Nice but Hated being Houded to Join Vacation Club

Having been a huge fan of another chain of adult all inclusive hotels, we decided to try different ones. I found TRS Coral while surfing the internet and we like the Playa Mujeres area where this resort is located. I knew the resort had opened in November 2018. We vacationed 2/27-3/6/2019. We arrived and were checked in fine, then we were passed to someone who presented themselves as being there for us 24 hours a day - we had read about the 24 hour butler service so that is who I thought we were talking to. I quickly realized the person was trying to sell me a vacation package. To say I was furious is an understatement. I did not pay good money to be sold what sounded like a "time share." I asked to go to our room, and we were taken there and then was asked to wait for our butler. I was still fuming, wanted to go to the pool, but if I had to wait for someone, how about having a beer? Impossible, the all inclusive room was not stocked until you talked with your butler. Only then sometime later would you maybe get what you wanted. Forget wine, they charge you more money. Forget getting soda's you want, they won't stock them. For example, we asked for vodka, and I asked for additional cans of tonic, only to be told no. So I learned to ask for cans at the bar to bring back to our room. I asked to speak with a manager, and someone who was not came to hear me out - I asked not to be bothered by the "vacation club" salespeople anymore. Of course the following morning promptly at 8, I was called to say they were ready to take me on our tour. Annoying - I would give this resort a much higher rating if they would abide by a simple request to leave me alone. So the first day was dicey for sure. Once we got past all of the disappointments, we focused on what is nice about the resort. The pools and beaches are very nice. The rooms were very nicely decorated. We were warned not to leave our patio door open due to mosquito's which was nice of them to warn us. We found the bars and dining staff to be amazingly accommodating. At the Italian Restaurant the chef made me an amazing piece of chicken with an asparagus sauce, which was not on the menu. Most of the meals were really good, and my husband was in heaven. The pool bar staff was fun and they worked long days with big smiles. The pool entertainment during the day was top notch. About 1PM each day there was something great. There were synchronized swimmers, violin players and small bands and singers. Very, very nice. The spa was great and you are able to use the hydrotherapy area any time and as many times as you want. It is very well appointed and large. TRS is a section of the larger Palladium family resort, so it is very big and they continue to build on. You can walk or get around via boat or carts. Your butler will call a cart for you, and you can see the boats running. There is a village area where a number of the restaurants are including a 24 hour sports bar, which has a variety of gaming activities. We did not mind going to the restaurants in the village, it was nice to see some children at dinner. So we could stay with adults during the day and have a mix of people at night. This resort included a Cabaret show. If you are a TRS guest it is included. Just be patient as they will not get you in typically until your last night. Due to the first day, our day butler got us tickets for another night. It was a great show, with a 7 course dinner. You are at tables for 2 so it is romantic and special. The performers poured their hearts out for 3 hours. We were truly impressed. We did like the resort and would recommend it, but wanted you to know what to avoid and what to ask for.

Amazing

Stop looking right now for your next vacation ... you found it. TRS Coral is the MOST beautiful place that I've ever been. The staff was awesome. The junior swim up suite cannot be beat. Stop wasting your time, and book this place RIGHT NOW. Unreal.

