Bahia Principe Luxury Ambar - Adults only All Inclusive

We stayed at Bahia Principe Luxury Ambar for 8 nights, June, 2025 and unfortunately will not be returning. While the gardens are beautiful and the property is clean, the overall experience did not meet luxury standards. The room was nicely decorated but uncomfortable. The bed was just okay, there were very few power outlets, and the room had a persistent mildew smell. Maintenance issues were common—peeling paint and shower that sometimes offered only hot or only cold water, with no temperature control. The food was a major disappointment: bland, repetitive, and generally low quality. While a few restaurants were good, others were outright unpleasant—Portofino served spoiled vegetables, and El Olivo had hour-long wait and very poor service, especially from the bad-mannered “Captain” Eduardo. Drinks were low quality, and despite multiple requests, we often did not receive what we asked for. Overall, service was inconsistent. Some staff were very friendly and hardworking, while others were focused on aggressive upselling. The lobby was constantly filled with salespeople pushing excursions and timeshare presentations using high-pressure or misleading tactics. The beach was no better vendors approached guests nonstop, often promoting activities that did not match what was actually delivered. Once they realized you weren’t spending more money, the level of service noticeably declined. The beach itself was overcrowded, and unless you woke up by 7 AM, it was nearly impossible to find a lounge chair in the shade. Even more frustrating was the constant smoking on the beach. There appeared to be no enforcement of smoking rules, making it difficult to enjoy the area without being surrounded by cigarette smoke. The resort app was dysfunctional, making restaurant reservations was impossible before arrival. After check-in, only a few restaurant options were still available. This is not a true luxury resort. It may look appealing in photos, but it falls far short in terms of comfort, food, and relaxation. The reliance on mass tourism, and frequent language barriers among staff only added to the frustration. Sadly, this experience did not live up to our expectations in any way.

Nice resort with some nice staff!

This resort had so many good points. The layout is very nice and makes staying here easy. We really thought the transportation staff did one of the best jobs we have ever seen at a resort of this size. The biggest problem we had was the food was just "middle of the road". It was not horrible but was not as good as it should have been for this resort. We actually thought the main buffet was as good as the al a carte restaurants. Also, would be nice if they made it easier to find out all of the shows you could see at the main theatre. Could use a little work on their app. I do want to say a nice word about a couple of people. Mercedes Richardson, our room steward, was as good as we have ever had. Always had a smile on her face and did a great job. Made a very favorable impression on us toward the staff at the resort. It was, also, our pleasure to spend a great hour hearing a really good violinist, Robmary, perform. Such a classy performance. Made our evening very enjoyable.

    Average

Overall customer service was average. The onsite shuttle drivers were great and the customer experience agents were very friendly and helpful. The food was mediocre, the beach is full of seaweed (although the resort had a full time cleanup crew working hard to clean it, they were facing an uphill battle) and the pool bar service was poor. We are early risers so no issues for us grabbing a shaded spot but if you don’t claim a beach or pool lounge chair by 6:30am you will not get an ounce of shade all day.

    The good and bad

Ok so this place is beautiful. Pros-nice rooms, nice pool, mostly nice staff Delocelina was our favorite. Drinks came quickly. They did a great job clearing seaweed. Plenty of access to food and lots of options. The Sports bar food was surprisingly good. Cons- Had to move rooms due to noise from entertainment, Amstar has the WORST excursions/use the ones found on trip advisor. The water had stinky seaweed not see through as pictured. Food was low quality and the restaurants were not good and had snotty staff. Beware they will want you to upgrade and they are always trying to upsell everything. We will not be returning. I feel the magic that may have been is gone due to greed and not relying on return customers

    Amazing resort-can't wait to return!

My husband and I went here for our 10 year wedding anniversary and it was amazing! At check-in we were given a room in the back of the resort but then looked into us and we were in the top corner of building 64. View was great over the pool and ocean, it did get a little loud at night with shows but we didn't mind. The room was very nice, we did have to call because the AC didn't seem to be working right, and the water was only coming out burning hot. We called and they quickly came to take care of the issue. Food everywhere had a good selection, but our favorite was Limbo! We went nightly for cocktails too they were delicious. It was hot so we liked sitting by the beach for the breeze but unfortunately the seaweed got worse as the week progressed so we didn't swim there as much as we liked. The staff was always out with the tractors trying to clear it out, but it was just hard to keep up with. We loved the staff everywhere! They were so friendly and always looking to help/get us what we needed. We liked that there was always something going on, and that we could visit the other resorts. Whether it was a BBQ on the beach or a pizza making class, or the entertainment crew putting on a foam party it was always very enjoyable. We cannot wait to return with our two kids-looking to book at Esmerelda so we can still use some of the amenities from Ambar when our kiddos are being babysat :-)
