Quiet, many perks, some reservations

We last stayed at Royal Hideaway in 2013. Zoetry was recommended as another option for a quiet, luxury vacation with great food and only 20 minutes south of the Cancun airport. We had a terrific time and would recommend Zoetry (and the oceanfront suite can't be beat). Some things we can share to help when you're deciding or when you're there. This may sound like we're griping but clear communication at Zoetry is it's greatest weakness. Providing details here that we would have liked to know ahead. First the clear winners -- the entire staff is genuinely warm and accommodating; the suite is terrific (check out the map I've posted - some blocks of rooms are closer to the ocean than others); pool/beachside service is spectacular; included "Endless Privileges" - laundry service, boat rides/excursions; uncrowded and quiet (no pool music, no communal Zumba in the pool). BEWARE THE TIMESHARE HARD SELL: We never fall for the sales pitch, but soon after our arrival, we were passing by The Library and we were pulled in to give us our welcome package. After gifts of resort coupons, scarves and bug resistant cream, we glazed over as she tried hard to get us to agree to the 90-minute visit to Secrets Maroma. Of course we didn't go but the sneaky pitch dulled our opinion of the place. (We met another couple who fell for the 90-minute visit and were stuck on a 4-hour hard-sell, conference room, many tiers of sign now "car salesman" pitches). We avoided The Library as much as possible thereafter. Airport to resort shuttle: Confirm your flight info with the hotel. The airline changed our flight months before our trip and Zoetry had our arrival time as something other than our original or revised itinerary. We waited for 30 minutes for our transfer to the hotel. Look for Zoetry drivers with yellow pants, white shirts and panama hats. Beach: A long, very narrow strip. The water is full of seaweed and, in a Sisyphean effort, the staff works AM to PM with a tractor to remove the stuff. We spent most of our time at the pool as the tractor is detracting after awhile. Many others have mentioned this in their reviews. If beachside and clear water is a must for you, this is not the place. Just what nature has dealt. Layout: Unlike the long, sprawling AIs we've been to, Z is compact, mostly. From the entrance/driveway/lobby, you are steps from the pool and ocean. Restaurants surround the pool, suites then sprawl north forever. We requested and got a suite closest to the central hub and would ABSOLUTELY recommend this unless you like the long walk home or golf cart rides. We loved the ease of of proximity (and it was absolutely quiet). Food/Dietary Preferences: We are both vegetarian, 1 can't eat cheese. We were told at our first lunch that we only had to tell them once and it would be forever noted at all restaurants. Not so. We put it in writing when we checked in and we were asked by every maitre'd and server at every meal. It gets a little boring being asked at every host stand, "You have allergies?" And still we sent at least 5 dishes back with cheese on them. After our first night, we accepted it and moved on, but good to manage your expectations before you get there. And tell your server, every server, every single time. Restaurants: We had an amazing dinner at Kaak. Lunches and breakfasts at Kaak were good. El Chiringuito "Beachside" Grill was only beachside 1 night during our stay. The food was ok, not great (the pita and grilled tomato appetizer was the highlight), the view was spectacular. On other nights, the "grill" was served in a conference/banquet room, literally (cheap looking green led lighting in bright white room light, movie screen, canned musak). The fine-dining La Canoa was mediocre at best (although the scallop appetizer was tasty). Our recommendation would be to stick to Kaak and the grill, only if beachside. Excursions and Perks: Ask questions. Descriptions are flawed. Communication is lacking. The sunset catamaran cruise is lovely. The description in the hotel room says its a 2-hour tour along the coast with sparkling wine and pre-dinner bites. It's a 1 hour tour with sparkling wine, no bites. Perfectly fine but, what up? The day trip to Isla Mujeres: 9am-4pm, 1.5 hours each way with 3.5 hours to beach or rent golf carts to tour the island. However, we THOUGHT we were being taken to the sister Zoetry and would be able to enjoy the beach, pool and a lunch there. We weren't told anything when we signed up but it would be good to know you need to take lots of cash, a credit card, a drivers license (if you're renting golf cart), and everything you might need for the beach, including extra towels. To our surprise, the boat drops you off at the public North Beach with a towel and you're on your own. Unless you rent a chair at a nearby beach club, you are stuck without shade or restrooms. To get out of the sun, we had lunch at the Oceanvs Beach Club (the shrimp tacos are incredible). Most concerning, if you have mobility issues, you must get out of the boat and wade onto land and return the same way, pulling yourself from sea to boat - a problem for one of us. Box lunch provided on the return trip was a ham and cheese sandwich which neither of us eat. So glad we thought to bring a credit card and ate on land. Happy to answer specific questions. Happy Travels.

Worst vacation ever.......not worth the money!

Liquor in room is small airline bottles, not regular size bottles, bathroom sinks not clean and will not drain properly, shower was as small as a closet and hard to turn around in, toilet was plugged up, and we had to use a coat hanger to unplug, outdoor plunge pool on first floor was right next to path to beach with people walking by, no privacy, food was not good at all, cigars were selling for $100/piece, we were told this was adults only property but there were lots of children there, there was only one pool, one bar and 1 restaurant. Beach was full of seaweed, about 2 feet wide so going into the water was not possible, people walked right by our room and looked in our windows, front desk person was not very friendly. The management did try to correct the problems when we complained but we left early because we could not enjoy ourselves at this resort. Employees were friendly and shuttle to and from airport was best part of our trip.