Terrible dining in an otherwise good resort

This review hurts to post, because I like so much about the TRS Coral. The views are amazing. The staff are insanely attentive. Great drinks and awesome rooms. Yalma and Pilar (our butlers) were awesome and extremely helpful. The bartenders are very fun and flexible. The tequila tasting and events are a blast. The reason for the 3 star review is due to the restaurants. If I were just rating the restaurant experience here, it would be a 1/5. The food/restaurants was a *huge* part of deciding which resort to go to. Because everything else has been so amazing, this stark contrast in the dining has been very disappointing. Firstly, the restaurant wait staff were awesome. They were very attentive and sought to ensure we had a great experience. The ambience and design of these restaurants are stunning, down to the slightest details. The disappointment is all in the food. There are some good dishes at each restaurant, but there are many more poor dishes that are disappointing. The benchmark I'm using is a comparable restaurant based on menu selection, design and price (if it wasn't an all inclusive resort, most would likely be $25 to $40). Le Boheme (French) - 1/5 - Fondue was good overall, would order again. Had about 5 different cheeses all blended and had an option for grilled veggies, which were great. - The Lamb was coated in a gravy that lacked any flavor. It was cooked to temperature, but was incredibly lackluster. - The lobster with hollandaise was really, really bad. It was way overcooked. Hollandaise was really sweet and didn't pair with the lobster at all. Sumptuori (Japanese) - 1/5 - The mushroom appetizer was really good. Mushrooms with chicken curry sounds weird, but was very well prepared. - The edemame cream soup was rough. Very buttery, without any flavor. - The salad I ordered was so salty and bitter, I couldn't eat it. - The Seabass was thin and a bit overcooked and didn't deliver in any significant way. Poseidon (Lunch / Dinner Buffet) - 4/5 - This is the safe bet here. Good variety, awesome fresh salads and toppings. - The taco area was great. Chorizo and beef were good. - The selection of fruits was also good. Bhohali (Indian) - 2/5 - The sauces that came out to accompany your dishes were generally too sweet, though the mint chutney was good. - The Indian tomato soup tastes like Campbell's soup out of a can. I think it is from a can with some sour cream and pepper added. Not good. - The Butter Chicken was very salty. El Dorado (Steakhouse) - 3/5 - The appetizers pesto and the antipasta appetizers were both identical stacks of veggies, one just had a bit of pesto sprinkled on. Mediocre. - The Filet Mignon was cooked perfectly. It did lack the beautiful fire grilled char on the outside and the flavor I'd come to expect with filets. The blue cheese sauce was brown and tasted like gravy. Capricho (Breakfast) - 4/5 - Good coffee and juices. They have a buffet and a la carte menu. - The buffet was done very well with breads, cheeses, meats, fruits and pastries. - I had Huevos Ranchero, which was quite delicious. Good flavors, crispy tortillas and fresh. Helios (Mediterranean) - 2/5 - The fish ceviche and mixed seafood ceviche are identical. The "mixed" has small shrimp added. The ceviche was very disappointing. Incredibly bland. - The Seafood soup was very, very salty. Not good. - The seafood Paella had a small mix of seafood on otherwise very plain yellow rice. The last resort we stayed in was older, about the same price, yet had much, much, much better food. If you are a gastronome, I'd look for another resort. Check out the Paradisus La Esmeralda in Playa Del Carmen. Similar drive from the airport and spectacular food. My advice for TRS Coral? Get an executive chef that has a very high bar for quality and has traveled to (and tasted from) many countries. Your ingredients are quality, so it's no added cost to you. The preparation has been lacking. Spend focus and time on improving your dishes.

