    Traveling as a solo female.

This was my very first solo trip and I couldn’t have asked for a better resort. No, there isn’t a beach. It was washed out by a hurricane. For me, it didn’t matter as I’m not a big ocean / beach person anyway. The property was very well maintained. It’s not overly large, so restaurants and bars are only steps away. The staff is absolutely amazing. As a female traveling solo, I was very well taken care of. Ismarai from the pool bar, Carlos Sanchez from Boathouse Restaurant and Victor / Rafael from Salted Rim were all super amazing. The food was great in all restaurants. My only complaint would be the noise levels overnight. I know we can’t control the party people, but the carts that room service used were super loud and always disrupted my sleep so bring really good ear plugs. All in all it was fantastic and I look forward to returning.

    Exceptional 5 star spa experience.

Our group of three couples recently visited the Margaritaville Island Reserve Spa, and had the most amazing experience. We were greeted by an amazing front desk team — Carlos, Alexis, David, and Eleanor — all of whom were professional and kind. They made us feel welcomed, relaxed, and taken care of from the start. We then proceeded to the hydrotherapy area, where our attendant Alexis went above and beyond. This pre-relaxation experience set us up for what was next. Each couple enjoyed a 50-minute massage, and we cannot say enough about Ana and Wendy. Calling their massages “5-star” doesn’t even do them justice. This spa delivered on every level and we will be back.

    Good but not great...

so my first tip is to get a private transfer from the airport as it takes a long time to get your suitcase and you end up waiting for everyone else to do the same. it's only a 20 min drive from the airport and I costed Uber at less than $20, and you'll get there much quicker than the main transfer bus which was hot and tiny, so legroom at all. Then to first impressions: we arrived at 5pm and the place was dead, it was really eerie. we were allocated our room which had a fusty smell and a really awful view of just a path and some overgrown branches. I had emailed the hotel 2 weeks prior to arrival and requested a twin room as we were 2 friends travelling but no, of course we had a double bed, so off we trudged to reception only to be told that that type of room doesn't have twin beds, so we swapped for a pool view room at $180 extra cost. Just time consuming, expensive and unnecessary if they'd answered my email in the first place. First impressions of the Boathouse for first dinner was that it was freezing inside, but we did get used to it eventually. we also found the Landshark really cold indoors too, I don't know why they crank the aircon up so much. it was much more comfortable to sit outside. Food in these 2 places was OK, nothing special. and oh my god, please make the porridge hotter! the 2 a la carte restaurants were generally OK, but the service was a bit hit and miss and portion size in the Italian was laughable, so make sure you order lots of courses. Now on to drink - it took me 6 days to actually get a Pina Colada - in Mexico. ridiculous. the bars just kept running out of everything and you had to go over to another bar to try and get what you want. the wine was passable but not that nice. Atmosphere - this improved as the days went by and we met some really nice people but some days the main pool was really noisy and just full of drunk people from about 4pm onwards. we stayed at the quieter pool but you could still hear the music/cackling all the time. sunbeds weren't an issue supply wise but because of the seaweed/beach issue, it was impossible to sunbathe near the beach due to the awful sulphur smell. and the sea was disgusting, just black/brown like an oilspill had happened. I knew about the lack of beach but I did not expect to see black water lapping at the hotel wall. In general, I have been to much nicer hotels for much less money and I'm really disappointed I didn't go with my gut feeling and book El Dorado Royale as I've been there before and it's just so much better than Margaritaville. if any UK people are reading this review, it reminded me of Butlins! Just no touches of luxury anywhere and the sunbeds were uncomfortable. The room was freezing every time we walked in, the cleaners should just keep the aircon off while you're not in the room but they kept turning it back on! What else.... oh the coffee shop where you're supposed to go and choose whatever drinks you want for your room. Well that's fine if you only like beer and plain/cheese crisps. there was nothing else! we couldn't even have a bottle of wine from there without paying. the concept just didn't work for us. Despite all of the above, we did get settled in to the vibe and enjoyed the good parts, but they were too few and far between for me to every go back to this resort, even with a beach. A lot of people seemed to be of the same opinion which is not reflected in these reviews, which I find a bit strange so i wanted to give an honest review of what we experienced.
