Best Vacation Ever
This was my first all inclusive experience, and it more than met my expectations! The service and hospitality was wonderful. Everyone went out of their way to help us with whatever we needed. The dining options were wonderful, and the activities offered on resort were a blast. There is nothing I would change about this resort! Our room was clean everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. I will definitely be back!!

Beautiful
Had a wonderful week on this beautiful resort. The staff was friendly, the place immaculate, and the beach spectacular. The food could improve, and allowing guest to throw towels on beach chairs in the early am and not showing up for hours, if at all, is rediculious. Many resorts are now not permitting this selfish act! Hope to see Catalonia follow this trend!!
Overall we had a great experience. Our favorite employees were Francesca from the entertainment team and Daniel from the spa they were so amazing and gave us great recommendations inside the resort and outside of the resort. Eric at the pool bar was also amazing. We liked how they had entertainment every night. We wish there could’ve been a little more service on the beach during the day. Also the beloved restaurant and beach area is VIP that you have to pay per day-we did not do because we didn’t think it was worth it but we did go out to dinner there one night to try it and Was cheap per person. Not bad. The Italian restaurant and Spanish tapas where our least favorite. The food was cold and just not good at all. Our favorite restaurant was the steakhouse. We both did get sick from the Mexican buffet at lunch even though it was so good. Which we ended up finding out that other people also got sick from that place. It is nice though that you do not have to make dinner reservations every night you can go to whatever restaurant you please without having to wait. The beach it’s self was beautiful and there are workers every morning that clean up the sea weed which is very nice and the ocean was so warm.
After reading other reviews I had higher expectations. There is a club called exclusive travelers which the resort is a part of. They cater to those members for sure. We were going to upgrade our room to the privileged package even with that you don’t get the same benefits as the members. Forget about topshelf liquor. When we first got there the concierge was very friendly and welcoming. He started asking questions about our age, how often we travel, who we booked through etc... he was scouting us to see about signing up for the travelers club. He even came down to the beach to hound us after we told him no. I did not want to sit through an hour presentation for something I had no interest in. Overall the staff was friendly, The room were nice, The food was ok. The after hours room service menu is hilarious. It was a ham sandwich with one slice of ham, a hot dog or a caeser salad. Forget about dancing as well unless you want to leave the resort. The only nightclub the have is a dinner and show called Rauxa and you have to pay extra. There were maybe 3 people watching the two nights I was nosey and poked my head in. I believe 80 bucks? There’s a disco advertised on the website but they were closed. The beach was beautiful, there were plenty of lawn chairs. I like that you don’t need a towel card. There is a public shuttle that is quick cheap and easy to catch outside the resort. We ended up doing more exploring then planned because we were getting bored with the resort.

Is there a beach bar (alcohol, not just juice) or drink service on the beach at the Catalonia Royal Tulum??10 answers

Chicago
There is no beach bar at this resort. If this is an amenity you are looking for, please call our reservations center at 1 800 915 2322 and one of our agents will be able to assist you.
LaurenCC
There are servers who come around periodically, but much faster to run up to the bar yourself. There is a full-service bar that is convenient to both beach and pool. The juice bar is separate.
plcon
They have a bar called "Tequila Bar" (they serve beer and have a list of drinks for free) just behind the beach and yes they serve you while you are on the beach. Also, they do have non-alcoholic juice bar on the beach which is great.
1975Impressed
The bar is poolside, just off the beach.
DJNJ
Yes - Outdoor bar next to the pool with beach and pool service. Service was awesome.
happyinlaguna
its not right on the beach but its close. close enough for me. and there are servers on the beach. Grease em up with a good tip and you should be fine.
BigErin
There is a bar next to the pool, not far from the beach. But waitresses come onto the beach taking orders and serving drinks throughout the day.
maggiemoo
Yes, it is located at the pool. There are also servers that go around taking drink orders.
Thanksdollface
Yes - there is no shortage of drink options/opportunities.
eadster
No actual bar bar right on the beach, just the juice bar. We got juice and then went to the pool bar to add a shot of rum. There is constant drink service on the beach though and they always did a great job!