TRC Coral

See my Trip Advisor review for the full review. Initially my girlfriend and I deliberated on TRS Coral and Live Aqua and ultimately decided on TRS. When we arrived we knew we had made the right choice. It was beautiful like a gated community. We arrived a little earlier than check-in but went to the desk anyway, and they said the resort was only 70% full and we could likely get an early check-in. So we went through the check in process. The front desk staff was super nice and friendly and even poured water into this little dish and out blossomed a cool towel. Very posh, and very nice. Then they said the room wouldn't be ready until 3pm, which was weird since they just said the resort was only 70% full. They also told us we would have a Butler (which was a unique feature we saw on the description on the website) and that he would handle dinner reservations etc and that we needed him to book them for us. We asked if we could meet him, because they said he was leaving at 3pm. So I said if we aren't checking in until 3pm can we meet him, and they said no that there would be another Butler at 3. We finally checked in and the Junior Suite was wonderful. It was spacious and clean. We noticed that on the back patio there was no hammock or swim up pool like the Cheapcaribbean website said there would be. We called and asked about switching rooms and if there was a price difference they said they would look into it and call us back. No one called. So we called Cheap Caribbean and I spoke with Desiree who agreed that the website said there should be a hammock and/or a swim up pool and that she would email me with a resolution. I never got an email. I also mentioned how Cheap Caribbean had emailed us that am telling us Frontier Airlines said we were "No shows' for our flight which didn't make sense since obviously we had arrived. She said that since they were charter flights we were supposed to mention that when checking in, yet nothing on any of the emails or paperwork mentioned this. So we waited patiently for the Butler but he never came. SO we called and they said he was on his way up. He never came. We waited 45 mins and then called again and they said he was coming up in five minutes. So we went to the pools and figured we would deal with it later. The pools were amazing. Service was nice and friendly. The swim up bar was a nice feature but it took us ten minutes to get a drink with only six people at the bar. We went to the beach and also had great service then headed back to our room to go to dinner. We spoke to the Front Desk and they said we did not need a reservation for the French restaurant La Boheme. So we walked over to it, and it was pitch black. It was closed. So we walked back to the front desk and she said “ah yes, its closed tonight” and that we should try Portifino the Italian restaurant instead. We waited out front for a ride since the restaurant was on the other side of the resort. The front desk staff asked us to wait inside because of the mosquitos and we didn’t see a single mosquito. So we said we were ok waiting outside. Another couple said the same thing. Eventually a woman came over and told us they were filming for the hotel and we needed to go inside. I am not sure why they just didn’t say that instead of telling us it was because of mosquitos. We finally got a cart and got to Portifino and it was closed as well. On a Saturday night. We quickly became annoyed and wondered if we made a mistake with not going with Live Aqua. We found a steak house El Dorado and went there and were quickly seated. The food was ok. Nothing special. My girlfriend's steak was was pretty good though. When my steak arrived it was cold and I sent it back and they heated it up and pretty sure they just gave me a new one. It was low quality. A NY Strip steak. We made the best of the night and went to the Teatro and watched the nightly entertainment which they had every night. It was a lot of fun. The next day we went to Breakfast at Capricho and it was great. We enjoyed the spa and Gym after which was wonderful, and the hot tub and infinity pools were utterly amazing. There were jets in the pool with lounge chairs you could submerse yourself in, steam rooms, saunas and a great Juice Bar upstairs called Healthy Bar where Sergio was everyday and was super nice and friendly. For lunch we went back to Posiedon which was nice but we asked to be seated outside but they said it was full. When we looked there were seven tables open. It almost seemed as if you were tree with different preferential treatment based on what type of bracelet you had on. Nonetheless the meal was good and we were satisfied. Everyone in the resort talked about how we needed to hit Chic the dinner and Cabaret show but we still didn't have a Butler to make a reservation. The first night we woke up to someone doing laps in the room above. Banging their feet just walking back and forth for over two hours. We were so tired from traveling across country and being woken up by this. Then being situated b y the laundry room we were woken up by loud crashes of either laundry and what sounded like glassware being prepared for the day. Needless to say we were annoyed we barely slept and we were exhausted from traveling. Only to make matters worse the front desk called a little before 9am we have no idea why since we picked up the phone and told them we were sleeping. Finally that afternoon we ran into someone in the hall who heard us talking about how we still didn't have a Butler and it was our second night and he said "I'll be your Butler" he came into the room and explained all the quirks. The lights were all sensor lights so if you got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom all the lights went on. And we couldn't get the in room jacuzzi tub to work because a switch had been tripped and our Butler, Chris, explained how to reset it, how to use the AC, and he installed an aromatherapy cartridge. We explained all of our concerns, about the hammock, the noise and dinner reservations and Chic. He said Chic was fully booked and we likely wouldn't get in which further annoyed us. Though it was nice these things finally got addressed, nothing else was really resolved. That night we ate at La Boheme since it was open so we went there. Of course they were out of lobster, the appetizer we wanted, and ran out of bread for the French onion soup. We stayed pretty positive considering all of what we were dealing with since our arrival. And the golf carts! they drove like maniacs sometimes and my girlfriend had to jump into the bushes to avoid being hit by one one night. The next day we decided to take a cab downtown to the market. Which was a mistake because it was completely over bearing. My girlfriend witnessed our cab driver (called by TRS) pull up to his friend on the side of the road and hand off a bag of white powder which we presumed to be cocaine. We were there for less than an hour and headed back to TRS Coral. There was a note in the room that we had a free gift downstairs. We assumed it was for a timeshare presentation but they said it was a free day trip to downtown Cancun and a tour of the ruins. But we were leaving the next day so couldn't use it. The woman at the desk said those are supposed to be handed out by the Butler the first day, but we didn't get a Butler til mid day on the second. We were frustrated as that would have been nice to use. Then while in our room we heard screaming and a woman who must have been in her 50’s was so intoxicated she was laying on the floor outside of our door and her friend was trying to pull her to stand her back up. I said something about controlling their drinking and they got annoyed and said something not so nice to me and left. Then we met our other Butler, and he said Chic was fully booked but he made a another reservation at the Steak House El Gaucho Argentenian. And that he arranged our pick up that we purchased from Cheap Caribbean for the morning at 7am. But our flight was at 10:52 am and the pick up was 7 am when we asked why he said it was because it was a shared ride. We were frustrated that Chic which was supposed to be the highlight of the trip was booked on a Monday night. We enjoyed most of the resort but it was also filled with so many frustrating components. So we went to El Gaucho and placed our order and Chris showed up and said he had gotten us a table at Chic. So we felt bad but left and he had a car for us that took us to Chic. He cancelled our order and we headed to Chic. It was the highlight of the trip and resort. There was singing and dancing and the performers were fantastic and it was a pre fixed menu And the food was amazing. It really was special and made the trip come together despite feeling like we had a bad taste in our mouth about the resort. Since we were leaving early there was no breakfast until 7 am but room service said they could come at 6:30 which they did a few mins late and it was nice to have a full meal before leaving. We got into our van and picked up NO ONE and we were super annoyed we were at the airport well over three and a half hours early. I am not sure why they said it was a ride share and yet no one else showed up. To add insult to injury during our stay I purchased a pair of Ray Bans at one of the shops and when I got home there was a huge scratch on the frame. I was not happy about it and went back. She said she was out of that model or I could exchange. I opted to keep it but now own a $146 brand new pair of sunglasses on it with a scratch. Overall on the outside TRS is like a really attractive super model but not a lot of substance. Half the time no one knew what was open and when as there seemed to be no system in place. Some of the staff seemed to care, and some couldn't be bothered or you looked like you were bothering them. It was hard to get a straight answer other than from Chris.

The Spa and Infinity Pools Main Pool with little cabanas that were hard to get we got one on last day
