    Relaxing & Charming

We went to Catalonia Royal Tulum in November for 10 days of pure relaxation. The jungle setting was exactly what we were looking for! This hotel has a lot charm and character and the personnel is beyond welcoming. The hotel is dated though and could use an upgrade in many locations. I had previously stayed at Catalonia Royal La Romana so I knew what to expect in terms of how the hotel operates, here's a rundown of things: ROOMS: We were in building 3 (Premium section). The room was big and spacious, but dated. It was clean but the bathroom was very dated. We had a balcony overlooking the pathway but we only used it once. There is no sun as the canopy from the trees covers the whole area so hard to have clothing dry out there. Mini fridge stocked daily with beer, water & soft drinks as well as a few snacks. Safe in the closet along with an iron & board, a few shelves for clothes. Strangely enough no dressers with any drawers for clothes so very limited space to put your clothing anywhere. Bathrobes & slippers were provided but the slippers did look like they had been previously used. Water pressure was good and the shower was nice and big. Double sinks with plenty of counter space, a good hair dryer too. They provide water bottles daily. The room was a bit dark, not all the lighting was working and they only had table lamps, no ceiling light. FOOD: Breakfast & lunch is buffet every day unless you pay for the access to the BLoved which we did not. Suppers are all a la carte except one night a week where they have the Mexican buffet night. Easy to reserve on the app, we did so for a few days in advance with no issues, times available vary on when you book. We found there was a good variety of food, some of it was very good and some of it...was nothing spectacular. No one starved and no one got sick which is the main thing. We just found a lot of inconsistency especially when ordering the same dish again on a different day and having it taste or be different. Drinks were good but again very inconsistent depending which bar you go to. The lobby bar was very good but we only went there at night time. Coffee, you need to order at the bars and not the buffet, it is not good at all at the buffet! POOL: The pool area was nice, a lot of chairs with palapas, a swim up bar big enough it doesn't feel crowded. Didn't spend much time there as we were on the beach every day. BEACH: The beach is awesome! Nice white powdery sand, no rocks, no sea grass in the water and we had no sargassum when we went. The sea was agitated for most the time we were there unfortunately there was a depression in the area at the time we stayed so sadly we didn't get to experience the millpond water nor any spectacular sunrises as there was a lot of cloud cover. It's a nice beach to walk on and very quiet as soon as leave the hotel premises. There were always enough chairs when we went down around 7h45-8h00am. There are no palapas on the beach, only palm trees but if you pick the right spot you can have shade all day if shade is what you are looking for. It feels a bit like sardines as the chairs are all very very close to one another. The hot tub was very nice with an awesome view of the ocean. Beach service was very good, it was nice to have this perk. CONS: We found the staff trying to sell you the timeshare deal to be very persistent and to a point annoying. Every single day, for 10 days we were asked repeatedly even though we kept saying no thank you. The inconsistency in food & drinks was unfortunate for a hotel that advertises itself as a 5 star resort. Smoking on the beach can be an issue as not all guests respect the designated areas. Overall the hotel hits the spot on many levels but there is always room for improvement. We found the staff to be extremely nice and welcoming, they couldn't do enough for you. The setting is truly amazing, lots of walking but that's OK. Lots of coatis on the pathway which was nice to see. Would I rate this property 5 stars? No, but it's a solid 4 stars. You get what you pay for and we researched before going so we knew what to expect. What the hotel may have lacked in updated amenities (mainly the rooms & lobby) they made up in spades with their awesome staff. We had a great relaxing vacation on a fantastic beach with good margaritas, that beats the daily grind any day!

Relaxed, fun and luxe paradise holiday

My husband & I from the UK are here currently for our second time! We have been to many places but nothing quite compares to Catalonia Royal Tulum. The food, rooms and whole experience is second to none. The privileged package is well worth it for the Beloved restaurant experience. It’s the perfect beach front setting with exquisite views, the loveliest staff and delicious meals. Our option also included a massage at the spa and use of the sauna, steam and jacuzzi which was lush. The Catalonia staff are the crown in the Jewell. All of the servers, waiting staff, bar staff and cleaners are so so friendly and cannot do enough for you. Then the entertainment staff - Diego, Paulina, Abraham, Eddy - are just the best! The perfect combination of relaxed and fun! Always encouraging to join the activities but never putting pressure on to join. The aqua gym, dance lessons, trivia and bingo plus the evening shows were my personal favourites. I cried last time we left here and I know we will be back again soon. If you’re on the fence about going then do not hesitate. If you want relaxed yet fun then this is the place for you.

Fantastic resort and a great value! A wonderful vacation!

A truly wonderful resort. The staff are wonderful. Always friendly, they really made us feel welcome. While not a 5 star resort, we were still very happy with the food and drinks. The cocktails could be more consistent from bar to bar, (and were overly sweet at times), but you can say that about most resorts at this level. The overall cleanliness of the resort is outstanding! Not sure I’ve ever been to one this clean. The entertainment team, particularly Diego and his crew, work non-stop to make your stay fun. (I seriously don’t know how they find the energy). Make no mistake, this isn’t a foam-party-music-blaring type atmosphere at all. There are a few light-hearted activities and games around the pool during the morning and early afternoon, but for the most part it’s just a chill, relaxed environment around the pool and beach. The lush surroundings and wildlife also make this really different from other resorts I’ve been to. The Coati (like a small raccoon) are everywhere and very tame. (Please don’t feed them). But their presence, along with other wildlife, makes this place truly unique. Trust me, you’ll be taking a ton of pictures of them! The food was good! Have I had better at other resorts, yes. But the buffet selections for breakfast and lunch were great, and the on-site restaurants were all really good with just a few minor exceptions. There is something here for all tastes. Don’t expect Michelin-level food, but it’s certainly very good and the service at every one of them was outstanding. Again, for the value there’s little to complain about here. The rooms themselves are spotless, and ours was meticulously cleaned every day. Hats off to the hard working staff who do this day in and day out. For the price, this resort is well worth the money. It’s not a 5-star, but for the money you pay, the fantastic service you get, the delicious variety of food, and the beautiful surroundings, you’ll be hard pressed to find another resort like this for the price.
