Catalonia Royal Tulum - Not Great

This hotel is ok. Its a trek from rooms to beach/buffet restaurant. The hotel offers boules and a pool table - none of which were provided whilst we were there. If we had known we would not have booked this hotel. The rooms need a good clean, there was dirt on the wall lights and also on the top of the wicker sofa. The room only provides a small bin in the bathroom, needs to be bigger. The shower is not great. We will not be back. We have had better in Mexico!

Great time - unitl the last few days...

Date of Stay: Oct 11, 2025 - Oct 21, 2025. Overall, our stay at the Catalonia Playa Maroma was nice. This is our 6th time there. We only had 1 bad experience which is noted at the end of this review. If you speak English at this resort, you will be a minority. Some people like this, others hate it, and some don't care. My wife and I are from the U.S.A. and had a wonderful time though most people were from other countries. Hotel The hotel is small by most standards. The hotel rooms on the property are in various building spread out over the property. There is a lot of walking involved. My wife and I don't mind as it's good exercise to more around a little bit. No matter where you go, be it the beach, to eat, front desk, or your room... you will be walking. The walks are scenic with lots of trees and small animals running about. Rooms My wife and I stayed in the basic room and had everything we needed. The rooms aren't flashy, but they don't need to be. We never stay in the room unless it's to shower and sleep. We requested a room on the 3rd floor. There are no elevators, so walking up and down the stairs provides a little additional exercise. The rooms have a safe, closet, and fridge. The fridge was stocked daily with cold sodas and beer. Maid service was good, never had any complaints. Animation Can't speak for this, we never attended. Beach During our stay, seaweed was not a problem. Every morning employees would go out on the beach and rake it, making everthing look really nice. You can go for long walks up and down the beach from the hotel. There are only a few hotels, and you have most of the beach to yourself. Pool The water was always warm, but what do you expect when the sun is beating down on it all day long? We spent very little time at the pool, but we'd think that pool people would love it. Food My wife and I are low maintenance. We only at at the buffets. Breakfast was always great and is really hard to beat. Lunch and dinner have a lot of options. Some good, some bad but you can always find something good to eat and leave fully satisfied. We never at at a restaurant where you had to make a reservation. There use to be several food trucks out by the pool. They were no longer there. There also was an ice cream shop next to the pool. It is no longer there. There is a nice coffee shop, but it's kind of hidden. It has a lot of goodies to choose from. Now for the bad... our toilet broke the last 2 days of our stay. We reported this to the front desk 5 times. Each time they said they'd send someone to fix it. No one ever showed up - NEVER. We ended up having to use the toilets in the common areas. This was the only negative during our trip.

    Painting in Paradise

Catalonia Royal Tulum is just a paradise! Being located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum it offers both: peace without many tourists AND easy and fast access to the main attractions. Besides daily activtities such as aqua gym, occasional activities such as the canvas painting at the beach with a professional painting teacher Monika never gets you bored. The entertainment team Paulina, Tita, Eddy, Abraham and Diego are just so lovely and make you smile every day. Totally recommend!

    A perfect tropical honeymoon

We stayed here for a fortnight for our honeymoon. The entire trip was perfect from start to finish. The hotel is BEAUTIFUL. The setting of being in a jungle is such a wonderful experience, feeling remote but entirely catering for all of your needs. The room was immaculate and the staff maintaining our room left lovely attention to detail making it more special. The restaurants were all lovely, with so many options. The idea of having a restaurant choice each evening instead of the ordinary all inclusive buffet is inspired! Again, the staff are a credit and the service is outstanding. The pool area is lovely, more than enough beds in a daily basis and the choice of a spot there or on the immaculate beach! The entertainment staff were so welcoming and happy, engaging people well during the day. Whilst we didn’t get involved, it was fun to watch people enjoying themselves. The morning and lunchtime welcome at the buffet restaurant near to the pool was so lovely. Angeles and Quetzabel made the effort to learn our names and room number, welcoming us like old friends every day, they are beautiful, warm people who are outstanding at what they do. We felt so appreciated and seen by both of them, it was so sad to say goodbye. The wildlife! My goodness! As an animal lover, this place kept me very happy. Beautiful birds - huge Ospreys, pelicans and vultures at the beach. Jays, iguanas and coatis in the jungle. Turtles, finish and comerants at the water section. So. Many. Lizards!! There isn’t a bad word to say about the place, wildlife is all over, the hotel is spotless, the staff are amazing, the location is something very special and the vibe is perfect. Thank you for making our honeymoon everything that we wanted it to be. We absolutely loved our time here and would 100% recommend to other people ❤️