How much extra does the 24-hour room service cost?3 answers
Under the amenities it says 24- hr room service ($)... That means it costs more. How much more? Thx
4 years, 57 months ago
Tulsa
The 24-hour room service is priced per item ordered.
CoryCC
You may need to double check that info. We didn't pay anything for food during our visit. Room service menu kinda sparse though.
jmama
Nothing!!! I would tip them but besides that its free. Select menu. After 11 the menu is basically a ham sandwich. But they serve cake 24/7 and you can't beat that.

How long is the ride from the airport to the resort?5 answers
4 years, 52 months ago
LM
Catalonia Royal Tulum is located 52 miles from Cancun International Airport (CUN).
MariaCC
about 90 min with 1 or 2 other stops
Shoegirl66
A bit more than an hour, and if you do shared, you are stopping to deliver other guests to their resorts along the way. Not sure we will do the shared ride again.
jmama
About an hour. If you do the shared transfer its longer. We got the shared transfer and it took about 2 hours to get there. We were the last ones to be dropped. but I enjoyed the trip. We checked out the other resorts and we saw dolphins... the ride back we got the shared transfer, we forgot to confirm with the guy the day before. and he came to get us anyways and we were the only ones in the car and it took about an hour.
BigErin
Depends on how many stops befoe you. You will most likely be the last dropped off because you're the furthest from the airport. Well worth te trip. If you have a coupe of stops befoe you it will take approx 1 hr & 45 mins. Just ask your driver to stop so you can pick up beer along the way. They'll be more than happy to do it. If they take you straight there, it's about an hr.

What is meant by Mexican alcoholic beverages being included in the all-inclusive? Is it standard beer, wine, house liquor?8 answers
4 years, 52 months ago
LM
The term Mexican alcoholic beverages would include any local Mexican brands.
MariaCC
There is a full compliment of alcohol and fruit drinks. The best was the tequila bar. All of it is included.
oceanseeker
The beer is corona. No Boston Lager in Mexico... house wine, you could buy brand wine for an additional amount. but the house wine was good!!! they have Captain Morgans, Bacardi, the absolute vodka was for exclusive club people and I am an exclusive club person and I still drank my martinis with the house vodka and it was just fine for me. it was not rock bottom liquor that's for sure. I don't know what a lot of it was but it was taste and suited me just fine. and I'm a drinker!!! lol
BigErin
It is every restaurant and every drink. No "all inclusive list."
Alison17
The beer is Mexican beer. We also drink vodka and have always requested and got Sky vodka. The have other liquor brands to choose from. You won't be sorry, everything is is A+
BummerMan
yes, that's exactly what that means. I heard several peopleask for topshelf. They were told it was for upgraded guests only, but in each case they gave it to them any way.
BigTex
They had one type of white wine, one type of red wine (Mexican wines; I didn't recognize the types) that were okay but not great. Beers were Mexican beers, one was light. Liquors were mid-shelf I would say (Malibu, Sky vodka, Bacardi, ect).
bufey21
Beers are Corona and Modelo. Wine is a red or white only, not sure of the brand or style, but the red tastes like a shiraz and the white like a cheap chardonnay. Liquor is the standard stuff you'd find anywhere. I drank Bacardi all week. They also have Captain Morgan, E&J, Martini and Rossi, Sauza, and other name brands you'd know. Tequila, wow, they probably have about 10 different kinds!

Is it difficult to get a chair on the beach? Do other guests "claim" chairs with towels early in the morning and come back later in the day?5 answers
4 years, 52 months ago
LM
Beach chair availability does depend upon the resort's current occupancy level.
MariaCC
You can always get a chair at the beach BUT if you want a shady spot, you have to go down at sunrise and put a towel on a chair. Sunrise was wonderful.
oceanseeker
They do... I don't get up early so by the time I got up I could always find a chair. and the sand is like silk and the towels are nice so if you don't you lay in the sand... or just move the towel... It really wasn't an issue for us at all and we spent all week on that beach!!!
BigErin
The resort was not crowded during our stay. We had no problem finding chairs at either the pool or beach.
Kentuckywoman
I read somewhere that they didn't allow "claiming" chairs with towels at the pool/beach. This was never an issue for us, whether we arrived at 8am or 2pm.

Do you have nightly entertainment? And if so, can you provide details?

