Good, wouldn’t consider it 5 star
We checked in on January 2 after a roughly 1 hour and 15 minute drive from Cancun airport. We arrived around 1:00 p.m., and as expected, our room was not yet ready. Unfortunately, the check-in process was long and frustrating due to a very persistent sales pitch for their “Legendary” program. After declining five or six times, they finally backed off. Our host, Janet, escorted us to the 20.87 Restaurant so we could have lunch while we waited. Sadly, this did not improve our first impression of the resort. The restaurant had an overwhelming odour, a mix of sewage, mold, and mildew. Despite being quite hungry, the smell was difficult to ignore, and the food itself was just ok. Our room became available at 3:00 p.m. in Building 6. The location was convenient, close to both pools and restaurants. However, upon entering the room, we noticed the same unpleasant odour. We later realized our room was almost directly above the 20.87 Restaurant, which likely explains the issue, but could also be a HVAC or plumbing issue. Although the room had a scent diffuser and we kept the balcony door open to help, the smell lingered. We were told during booking that we could select our exact room prior to arrival, but this clearly was not honoured, so I wouldn’t recommend relying on that option. That said, the room itself was quite nice. We stayed in an Alcoba Tropical View room, and the design was modern and well laid out. The bed was comfortable, and the space felt inviting. The main downside was the patio furniture. Thin cushions on a wooden bench made it uncomfortable for extended use. In general, much of the seating around the resort seems to prioritize aesthetics over comfort. Many chairs and couches are very low to the ground, which could be challenging for taller guests or those with knee issues. The beach was one of the highlights of our stay. It was beautiful, with stunning sunrises, minimal seaweed, and plenty of loungers and shaded areas. While there were a few vendors walking along the shoreline, they were not overly intrusive. We spent most of our pool time at the main 20.87 pool and absolutely loved it. The water temperature was perfect, cooler than La Unica and warmer than La Escondida, and very refreshing. The daytime vibe was lively and fun, especially on pool party days with a live DJ and pool floaties. While you do need to wake up early to secure prime chairs, we didn’t mind. The loungers were very comfortable, with lots of shade available. All of the pool servers were fantastic, but Alberto, Lucia, and Ricardo truly stood out for their exceptional service. We had breakfast at the buffet each morning. The coffee and juices were fresh, and Astrid consistently provided outstanding service. While the food was good, the lingering odour was unfortunately still noticeable. For dinner, we tried all of the specialty restaurants and made our reservations prior to arrival. Our top three were Cueva Siete (Mexican), Mi Carisa (Mediterranean), and Mura House (Asian). Each restaurant delivered well-executed dishes and creative, delicious cocktails. The service was excellent overall, with Flavio (Mi Carisa) and Jorge (Cueva Siete) standing out. They alone would make us want to return. We also used our $1,000 in resort credits at the spa, booking massages and the hydrotherapy circuit. The experience was excellent from start to finish, and the facilities were impressive. The only downside was the mandatory 35% service fee, which means the credits don’t fully cover the cost. Areas for improvement: * Add some form of evening entertainment or shows * Provide a beach bag in the room for guest use * Add comfortable seating on balconies * Offer wine on room service, mini bar and poolside menus. Overall, we had a nice vacation and enjoyed many aspects of the resort. We would consider returning, but only if we could stay in a room on the opposite side of the property, away from the odour issues.

