Beautiful resort

The Grand Lucayan is well run and kept clean. Ocean front rooms have great views, especially as that we were on the 7th floor. Lower floors only see palm trees. Our favorite restaurant on site was China Beach.

Nice going back

Prior to the hurricane 12 years ago, we were frequent visitors (3-4 times a month) bringing large aircraft groups to Freeport. This Island has always held a special place in my heart as the people are so amazing. Decided to go back and I admit it was very sad to see that the Island has not recovered in all these years and is just not the same... BUT, it was time to make new memories and we did :-) Everyone was just as warm and welcoming as ever... the Caribbean and beaches were just as beautiful as they were... my peas & rice were some things don't change... was was sad was that the rooms were not in good condition... if something was broken, that's how it was... cleaniness of the rooms was suspect and everything just looked old and used... we had to go thru 4 rooms to find one which had a room safe that locked/worked... there were no towels/face cloths in my room.. and we had asked for a king oceanfront and got a queen.. I decided to stay in the room as I had already unpacked and I must admit that my view was excellent..My daugher's room was changed 3 times so we could fnd a workable safe. I will say that everyone at the front desk, housekeeping etc were awesome in getting us situated but after a long trip, was just now what we wanted to go thru but again, the staff was wonderful ! The buffet at lunch and dinner was totally awesome. The beach and pools were super nice and again, the staff were great. Would I go back.. definitely yes.. but with lower expectations, but understanding that these people are doing the best with what they have ! The Lucayan market is just as nice as always and you will find several good restaurants there and the pina coladas in the coconuts are awesome as ever ! I love Freeport and I love the folks there ! They are inventive and creative... wonderful, friendly people who love their Island home. I hope everyone will pay a visit or return as I did !

Not much excitement

We were upgraded to ocean view at check in (no charge), which was the best part of the stay. It was only the second floor, so we could only see the ocean thru the palm trees, but it was still a very valuable upgrade! Marina view would not have been a fraction of the view, since it's basically the marina on the other side of the marketplace. The resort grounds are quite nice, well kept, and comfortable. The beach is exceptional. Clean, not crowded, and the water is wonderful! The pool area was nice, but the water didn't feel very clean (lots of "floaters" on the surface). The concrete around the pool is very hot, wear shoes always!! The hotel staff was hit or miss. Some were very friendly (mostly the men) and many were rude/not friendly. Like you were inconveniencing them at all times. Housekeeping was very attentive, in fact they do random "room checks" several times a day, so lock your door unless you want them just walking in. We had to request linens and toilet paper, as they didn't stock well some days. The power went out several times while we were there. Got quite sticky with no a/c, that's for sure. There are no easy access stairs, FYI. Even if you preferred to use them over the elevator. We were directed to the stairs during one power outage and they were not lit at all and dumped us out in the back of the hotel. Flavored coffee at the hotel cafe is small (considered large) and will cost you $6. The breakfast buffet is really good, many options. The Junkanoo "band" was one of my favorite things, but we only saw them entertain twice. We would have liked a lot more musical events. The daily "activities" are along the lines of bean bag toss and bead bracelet making. The heat/humidity was high most of the time, so it drove us inside a lot (no fault to the resort of course) so it would have been nice if there were more indoor options (probably how they drive you to the casino, which we did a lot of). Overall it was a good place to sit back, relax, and eat a lot. But not the place to be if you want to be entertained. Not once did I hear a steel drum, which is what I really wanted to hear. (we read a lot about being careful leaving the resort area, so we never went further than the maybe there is entertainment elsewhere, but not at Grand Lucayan)

2nd floor ovine view Wish there was more of this, or similar

What's to Love

Location, location, location! That beach out the back of the resort stretches forever - breezy beach walks are gonna rule.

Drink up all the water you want because it's safe to guzzle down. The Bahamas has an insanely awesome filtration process - it soaks through trees, then through a layer of limestone to create refreshing and safe water - and lots of it.

Gelato at Plantation Cafe - really, no explaining needed.

Spiffy up at the spa where you can get your nails done and your hair coiffed - perfect for a night out on the town or if you just want to rock your vacation photos.

Keep up with your buff self at the on-site gym complete with free weights, cardio machines, yoga, spin and a steam and sauna room.

You can play a round of golf at one of the "Top 100" golf courses - talk about bragging rights!

If tennis is more your thing, there are lots of lessons you can sign up for to sharpen your skills.

What We'd Change

Although all rooms have a balcony or a patio, we definitely recommend upgrading to an ocean view room. Waking up to early morning, Caribbean-blue waves lapping white sands is so worth it!

Why You Should Go

A short 20 minutes from the airport and the even better part - Port Lucayan Marketplace is across the street.

You'll find local restaurants, bars, lots of shops - even a pretzel shop (yes, please!) If you're looking for a little nightlife, then this is also the place to be.

Agave Lucaya - the popular local favorite Tex-Mex restaurant is located at the Marketplace and serves up $2 margaritas every Tuesday.

Theme nights throughout the week keep it groovin' - Fish Fry on Wednesday, Outdoor Movies on Thursday, Beach Olympics on Monday, Ladies Night on Friday (holla!)

Explore in and around Bahamas - you can rent a bike or take in a tour or two - lots of colorful history here and sea life you'll want to meet - check out Gold Rock Point to see exquisite corals, brightly hued fish and underwater caves.