This resort offers nightly entertainment, and also has 4 bars/lounges and a nightclub/disco to keep you busy!
BethCC
yes
Shoegirl66
around 9:30 every night there is a different show. Latin night, Comedy night, Karaoke night, black light dance show night which was awesome!!! That's was the only one we really really liked. but it was all entertaining. or just go hangout out in the tapas bar. playa is real close they are supposed to have really cool night life...
BigErin
There are events like music theme night or water circus performance in their pool that are occasionally provided to entertain the guests but there is a permanent discoteque for all guest packages as well as a night club that is cabaret style only for the "privileged package" purchasers.

Can you snorkel at the resort? Water not too rough?5 answers
4 years, 51 months ago
Taylorhorn
The beach at this resort is great for swimming and snorkeling.
BethCC
You can snorkel right off the beach. The fish come right up to you.
oceanseeker
Snorkel equipment is included. My husband did try it, but saw mostly just fish. Another couple said they saw all kinds of sights when they snorkeled. The water is rough at all!! Perfect!!
jmama
You could. Water isn't too rough. But I think there are to many people for there to be anything really cool around. I would go to front of the resort, cross the street and get on the public transport for 3 American dollars and go down to akamal beach and take one of he 20 snorkel tours. I guess your not supposed to go out side the roped area without a guide, and the guide will take you out to the reefs. it was pretty awesome!!! second best snorkeling I've ever done. first being off coki beach in st Thomas!!!
BigErin
They do not offer and free water sports and the water is fair calm when there is no storms coming.

Does this resort accept American money?9 answers
Also, does anyone know what kind of beer they offer? (my husband wanted me to ask that question)
Thank You.
4 years, 50 months ago
NEPA
The offical hotel policy in regards to currency is that it does not accept American dollars in cash. Also, most of the beer served at this resort is domestic to the area.
BethCC
Dollars were accepted everywhere put the exchange rate was bad. The only beer served is Corona
MicVacations
I noticed Corona, and we did have some, not big beer drinkers though. Yes, US dollars but cant make change for american $. I notice you said family trip, this resort is adults only. There are other resorts in the area for familes.
jmama
No American money. There is an atm (Mexican money) and everything during the week is charged to room and you pay before checking out,
The beer is Corona and Corona lite. and in the room is medello. go down to Akamal beach and right on the beach is a big bar. I don't remember what It was called but if you are facing the beach its to the right. the have a beer called akamal and its wicked good!!! it was refreshing!!! I think you'll be hard pressed to find anything better than that down there.
BigErin
Corona light.
And we paid for our excursions with American debit cards, no transaction fee as they ran it as an American charge. Other than that we haven't had to pay for anything as we did all inclusive. There aren't even bills to sign or tip jars out. So no pressure to get you to tip more
Alison17
I do not drink beer but will tell you that the liquor is very low shelf (quality) They do not use name brands
also the gift shop on the resort does not except American money
geno133133
Corona and Modelo, both kinds taste way better then they do in the states. Like it was fresh or something
Crarl
Corona and some other type of dark mexican beer.
MsKay
The gift shop is room charge only. You can tip in USD if you want to tip at all. As far as accepting USD, there isn't anything else to spend money on inside the resort. Lobster upgrade for $45 at any restaurant is also a room charge. We did a photo session and purchased a CD with our photos, and they required a credit card. They hotel will do currency exchange for you if needed. Hope that helps.
As far as beer, only Corona and Modelo.

CaitlinCC
No it does not
VROCK
No. Its the only Catalonia that doesn't have ocean views. but its got a jungle view and is very nice. I didn't miss the ocean view at all. and it kept the balcony cool enough to sit out on and gave you some privacy.
BigErin
No, the layout is not so the rooms face the ocean. Its more of a jungle type setting, however the beach is beautiful.
kp2014
NO rooms have a ocean, bay, lake, pond nothing.
In fact it is a 2 block walk to the beach from your room. This is through a mangrove so you see a lot of trees. ok you see nothing but trees for 2 blocks.