Incredible, 10/10 hotel
Where do I even start, Unico 2087 has to be one of, if not, the best hotel we have stayed in! From the moment we arrived we were treated like royalty, they sat us in the lobby with a cocktail whilst the reception team came to us to check in. All the the lovely little details, the service levels and atmosphere were beautiful. Each guest is allocated a concerige (local host), our wonderful host, Fernando, went above and beyond to make our stay magical, everything was perfect. We stayed in the Estancia SuiteTropical View, it was a huge two room suite, with a bedroom, lounge, large ensuite and separate toilet. The lounge area was huge and both rooms lead on too a beautiful veranda with a day bed, seating area and whirlpool tub. The room was really clean and was cleaned daily, with a nightly turn down service and we often opted for the aromatherapy setup. The room has all the essentials from toiletries to robes, coffee machine and snacks and drinks (topped up daily). Our first day was New Year’s Eve, and they hosted a spectacular dinner and party which was a lovely surprise (no additional charges). The hotel itself is not massive, which we loved, but it lacked for nothing. Three lovely pools, poolside and swim up bars, lovely lobby bar and a deco lounge which often had different events on. The restaurants were honestly Michelin quality, there are five al a carte (Japanese, which also offered Japanese hibachi, Mexican, Italian, Grille and French). The grille restaurant 2087 is where you also have a buffet style breakfast and a few times a week buffet lunch (otherwise it is also al a carte). Our favourite was the French, the beef Wellington is a must! The staff across the board were phenomenal, helpful, polite and couldn’t do more to make our stay perfect. We booked all of our day trips and excursions via our local host which made it really hassle free and always included hotel pick up/drop off. We had a few massages and I had a few blow dries in the spa and beauty area, and my partner used the gym each day, all of this was 10/10! Location is lovely too, right on the beach surrounded by jungle, though it is an hour twenty mins or so from cancun / airport etc. I honestly could not fault this hotel for anything, we had the most amazing trip and will definitely be coming back!

Lovely resort, amazing food!
This was our first trip away from our kids in almost 10 years. It was important that it be worth the expense for us. Cons: Location: The hotel is a bit of a drive from the airport. We spent about an hour and a half one way in transit, but our drivers were lovely and happy to chat about the area and amenities. This area is worth it, you just need to plan for the additional travel time. Check-in: After traveling, they take your luggage, sit you down and send multiple people to speak with you before you can go to your room to rest and wash off the travel. The process felt like they were making you agree to a time-share presentation before they showed you to your room. If we were repeat guests, a time share presentation could make sense, but this was our first time to this resort. All of this was a major turn-off for us. Dining: You are advised to confirm dinner reservations upon arrival. On our first visit, we really weren't prepared to lock in on times or specific locations. That being said, we picked randomly and most of our choices were fantastic. It was lovely to have the reservations so we never waited for a table but we ended up feeling rushed to dinner because we didn't really know what the day's schedule would look like. The Room: It is a pretty room and they offer custom drinks on arrival that were amazing. We were a little disappointed to learn that the in room drinks never get replaced and aren't available anywhere else. Housekeeping did great overall but we never took our shoes off in the room because the first day in our room all of our floors were slippery and for the rest they were sticky. Also, the coffee machine in our room never actually made a full cup of coffee. We just reported those issues in checkout. Bonus, the coffee shop in the lobby makes incredible coffee so we were never missing out. Critters: You are in a coastal jungle area. They are the cutest animals and not something we had seen before so it was delightful to see all the different critters. They never got too close or seemed to bother guests. However, they know to stay close because there's food...at night, animals were out checking for food in the outdoor areas and making more noise than other guests ever could. Definitely bring earplugs for sleep. Pros: Resort: It is beautiful. The on-site activities were nice and open for wandering in and out. They had plenty of excursions/activities we didn't even have time to check out. Staff: The overall kindness of every member of the staff. We live in a major US city, people are never as nice as they were here. We couldn't remember a single trip where the people were as wonderful as the staff at Unico were. They were all so friendly and refreshingly positive. Food: Everything we ate was delicious and fresh. We struggled with all the options because we didn't have enough time to really try all the places available. On-site photographer: We are so glad he was able to fit us in. We received beautiful photos of our time at the resort. Shops and Maker's Market: We loved having all the stores to wander through for gifts last-minute items. The local artist exhibit was beautiful to walk through and we really loved that much of the art seemed to be sold by staff and their families. We were overall happy with our stay. If we book another resort, we would happily consider the Unico brand locations for our next trip.
