Nice hotel... good location
This hotel was very nice. The gym was out of the way, but it had everything you could want. The property was nice. The pool with the swim up pool bar wasn't much of a "swim-up". They hardly ever had anyone there. You had to get out of the pool and get your own drink. That same pool wasn't cleaned very well daily. Many people use it, it's by the beach, and the people drinking are all there. There is sand, wrapper, etc. in the mornings. The views are great and it's directly across from the market. Great location. The staff was really nice as well. We did enjoy our stay and would stay there again if we return.
Please note that my ratings are from 2007, when it was still the Westin. It could be better now, or it could be worse.
I really enjoyed my stay, but I would highly recommend avioiding the restaurants onsite and eating over at the Lucaya marketplace, which is literally just across the street. MUCH cheaper, and the food is better.
I have heard complaints of th staff being rude, but I had no problems with them myself.
Although the weather did not cooperate at all - we had a good time at this resort. Because it is a 3 minute walk from the "market" with many shopping and dining options, you did not need a car. The hotel overall was good although the prices for drinks/food within complex were steep. The pools were very nice and right on the beach which was pretty. The fitness center was very nice. It's a perfect 3-4 night getaway with plenty in walking distance. The staff needed to be "beefed" up a little but it was there quiet season with not many guests. Good value through Cheap Caribbean.
This was my 5th trip to this resort. Used to be a Westin. Beautiful property, but could use a little maintenance. Beaches are stunning and love the infinity pool. Noticed cutbacks in hotel staff compared to prior visits. Of the ~600 rooms, only 60 were occupied. We couldn't understand why they don't do more to promote this resort. A few days the hotel rented pool and beach facilities to cruise ship guests. Then the pool was swarming with people. Pool attendants weren't very friendly and bar staff were not very outgoing either. Love the resort but there's room for improvement.

the resort taxes and fees are included in the package price, however, you'll want to check with your airline to see if the departure taxes are included.

Yes, just follow all instructions by Cheapcaribbian.com......x all the right boxes to make sure all is included in your payment. All you have to worry about is how big and heavy your checked in luggage is. That will be the only thing you'll find out at the last minute what it will cost, per the weight. (which I am sure you know all about)

what's the beach like?4 answers
Is the beach good for swimming/snorkeling? Are the waves gentle or rough? Is it safe for kids to wade in?

Hi Edmund,
This resort has a beautiful beach, 7.5 acres of beautiful white sand . The water is very swimmable with generally gentle surf. It is perfect for all water sports, including swimming and snorkeling.
ccsusan1
Beach is good and offers Life Guard .. waves are normal and generally good for swimming..winter winds can cause some chopiness..Snorkeling is better suited for an excursion to get farther out..not to expensive

BEAUTIFUL!!! I think it depends on the weather. The first 3 days we were there the ocean was slick. Everyone was snorkling. The last 2 days there were small waves. I think it is hit or miss.

safety/things for teenagers and pre-teens to do5 answers
Is the beach safe and secured from aggressive peddlers? is it a private beach for resort guests only? what activities are there for teenagers as well as younger children? is the resort family friendly?

Our Lucaya has one of the best beaches on Grand Bahama and is very popular. The beach is shared with another resort and is also frequented by visitors from cruise ships while in port. While it may on occasion get a liitle crowded is is very safe. The resort is very family friendly with a Kids Club for the younger guests and plenty to do for the older children as well. One of the pools has a two story tall water slide-guaranteed to appeal to all ages! The location is prime-right across the street from the Lucaya Marketplace, with a nice selection of shops and restaurants. The Marina is very close by and has many excursions to choose from, including swimming with the dolphins. Our Lucaya is a wonderful vacation choice for a family!

Property was somewhat quiet on our travel due to low season and island occupancy challanges.. great pools and facility but teens etc
might find some "entertainment " across the street at Port Lucaya as per disco, bars ,evening bands,restaurants....Beach is legaly open to all but in practice is primarily guests.. Hotel has begun charging an access fee(grounds) to cruise day trippers and has reduced walk about dramatically....

While on the resort I was asking myself the same questions as I have three nieces I would like to take on the next trip. The resort guest have to wear wrist bands but that does not stop just anyone from entering the property. There are cruise ships that bring in people to use the beach at the resort. In my opinion there would not be much for small children to do unless the resort offers something in the summer time like a camp, I would call the resort and ask. In my experience anywhere has its dangers but as long as you educate yourself and your family on not going anywhere alone and not going anywhere without a cell phone or just roaming around at night, you should be okay. We did have one guy kind of follow us while outside the resort which became annoying but we ended up just staying on the resort after that happened. I do not think he meant any harm but you cannot be too careful. Just be smart about your decisions.

Yes - The beach is private and there is an array of activities for teenagers there.

The beach is private and totally safe. The only people on the beach were hotel employees and hotel guests. The hotel employees were very friendly and never tried to sell us stuff.

The Grand Lucayan is an EP resort, which means that it is not an all-inclusive property. Any meals, drinks, activities, etc would be at an additional cost.

No. You will need to buy your own meals and drinks.

meals and activities5 answers
I know that this resort is not all inclusive, but I was wondering the approximate price for meals and activities. I am trying to figure out if if it better to go with an all inclusive resort or this one.

kate7911
All Inclusive resorts are typically cheaper than resorts which are not an All Inclusive but offer a meal plan like Grand Lucayan, a Radisson Resort. The best way to see specific rates is to price out the same travel dates for Grand Lucayan and one which is an all inclusive resort.
MariaCC
I am pulling this from memory and I am sure the prices can change anytime but, there were two of us and we ate for about $35 for both of us each meal. The buffet on the resort is prob the best way to go. The resort has FREE activities scheduled daily but make sure to ask for an itinerary as they did not give us one when we checked in. It includes a golf swing lesson, a tennis lesson, pool volleyball and so on. The beach activities included banana boat for $15 per person, $70 for wave runner for 45min, $40 for snorkeling, and that is all I remember. This is a nice resort and I would recommend it to anyone. We plan on visiting every year in January for now on.

The prices are all over the place (I'm including the fact that there is a small shopping center across the street with cheap fast food).
Neel
I wouldn't go all inclusive here..too much to see and explore..and its cheap enough not to.
BahMa
Loved this resort. clean and beautiful.
breakfast- buffet was around $13.00. lot of choices, food was fresh, lots of fruit options.
food by the pool- just so-so. sandwiches and fries, drinks, salads about $8.00- $12.00.
did not eat dinner there. wanted to try China Buffet but we were too busy and once they had a wait. looked and smelled good. prices around $18.00 to $20.00 and up there.
lots of places to eat directly across the street at an open market place. all prices and varied options including Bahamian foods.

The trip we took was not all inclusive. However, between the marketplace across the street and the resturants on the resort you could eat for about $35 for two people. I did not think this was too bad.

I'm not sure what deal you're looking at, but I purchased a deal for the Grand Lucayan a few weeks ago, and it was not all-inclusive. All you got was the room, and use of the property. But the property is great. We had to pay for meals. There is a marina across the street, however, with plenty of restaurants, including fast food.
Neel
I do not believe it is all inclusive, but the food on the island is not expensive at all..totally worth going! Port Lucaya the Marketplace right here has some great restaurants that are great and for 2 people each night we spent anywhere from 40-60 with apps and drinks included with our dinners.