how is the nightlife on the resort? what do they do each night for the guests?
also is it close to playa del carmen?
3 years, 48 months ago
usa
This resort offers several bars that are open until 2am and does provide nightly entertainment to the guests. It is approx. 30 minutes from the town of Playa del Carmen.
BethCC
There is a show every night and the Disco is open until 2 AM. Staff were there to keep the party going as long as the could last.
The resort is 10 minutes south of Playa Del Carmen.
MicVacations
We are not much about nightlife. However, there is a disco and several bars open at night. There are shows nightly like broadway music, and other live shows. Very close to Playa del Carmen and the staff will help you determine best way to get there. We had a taxi take us to the shopping district it was great $50 altogether and we were able to go when we wanted, return when ready.
jmama
Playa is about 25 minutes away. They have entertainment at the resort but not all that great., the music at the disco sucked, they need to update.
VROCK
not much night life. There was disco but we only went one night for like 6 mins. They did have shows everynight at 9:30. The black light show was really cool. The Latin show was cool. The comedy show was kind of funny. Personally after a full day of drinking and sun and whatever activities we did we weren't looking for any night life. Talk to Zooey in the lobby, she'll take you clubbing.
Yes it is maybe a 15 min drive to Playa. just go outside the resort and hop the public transport into town. Its cheap and easy and runs till 12am I think.
BigErin
night life sucks. in fact there really is none.
one very very poor show at 9:30 disco at 11:00
not sure how far playa is
geno133133
There really isn't a nightlife so to speak. The restaurants stay open late, as does the bars. There do have a Discotech in the main lobby and live entertainment from time to time. But really, there isn't the type of nightlife that involves mingling with others. Unless you go to the bars. From what I saw, most people stayed to themselves with the groups they came with. I did not see to many strangers speaking to each other. People are friendly there, so do not hesitate to speak up, just something I did not see happen often.
I did see signs for Playa Del Carmen but did not go. I would assume, based on the signs that it is close enough for a taxi, but I am not totally sure.

What is the cost from the airport to the hotel? How do we get to the hotel from the airport
3 years, 39 months ago
Steph
Round trip shared transfers are offered through Cheapcaribbean.com at $47.50 per person.
CCGreg
We used a transfer service - USA Transfers. It cost us $30 per person each way but it was a private shuttle and took us directly to our resort - no stops at other resorts. There were only two of us. If you have a larger group, you pay less per person. They were very professional and prompt. Would highly recommend them!
BBCPA
We chose to get a public taxi when arriving at the airport, they are readily available. It cost $110 US round trip when arranged before you depart the airport.
travelbug85
It is best to book your ground transportation at the same time you book your reservation. I believe we usually pay around $60 per person, but it is well worth the price. Takes all the stress away because everything is planned in advance.
Kentuckywoman
depends how many people. if 2, you can have a shuttle booked along with the trip. If it's 4 - taxi may make sense.

Is the resort ALL Inclusive? I have seen some reviews that the entire resort is not part of the ALL inclusive rate?

This resort is All Inclusive - it includes unlimited Food and Beverage.
As far as to whether this resort is smoke free, please call one of our Beach Experts for first-hand accounts on what this resort includes. You can reach us at 1.800.915.2322.
SamCC
You can smoke at the beach. Everything is all inclusive except for the spa and gift shops.
CaribbeanCourt
This resort was not smoke free but no one smoked in food areas. They smoked outside on path on benches or in beach or pool chairs. There were not a lot of smokers and if you were by chance by one there were plenty of places to move so you were not near them. The maintenance cleaned the dead cigarette containers all day long so we never saw cig. trash. The insides buildings were smoke free as far as I could tell or I didn't notice smokers which I would have as I hate smoke.
Ched
It is NOT a smoke free resort. I saw people on the beach, pool, and restaurants smoking. I did NOT see any smoking inside the restaurants that were indoors. Most restaurants are open air, so the ocean breeze keeps the smoke from lingering.
Yes, it is ALL inclusive unless you personally make additional purchases. I spent time in the spa...that was extra, I bought from the gift shop...that was extra. However, the resort IS all inclusive. The room, the food, the entertainment, the pool, the beach, the drinks (99% of them) are all included. Had I not went to the spa or gift shop I would not of even needed my wallet while I was there. However, bring some singles for tips....that goes a long way there!
Canty
I believe all the rooms are smoke free. The grounds around the resort are not. And for some reason it felt like I went when all smokers where there. That was the only bad thing on this trip. People need to quit...

