Puerto Plata Travel Tips

Best Boat Experience: Laguna Gri Gri

Venturing out a little east of Puerto Plata, about halfway to Samana is worth the trip if you visit the Gri Gri Lagoon. Motorboating into the ocean gives you great views of the mangroves and birds. Then, you'll head straight into a natural cave located right on the water. It's a different experience away from the beach and is worth it for the picturesque views.

Visit Laguna Gri Gri for a day out on the oceans of Puerto Plata.
Maimon has fresh fish in Puerto Plata.

Best Place for Local Fish: Maimon

Want to sample the freshest fist that literally melts in your mouth? Try some local fish at Maimon. Staying at the Riu Bachata or Riu Merengue resorts will give you an up close and personal view of the Maimon Bay, because the beachfront resorts are right on Maimon Beach.

Best Free Live Music: Central Park

What’s better than live music? Free live music! Puerto Plata's humble little central park is open to the public and has a charming small-town feel. Wander over on Sundays and you're in for a real treat. You'll hear local artists playing on the sqaure. Maybe if you're brave enough, you'll find yourself dancing to the beat!

Best Way to Channel Columbus: Parque Historico La Isabela

If learning a little history is on your to-do list, you've got to visit the Parque Historico La Isabela on the northwestern end of Puerto Plata. The historical park shows the remains of the site where Columbus first settled when he landed on the island of Hispaniola. There's also a museum where you can see how the native Tainos lived before Columbus.
