Terrible resort
This resort is at best a two star. The check in experience was mayhem. Upon arrival, well after the 3 pm check in, we were told our room was not ready. We were told it would be ready in another 20 minutes. Seemingly scripted, another employee attempted to have us consider becoming a club member. We declined interest and immediately the check in staff called us over saying our room was ready (not even 5 minutes into the supposed 20 minute wait). Next on to the room. We were located in building 3, near the adults only pool. As others have reviewed, the noise from the tiled hallways and concrete makes the noise incredible. Also as noted by others, the room was dated and institutional. Frigid AC which could not be adjusted by the thermostat. The staff told us that it takes up 30 minutes to adjust to a higher temperature. All three rooms we occupied had the same issue and the AC could not be adjusted. In room amenities were non-existent. An empty fridge, no tissue, no glasses, etc. one of our rooms got tissue after complaint. We called the front desk who told us they do not supply tissue. We indicated that one room in our party received tissue. The staff said that they must be club members. They are not and when we told the staff member this they repeated they do not provide tissue. A one star resort or hotel even provides this basic amenity. Wi-Fi is not equipped to handle the total number of guests. It barely worked. Upon inquiring why the staff said that the buildings were hurricane proof and don’t get Wi-Fi. Yet another lie by the staff. WiFi is strong when people are not in their rooms. It is non-existent when people are back at night. One has to get water from a fountain in the building hallway which is fine. What makes it not fine is that the cleaning staff fill their cleaning pails at the same fountain. Staff are at a one star level. They lie to get rid of you, rush you at meals. Beach is nice. Adult pool with about 30 lounge chairs only is nice. Food is awful. If you have been to a resort that you were satisfied with, don’t come to this one. It is the worst resort we have ever stayed at. Stay away.

Viva Maya - Rip-Off Policy-Traveler's be aware!!!
I made a single reservation for myself, which cost $1,024 for 5 days, but I asked for two double beds as my son might be joining me. When my son said he was going to join me, I attempted to change the reservation as the cost for two was the same as the cost for one, but as all rooms were booked the agent at Wyndham said that the hotel would charge me a little extra for his food as he was staying in my already booked room. Unfortunately, when my son arrived, they charged him $1,200 as that was their policy for additional guests staying in the same room. I tried all week to get a refund, which spoiled my vacation. The hotel on the last day did refund $289 of the $1,200, which still was a rip-off. After I posted a description of this rip-off, the hotel manager, agreed to refund and additional $727.99, but that was on December 5th, and the $727.99 has NOT been refunded. Google tells me that As I made the initial reservations and attempted changes through Wyndham US that I can take Wyndham to small claims court. This has been a pain from start to finish and as this rip-off policy is the resort's policy, I can only assume that I am not the first one to be ripped off, so beware!!

Some up and some down
As I am on the plane traveling home from a week at Viva Maya, I am reflecting, deciding if I should post the whole truth, or edit my review to reflect the tail end. The week began terribly. Upon arrival, inspite of a generous tip at the front, we we sent to spend the week in a dark, damp room (2373) with almost no light and a view of only dense tree tops, through a small, single cut out in the wall off our balcony. This being my second time at Viva Maya, I was disappointed, but I understood that someone had to get the less desirable room and so accepted my fate. My previous room had been splendid, prompting my return 3 years latter. The room itself appeared clean, so we decided to make the best of it and unpacked. I then completed the mandatory bed bug check. I was shocked and disgusted to find dark discoloration on ALL the seems on both mattresses, indicating either a (previous or current) infestation of bed bugs or current mold!! I was horrified!!! How could a hotel so focused on selling VIP memberships possibly expect anyone to buy in under these horrible conditions!! If this was so easy for me to find there is absolutely no way the maids would not have known. We headed straight down to the front desk and told Miguel at the front about the issue, showing the pictures I have attached. Miguel was rude, but gave us a 1 time use card to go check out a different room. We found the next room to be clean and the beds to be free from stains so we went back to the front to accept the room. We were acknowledge, then ignored for about 15 minutes. Feeling uneasy with our clothes and luggage being in the first room, I left my partner to deal with the front desk, while I went back and repacked, dragging all of our luggage by myself to the second room. Around 20 minutes latter, my partner met me at the 2nd room with the new keys. He told me how he had been ignored, while others who came after him were served, and then he was treated rudely by Miguel, when he inquired why he was being ignored. Once we had unpacked again, we went back to the front to return the original rooms keys. The supervisor was now at the front desk and suddenly Miguel was kind and considerate. (Odd...considering how rude he was before.) It was a terrible way to start our vacation!! I expect better!!! Credit where it's due, the rest of our time at Viva Maya was excellent! The food at the buffet and the Mexican and Italian restaurants was fantastic! The bar service was top notch, inspite of the sometimes large crowds. The entertainment was outstanding! Some of the best we have seen. The resort is, overall well maintained!! I can now understand both the 5 star reviews and the 1 star reviews. If we would have stayed in that first room I am certain it would have ruined our vacation.

Fun in the Sun with my fav one!
My mom and I traveled there for 1 week to spend some quality time together in the sun. The resort staff are amazing, They are continually encouraging you to participate in activities and truly love what they do. Almost everday we did a yoga class at 930am with an instructor from NRG2GO. The instructors travel in from all over and offer classes throughout the day, yoga, stretching, aqua, you name it. The instructor was so kind and approachable and made sure that everybody was able to follow along in the class and felt welcomed. At the beach, there was also daily movement, sometimes it was stretching and even dynamic warm ups with fun upbeat music. What we loved most was that all of it can be accessed through an app where you can see everything happening and just jump in. The food choices are amazing. Mayan coffee was a fav hang out. Thank you viva maya for a great week away !!!