What is freshwater pool?5 answers
The details section states there is a freshwater pool by the beach. What does that mean?
How many pools does the resort have?
3 years, 37 months ago
Robbie
Freshwater pools use freshwater instead of saltwater. The reason this hotel specified that it is freshwater is because their pool is located close to the beach/ocean.
CCGreg
There is only one pool, but it was very nice. Not sure that it was freshwater but it was clean and clear. No swim up bar, but the bar was very close to the pool.
BBCPA
Its a chlorine pool, as opposed to salt water. There is a big pool, with volleyball on one end, and then another small pool (only about 3 feet deep).
travelbug85
1 large pool, 1 shallow pool with lounge chairs inside
maggiemoo
The one big main pool is a "regular" pool, as in it is not a salt water pool. There is a small "soaking" pool in the Executive Club area that had 8 lounge chairs in it and was 1.5 feet deep, but we saw lots of regular guests using it on and off. There is also an elevated hot tub area the is for all the guests. It looks like it is in the BLoved Privileged section, but it is open to all guests.

The weather is hot and humid, esp btn the months of May-Sept. Definitely pack a couple of bathing suits and sandals, and some (2-3) comfy/ nice outfits to go to dinner with your partner. I packed a simple, black dress and a skirt that I could wear with different tops. You also want to pack some comfortable shoes if you're planning to go see the pyramids.

Are 18 year olds considered adults?5 answers
My husband and I would like to come with our two kids who will both be 18. They are very mature and trustworthy. Wasn't sure if adults only would be an issue or not. Please let us know as we'd like to book a trip in July.

Hello,
Yes, 18 year old are considered adults.
bthornton
18 is fine. When they say Adults only it is mainly because the beach is topless. And trust me....VERY FEW were topless and most of whom were topless...you would prefer them not to be! As for the men, many of the men wear just speedos or smaller. Basically...there is a real good chance you will encounter more skin on the beach in one way or the other than you would at a family friendly resort. In my week, I saw nothing more than 3 topless ladies, all over 50 years old, a about 50 speedos, 20 were probably to small. However, I can see speedos on a Miami beach so it really is no big deal.
Canty
In Mexico, yes.
BigTex
I don't think so. There were very young people there. However there is not many activities to do for young people. They did have volleyball, water aerobics, and other events throughout the day but not much for young kids. The place itself would be fine for them though!

Sure, lots of daytime sports activities

Not officially. We didn't see any around the pool. There were always 1-4 ladies on the beach and it seemed accepted. Mostly European guests at this hotel, and it is their culture.

Is the beach a far walk from the rooms?5 answers
On the Google aerial view it looks like the rooms are located quite a walk from the beach.
1 year, 23 months ago
SunshineJayne
The beach is not a far walk, depending on your room location it would be a short 5 minute-15 minute walk. You can always request that your room be as close to the beach as possible. This is on a request-only basis and cannot be guaranteed, but the resorts always do their best to accommodate requests.
JeannieCC
No, it's only a five minute walk. The walkway through the jungle area to the beach is lovely during the daytime, but at night there are colored lights in the trees and it is spectacular!
Kentuckywoman
No, its not bad at all. The resort it self isn't that big. But very nice.
Convic
The longest walk is approx 10-15 mins at a slow pace. It's a small, but beautiful resort.

The walk to the beach is probably about a 5 minute walk, but you walk through a rain forest with lots to see.

is there any dress code for restaurants?5 answers
1 year, 23 months ago
Greg
There's no official dress code, however here is a link going over the various dress codes. Generally you'd want to follow Casual/Resort dress code.
JeannieCC
Just dress nice, you can wear shorts. Be respectful.
Convic
You do not need to wear slacks. Thats a big plus for me. But it's customary to wear dress shorts & dress shirt to the restaurants.
BigTex
They like the women to dress up but nothing fancy- nice summer dress or jumper. Men they like to have shoulders covered- no tank tops but polos and shorts are ok!

I never saw any information about a dress code. Most people dressed in nice casual clothing to dine at the restaurants.

How can I get a Bali bed on the beach?5 answers
Are the Bali beds only with upgraded packages? The actual CRT website explains they come with the privileged junior suite, but cheapcaribbean.com does not have any mention of them (not that I found anyway...)

There are bali beds in the Executive Club area buy the little pool. We never saw any EC guests the whole time we were there this month any regular guests used them all the time to sleep or read. I don't specifically remember any of those on the beach though. There are huge beach bean bag type chairs, all weather lounge couches, and hammocks on the beach that everyone can use. No need to upgrade!