Perfect destination getaway

The associate we worked with to book our honeymoon trip to Zoetry was amazing. He was very clear, concise and courteous. Pickup form Cancun airport was on time, and they offered us cold towels and sparkling wine, making the 25 minute drive very pleasant. A quick highway run away from Cancun and through a path cut through mangrove swamp and you're there. Upon arriving you are met with more refreshments and some customized Mayan greetings to use with the staff, making you feel very much at home in this secluded paradise. The decor feels ultra modern yet ancient at the same time. Reproductions of Mayan art and statues adorn the palace, which is the only word I can use to describe the main area of the resort. The concierge was very good at explaining what was included in our stay and which free activities we could sign up for. These activities included day trips to Isla Mujeres, a romantic boat ride, wine and tequila tasting, etc. She showed us our room and we were blown away. She let us be and we just soaked up the room and the views. All we can say is that you don't want to leave. Sure, the day trip sounds like fun, but then you're away from your all inclusive paradise, which has one of the most beautiful pools and one of the best dinner spots we've ever been to. The all inclusive package is really just unbeatable. At any point you can order whatever you want. Tipping can be handled as you go or at the end of your stay. We tried to stay within the 10%-15% range for tipping. The employees definitely deserve that. Sometimes service can be a little slow or lackluster, but that is just resort style service. These people work all day for multiple days straight and you can tell when they are getting to the end of their week. Still, most everything was handled with a smile and graciousness. The beach isn't very built up, and the sea here is not very pleasant to swim in, but that is because this is an eco-resort. The beach is as it would be without anything there. Still, is provided a beautiful vista that didn't grow tiresome the entirety of our stay. Most people opt to hang by the pool, which as I said, is amazing. The biggest let down was the wine tasting. It was more of a class on how to taste wine, not an actual tasting. Additionally, the wine you are tasting is the wine they already offer for free at the resort. So basically, you're just tasting cheaper wine in a room filled with really nice wine. Also, we were late to the tasting, along with two other couples who were also given poor instructions on where to meet for the tasting, and the sommelier was pretty rude about us showing up late. She didn't really do much to catch us up or seem to care that we were given poor instructions as to the meeting place. Overall, it was the most beautiful and comfortable resort we've ever visited. The food was amazing, as was the atmosphere and 95% of the service. Booking through Cheap Caribbean is the way to go to visit this resort, as it is a five diamond hotel.

Highly Reccomend

We chose the travel here for our honeymoon and we were not disappointed. As an American traveler the standards for service can be different from home. I own a small business that focuses on service, so it is very important to me. I loved every moment and the device was truly exceptional. Everyone one is polite and accommodating. We did bring only AMERICAN dollars which was not a problem, but we did wish we would have brought more ones and fives for tipping. We tipped the wait staff that we saw most regularly and we loved that it was almost always the same people working the same shifts. We still got excellent service when we did tip, but they were so great we wanted to! We loved the no kids small boutique atmosphere. Very romantic and clean!! The grounds are emaculate and we always had somethings new to do with there being excursions offered for extra cost. We only did the snorkeling, which was great, and a massage. We could have not done any extras and still loved it. But the coupon they provided helped to cover the cost. We are big foodies and loved the menus. Enough choices you can always get something new and everything is prepared by a chef who obviously knew what they were doing. You don't want to dine out? Just cuddle up with room service-- excellent! I can't say enough good things. We stayed only 5 days and some older couples we met said that we were so content due to being newlyweds --- which is probably true. I image we might want more night life if we had wanted to do more than just sunbathe and cuddle in the beach or by the pool. It was perfect for our honeymoon given the number of days we spent there! Thank you! We will visit again when we need a break from our fast paced life up here! Only negative would be the beach. A bit weedly at our end of the bay this time of year-- but we didn't care because the pool it on the beach.

What's to Love

The natural landscape creates a peaceful refuge where you can fully immerse into your inner Zen state of being.

A complimentary sunset cruise that makes for a great way to end the day and of course, stunning selfie moments.

The resort is decorated with unique and eclectic decor, including original art and antiques - very fancy.

Oceanfront rooms with private terraces - ideal for morning coffee or a nightcap.

The resort is in a protected national park with the world's second largest coral reef just offshore - snorkeling is a must.

The first certified Thalassotherapy Spa in North America - try the seaweed mud wrap or the Hydra 3 Facial that brightens up you skin.

On the resort's dock are PADI certified professionals and fishing charters.

What We'd Change

We've thought long and hard about it and the answer is nothing! You can't improve on five-star perfection. Even the seaweed on the beach adds the perfect imperfection.

Why You Should Go

Boutique size resort that has that secluded feeling where you really feel away from it all.

Sporty adventures like tennis, windsurfing and yoga.

Golf enthusiasts will love the complimentary greens fees at Grand Coral Riviera Maya Golf Course.

Explore around you with a shopping tour to Puerto Morelos by boat (it's free to get there, purchases on you.)

You can sweat, decompress and get the day started at the oceanfront fitness center.

Save space in your suitcase by using the locally handmade beach bag you'll receive.

Perfect your guacamole making skills at cooking class.

You can educate your palate with the vinos at wine tastings.
