediately touched my wife's arm, pointing to the Fiesta Americana wristband. I didn't like the impolite and ostentatious approach. I explained that I wanted to show her the lobby, and he told me that I could only do so if I registered at the front desk. I found this offensive, as I had never seen anything like it before in my long life. But I agreed, and when I tried to register, I was informed that I could only wander around the lobby if accompanied by an employee. I felt like I was visiting a prison, being watched, and feeling like an outcast who might eventually try to take some illicit advantage. I was outraged and said I wouldn't accept being "escorted" during my planned visit. I told the front desk attendant that they had just lost a customer, to which she replied, "That's fine!" I hope the hotel management becomes aware of this and at least teaches their employees some common sense to treat a gentleman and his wife, both 80 years old and staying at a neighboring hotel, the Fiesta Coral Gables, with more consideration. I've always liked the Riu very much, and I'm sure this incident wouldn't be tolerated by an international chain like the Riu. I'm tremendously disappointed and frustrated because now, even more so, my wife will never want to go there again after this humiliation.

One of the best in Cancun!
This was our 8th visit to this Riu since 2011. That should tell you we love this place and feel at home here. Our stay was 5 nights. We have stayed here various times of the year and I believe December is a great time as the weather was perfect. ROOM- we were rewarded for our many visits with a corner room. These rooms have a great view and a wrap around balcony. We were on the 6th floor which also gives a wonderful view. The room was spacious and very clean and comfortable. There are signs of aging in the room such as broken tiles and chipped paint but nothing serious. This Riu is probably due for a remodel as it is now 21 years old. The rooms are very clean always. THE FACILITIES- The facilities are always clean and well kept. There are always people cleaning wherever you go outside and inside. They take great pride in this place. The pools are always clean and sparkling. The restaurants are all nicely decorated and clean. There have been complaints in the past about a musty smell in the rooms. This was not apparent to me on this visit. I don’t know if something was done or whether it is just the time of the year. FOOD- The food in the past has always been top notch. The quality this time was again top notch. I did notice however a slight drop in the variety of food offerings. Maybe it was just the time of the year. Our favorites are the Steak House, the Italian restaurant and the Buffet. Just a note about the French Fries, they are as good as any American restaurant. The fish dishes are extremely tasty. You can always find food to your liking here. STAFF- The shining stars are the staff at this Riu. They are A1 all the time. Service with a smile. I really believe these people love their jobs and their customers. Some of them have been here since this Riu opened. We recognized several from past visits. What was more remarkable was some of them recognized us from past visits. I cannot say enough about these wonderful people. All said we will return to this Riu as soon as possible. It feels like our home away from home.

Enjoyed our stay
We enjoyed our stay, the resort was quiet until Friday where there were notably more people and higher energy. The staff was very pleasant and accommodating. All the restaurants were easy to get in to and the food was what was expected. Being this is a palace it is on the older side and really needs an update, it’s just a tad disappointing, we have been to several RIU palace resorts and this by-far was a little surprising. The RIU Caribbe (not a palace) right next to our palace was beautiful, modern and was just over all nicer but a smaller property. We spent some time here instead.

Beautiful luxury hotel, great service, rooms outdated, would definitely return
We visited from the UK for 11 nights and having just got home I wanted to write an honest review. Overall, a whole heap of positives. Service: Service and hospitality culture in Cancun is excellent and beats a lot of the best European areas for this. At this resort, the staff are excellent and generally very friendly. The pool waiters (our favourite was Juan) will remember your drink order and have the next one waiting ready before you even finished your last sip. Let’s just say you never go thirsty at RPLA! The indoor restaurant, both a la cartes and buffet, are absolutely amazing and again offer 5 star service. The one let down is the outdoor dining at the buffet where the servers are less friendly/ attentive and generally seem more rushed about. Quite often missing empty plates or not refilling drinks and generally feeling a lot more rushed around. Rooms: We had a junior suite with a balcony, clean and spacious with mini bar and fridge re stocked daily. Mould in the bathroom/ shower and outdated decor. This didn’t impact our stay much but it is probably time the rooms had a refurb as they're not in keeping with the high standard in the rest of the hotel. Food: Buffet was great and beyond the quality of other all inclusive hotels I’ve been too. The a la cartes were good, particularly the Sakura (I think it’s called). Did not rate the Black & White (steakhouse) there was a queue every night and if you didn’t make the first sitting there was a 1hr 45 minute wait. This would be solved with a booking system though it’s only this one restaurant that seems to have this issue. We dined one night there and the crab cake starter was tiny and the steak was 50% fat and grizzle so I have no idea what the hype is all about. It’s a no from me. The waiting time is an issue for guests but also for staff who deal with abuse and upset guests every night when they have to continually turn people away. It’s a real point of negativity and Riu really need to figure out a way to fix it. Cleanliness: Cannot fault the hotel for this other than mould in shower (room 559). The pool lounge 24/7 bar has a horrid smell, a mix of processed food, chemicals and perfume. Can’t be explained unless you smell it yourself but it’s awful! Everywhere else is absolutely lovely. Facilities: The hotel has 3 main pools each perfect for the day you plan on having, we enjoyed the party pool with all its activities and music. Entertainment team are fantastic. The hotel has its own private beach front, calm waves and the softest sand I’ve ever stepped on. We didn’t visit the gym or the spa, spa prices looked extortionate. Bamboo spa is over the road for half the price. You have access to the majority of other Riu hotels and the caribe hosts the nightly party’s with a free shuttle bus service, we loved the white party. A few small points of interest - we took the ferry to Isla mujeres for the day and had a great time. Don’t book any activities at the ferry dock they’re commission based and cost twice as much. We used Joaquin buggy’s to hire our golf buggy for the day and had zero issues. There are plenty of nearby amenities including pharmacy and supermarket if you need them, both directly opposite hotel. At the hotel, everything is truly all inclusive including premium spirits and cocktails. Overall I’d rate the holiday a 4.5, but can warrant the 5* for purpose of the review as we would definitely return and had a wonderful time here.