Do you have, on the resort ,COORS LIGHT ? It is an American beer for us to drink in the all inclusive?5 answers

This resort only has domestic alcohol as part of the all-inclusive.
JeannieCC
The resort has Corona Light and Modelo dark on tap and you get can modelo light in your room that's the only beer option
Bosslady34
I didn't ask specifically for Coors Light, but I only ever saw Mexican beers.
bufey21
They only have Corona and Modelo. Although every time I asked for a Corona, they pulled the Modelo tap. But, it's free beer. If you want Coors or other American, have your taxi or shuttle stop at a store and get a case on the way in and put it in your mini fridge in your room. We did that with a nice bottle of wine.

Is the privileged upgrade worth the additional cost?5 answers
What do you get with upgrade? Is it worth it?
1 year, 17 months ago
Detroit
Whether or not the upgrade is worth it is based upon personal preference. The Privileged rooms include extras like
Wireless Internet access, 2-line Telephone with bathroom ext., free access to the spa wet areas, privileged area at the beach and more.
JeannieCC
It was not worth it. Very little offered. Some top shelf liquor.
Marie127
I felt as though it was worth the cost just for the food alone. The BLoved restaurant is worth it. Also, the 10% off all other resort fees was nice if you plan to spend time in the spa or make any purchases in the gift shop. Also, you get a "private" part of the beach, which is really just a separate roped off section, but it is a bit more spacious and there are beach beds that are first come, first serve which are not available on the other side. Plus, they give you little extras like a fruit basket in your room and sparkling wine and a bottle of tequila.
eadster
Yes, you get access to the spa, 24 hour room services, beloved restaurant and better alcohol choices. But I would recommend upgrading through cheap Caribbean, it's cheaper. There's a detailed list on the resort website that tells you what you get.
Dbrown
I don't think it is worth the upgrade but it is very personal.
You get access to a sleeping room in Buildings 1 and 2. This is "closest" to the beach. Yes, that is true but it is still a 5-10 minute walk to the beach and there is no view. It also means you are closest to the loud beach entertainment. And farthest from the lobby which is where all the dinner options are.
You also get access to the B'loved restaurant which is a small restaurant/bar between the pool deck and the beach. It is the only a la care breakfast and lunch option. They also have dinner and drinks. I didn't taste the food there but heard it was good.
You also get early check in.
When we went, it was $25 per person per night to upgrade so we felt our $200 was better spent on excursions.

There was a wide range of ages here - from young to mid 20's to people well into their 70's. We were in our early 40's and felt as though there was a place for everyone.

We are in our mid-30's and met lots of nice people in their 60's, some still working and some retired. You will be in good company, don't worry! We didn't really see anyone there that looked past late 60's. A lot of Italian's in their 30's - 50's I'd say.

Surrounding area fun?5 answers
I am wondering about entertainment or fun places outside of the hotel that are safe to go to. Has anyone taken a taxi, walked off the grounds? I know Tulum is close by as well a few other cities. My boyfriend love the look of the resort, but we also may want to explore on our own. Is there anything fun close by? are cabs safe?
1 year, 16 months ago
Wisconsin
Tulum, Xel-Ha, XCaret, and Playa Del Carmen are all nearby. Cabs are easy to get and a safe way of transport. You could also set up a guided tour for any of the above activities.
CCGreg
Yes we took several trips off the resort. They have specific drivers they use and will call them for you. Their is a ton of different things to do all over especially a place called Xplore fuego. Its a park, everything was well organized and extremely safe. We also walked to about a mile each way on the beach and loved the sights
kcussat
Yes it is very safe. We walked up the road one day. There are two amazing cenotes for snorkeling right across the street. I think it was about $5 to get access but well worth it. We took a collectivo (white local van bus) to Tulum one day. Raised a hand on the side of the road and hopped in with about 10 locals and took a ride! It was fun. About $4 to Tulum. Ate at a taco shack along the road spent the day at the ruins. Collectivo on the way back too. No problems and had a blast! We also took a taxi to Playa. About $7 if I remember right. Very safe and easy. They picked us up right at the hotel lobby. No worries there. Very safe area.
Likefonzie
Taking a taxi is safe and economical. There are staff who will call a taxi for you. There are rates posted in the lobby but you should always ask the taxi driver to confirm the price, and yes, they ALL understand English and are adept at converting Pesos to Dollars.
We took a taxi to Akumal Bay, an area noted for snorkeling with 2 to 3 restaurants, 15 minutes south which cost $260 pesos (about $14.00). We grabbed a taxi back asking what the charge would be and he quoted $300 pesos back. I told him $260 and he readily accepted.
Tulum would be about 20-25 minutes further south and Playa del Carmen would be about 20-25 minutes north.
MrSlappy
Tulum is about a 20 min cab ride and cost about $45, we only went down during the day and it's a small town with a few bars and restaurant, I'm not sure what it's like at night. We planned on going to playa del carmen but never got around to it, it's probably about the same distance. The cabs were very clean and organized.
P.s look at the state department warnings about playa del carmen that have recently been posted!

