Great Vacation

The pools and beach made this vacation. Not killer food but who goes on vacation to eat?

Good deal

Customer service was really good during our stay, but cold during check-in. Also, check-in did not provide upgrades that were requested via the booking agent. Check-in agent stated that there was no capacity for the upgrades, when there was obvious capacity during our stay. The beach was nice and maintained, as was the facility overall. However, I definitely would not categorize as a high-end resort, as they claim. It's an OK 3.8 star resort. I liked their sister resort next door just as much, and it's categorized as the economy version. Snorkeling was not good off the beach, so you need to take a tour (boat) to experience the beautiful snorkeling available in Cozumel. Food was decent, but small portions. Drinks were weak, so order doubles, and the quality of the alcohol was suspect. We did like that it was adults only resort. Daily/nightly entertainment was cheap.

Visit October 6-10

We just returned from this trip late last night. The online reviews we had seen before gave us a sense of what to expect so we actually went in with hopeful better than what we read but ready for the not so good. I love Cozumel and I love the fact that the beach here at this resort if one of the nicest and widest. The rocks in the water are just part of Cozumel and if you bring water shoes it is fine. The water and rocks were great for snorkeling and it was clean and no issues with seaweed or anything like that. We had prepared for a room with issues. The room was ok but certainly not what we expected for Preferred Ocean View. First of all, the view of the ocean WAS Preferred and top of the list but the room was not very comfortable and it sounded like we were in a submarine the whole time. I think we had the main water heater for the whole hotel above us as we constantly were hearing sounds like water or as we joked humped back whales. It was intense and if we had not been on an old schooner before it would have been distracting. We got used to it. However, one day we got a leak in the bathroom ceiling. A pretty consistent heavy drip that I had to use the ice bucket to contain. The maintenance crew came by quickly and we left and it was fixed. That was on the end of the first day. Another drip developed on the last morning we were getting ready to leave the resort. So I think maintenance overall needs to be ramped up. My husband was very disappointed in the food. We heard mixed reviews and again prepared for not so good but he really thought it was not at all good. The best restaurant was Bordeaux and we did eat there two of the 4 nights as it was the best. The morning we went to the Market Cafe which is the main buffet. Normal experience as with all inclusive hotels but they did not have bacon for three different times we went in. Bacon is a normal staple in most hotels and it was only offered one time. We had breakfast at Oceans one morning and thought the view of the water is great the food is not at all good. We even ordered room service only one time and specifically asked for some bacon but it was not delivered. The room service menu looked like it would be good but the omelette my husband ordered was so not good that he did not eat it. I hate to waste food but they don't let you pick the kind of fruit you want in room service. I am not a fan of papaya or honeydew. Those two and pineapple and cantelope were given. The cantalope was not ripe or something because it did not have much taste either in room service or when we went down to the main buffet. We have been not eating bread or potatoes or pastas for our health but my husband did break down to have a regular hamburger at the Barefoot Grill and I had chicken nachos. He said the hamburger was really good and the nachos were too. He really liked the guacamole at the resort so I gave him some from my nachos to put on his burger. I don't like it nearly as much as him and usually skip it but it was good and I ate some of it on the nachos. They give you a good bit. Overall the hotel was not very big and not glamorous and not as clean as we hoped. We had a great time because we wanted to get away and not worry about going to shows in the evening and not hearing kids screaming in the pools, etc. We had an enjoyable time because we learned where to stay on the beach. The pools got very rowdy a couple of days with drunk people and it was so much screaming from them one time that I was glad to stay further away at the beach. There were two pools, the Preferred one where one day had the rowdy bunch and the regular pool which had its share of rowdy but what was more disliking there was they played music over the loudspeakers from the hotel way too loud. Not very relaxing. We went to the beach hoping to get better service with tipping the servers. I think since we weren't big drinkers he did not come around very much because he could get bigger tips from keeping the rowdy bunch lubricated. So I can't say tipping helped our cause. Again overall we expected little and sadly we got very little. We did love the beach but overall I will find another hotel that is nicer and cleaner and has better reviews of food.

Amazing!

I really don’t understand how there are so many negative reviews. All of the staff were amazing and it’s just down right beautiful there. We would definitely go back! We paid extra for the Preferred Club and it was definitely worth it. At first, I was turned away about needing shoes for the beach... but oh my!! That water was incredible and unlike anything I’ve seen before. Tons of fish and aqua life! We’re in our 20s so I was afraid it would be too laid back but there was always something to do. We’ve been to Excellence Punta Cana, which was very upscale, but liked Aura much better. Antonio, the life guard by the pier, was so helpful and really made our trip great! I do recommend getting a Go pro or waterproof case for your phone because the snorkeling is unreal. I don’t see how people complained about the food considering us from the US live off fast food... the steaks and breakfast were incredible! The staff was so polite and made me feel safe at all times. We even met people there that were complaining about the resort but they were just negative Nancy’s.

What's to Love

Newly renovated in 2015-2016, this resort is all shiny, splashy new.

As of June 2018 you can bring your furry friend along!

The salvation of the cool towel and thirst-quenching welcome cocktail when arriving in paradise.

The sleek white, boxy architecture (very glam).

Hip suites with comfy beds that have private balconies or terraces and take-your-breath-away views.

Scuba diving at the epic Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and being awed by the fabled coral reefs.

You can take scuba lessons at the Dive House. Sweet.

The candlelight dinner for two on the beach while the purr of the waves serenades you.

Snorkeling under the dock that boasts stingrays and parrot fish. (One beach lover even saw a barracuda).

The world-class spa with Seaweed Wraps, invigorating hydrotherapy and exotic indigenous treatments. Swoon.

A pier to wander out on and get hypnotized by the point where the blue water meets the azure horizon.

What We'd Change

Cozumel doesn't have as many activities as Cancun. After all, it is an island. But Secrets always has a lot of adult-only activities to keep you entertained.

Why You Should Go

You're just 20 minutes away from the airport so your rockin' vacay will start before you know it.

You're just 15 minutes away from downtown Cozumel. Just a $15 (U.S. dollars) to cab it there.

You can upgrade to Preferred Club which means better rooms, private swimming pool, and much more.

The mysteriously cool Chicen Itza and Coba Ruins are a short hop away. (Ooo-ahhh).

Lit tennis courts. Woot!

You can improve your game on an 18-hole golf course designed by the great Jack Nicklaus.

The largest beachfront in Cozumel is out back.

You can try you hand at kayaking, Hobie cats and water volleyball - don't be shy. Dive in!

Bring your aqua shoes - the beach is like finely ground seashells.

Most restaurants require men to wear long pants and no flip flops.

Probably no going shirtless or tank tops, unless you're a male Abercrombie model.