BLoved Lounge & Restaurant – Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner with organic menú. A la carte
Private area at the beach
Alegria Spa free access to humid areas (jacuzzi, sauna & steam room)
10% off in all the extra hotel services
Late check-out (subject to availability)
Privileged Junior Suite- In addition to the Privileged Deluxe rooms amenities:
On the first day – Fruit basket
On the third day – Tropical fruit & Tequila
Balinese Bed (1 day during stay) sparkling wine, fruit & chocolates
CCGreg
There is a difference with privileged upgrade. Another restaurant and better liquor.
Chad727
Privilege upgrade gets you access to the BLoved restaurant and bar and top shelf alcohol at all the bars. Also a reserved section on the beach, but it is all the exact same lounge chairs as everyone else gets. I can't speak for the food at the BLoved restaurant as we didn't upgrade, but we saw a lot of people with the Privileged purple wrist bands eating at all the same other restaurants that we were. We also drank Bacardi and other higher end liquors all week. We did not think that the Privilege upgrade was worth the cost. We did get a free upgrade to just the Privilege room though, and it was very nice, ground floor of the middle 3000 building. Zero difference in the pool area.
Likefonzie
The privileged beach area also comes with upgrading your room which I highly recommend! The privileged beach area tends to be less crowded and has nice bean bag seats and beds. You are also able to eat at a restaurant called "beloved" which is setup nicely & has great food!

Outside of the room, the upgrade includes a private section of the beach, which is the only area that gets waitered drink service. Also you get an exclusive restaurant that is open for all 3 meals, as well as drinks throughout the day. Included an outdoor-oceanview public hot tub and access to the facilities in the spa.

We saw lots of families with adult kids. Everyone enjoys a pool and the beach, right?! Lots of couples, but I wouldn't call it a couples resort at all. Just adults with no children or children's activities. There is a pool table, gym, boogie boards, stand up paddle boards, kayaks, snorkel gear, all free.

It doesn't look like we are currently offering the super saver room category for this resort.
JeannieCC
There are only two room grades, and the upgrade does not (in our opinion) add nearly enough value to make it worth the price. It adds top-shelf liquor, one more restaurant, and a small beach section right next to the rest of the large beach.
TomLititz
The only thing you are giving up is the nicer room that is closer to the ocean. The walk from the farthest building is not far at all so the walk is actually very nice at night.
You would not receive the nicer beach chairs. in the privileged section as well as access to the beloved restaurant.
We just returned from our vacation and only would have upgraded to just go to the restaurant which the menu looked fantastic.
MKEWI
none of the rooms are on the beach they are all in a row in what I called the jungle. The beach is at the end of the row. So building 1 and 2 are close to the road and the front desk and building 5 and 6 are close to the pool and the beach. The super saver rooms are most likely smaller. I do know that building 5 and 6 have recently been remodeled.

By booking a privileged room you get access to the spa room and a privilege only restaurant that was pretty good.

Environmental Levy Fee
The Municipalidad of Solidaridad in the Rivera Maya is one of the most beautiful places in the Mexican Caribbean. Tourism has been instrumental in driving the economic and social development of the region. In an effort to continue to preserve, conserve and beautify the destination, the Municipality of Solidaridad has implemented a small environmental levy on visitors effective September 1, 2017. Hotels will collect 20 Mexican pesos per room per day on check out; the proceeds will be deposited in an environmental trust to fund local projects. The Municipalidad of Solidaridad thanks you for your understanding and support of this worthwhile endeavor. Thank you and enjoy your visit.
