Fun things to do when not soaking up the sun!

The staff for crafts - Sandra, Daniel and Nataly, are welcoming and helpful. It is a pleasant change of pace to participate in craft projects during a long stay at the resort.

    Good Bones but needs work

I've traveled to many many resorts in Mexico. This was my second time in PV and this reinforced the fact that PV is my favorite Mexican beach town far and away. But this review isn't about PV it's about Unico. First of all - just know it's SMALL. Not a big deal and I was actually looking forward to that versus a lot of the larger resorts I've been to. The views of the sunset are amazing but then again it's PV and that's to be expected. Gym was small but well equipped for the size of the resort. I didn't do anything at the Spa but I heard good things about it. But frankly, with the prices, it was much cheaper to go up the beach a bit and get a massage for $40 for a one hour massage actually on the beach! My real problem was with the service (or lack thereof). We had Eduardo and Carlos as our concierges (we were a large group) and they were phenomenal - always checking in and making sure things were okay. The problem? They couldn't bring drinks, cook food, serve meals etc. Staffing seemed to be a major issue. Drinks never arrived before the meals despite being ordered well before the meal, the staff was frantic and clearly overworked. It seemed like most restaurants had maybe 3-4 staff working and the kitchens also seemed overburdened. Looking around the resort it felt like there was enough staff they just didn't seem to be deployed properly. Case in point the Coffee bar often had 3 staff and the lobby bar 2-3 staff during the day when most people were at the pool. But the pool bar? 1 bartender. There also seemed to be an overstaffing in the "administrative" areas up front while the bars and restaurants suffered. The staff that was covering the beach and pool area not only had to take orders but I often saw them making the drinks as well because there weren't enough bartenders. The food overall was good not great. There were a few exceptions. Also note that the portion sizes overall were very small so order extras. I'd say our favorite was Mexican then Italian and then Japanese. Maybe I've just become jaded because of previous trips and resort quality but this was a major disappointment. In addition a large portion of our group ended up with GI issues - I've traveled in Mexico enough to know not to brush your teeth with the water and take other precautions but I was bedridden my last night with severe abdominal pain and chills. There were a number of times I saw staff handling food without gloves (and no sink nearby) and also observed staff eating from food trays in plain sight. To Unico Management - you have a great resort that just needs some more oversight. 3.5/5.0 stars for me - but I gave it a 3 because if I'm rounding on this one, I'm rounding down.

Great Hotel & great people! Food okay

Overall our experience was amazing! the hotel is brand new so the rooms were so clean, had everything we needed, and cleaned / mini bar refreshed daily. The spa and the gym were both 10/10. We did the hydrotherapy experience which was very unique and fun to do as a couple! Everyone at the hotel was so nice as well, everyone that helped us at the lower pool were so kind and attentive, and Rafael at the rooftop bar was amazing to us our entire stay, even remembered us when we were leaving on our last day despite having been off the day before! Eduardo Bravo who was our Local Host was incredible, answering every random request I had so quickly and had great recommendations. Only reason for 4 stars was the food was okay, which I feel like is normal for an all inclusive, but I had higher hopes based on the reviews I had seen & that it’s a smaller hotel. But overall we had a great stay!!!!

Great food and service, relaxing atmosphere

I've stayed at 6 different resorts in Puerto Vallarta and Unico has the best food (with Secrets in second place). The service is great, and requests to modify menu items were always accepted without hesitation. It would be nice if there was a second breakfast option, as there was a line to be seated on 2 days of our stay. The resort is beautiful and clean. The balcony views are great, especially when the whales are active. The two beds in the double rooms are truly king size which is great and rare. We interacted with so many great staff members, here's a list of the most memorable. Gissel works her butt off at the pool every day and always brings a great attitude. She helped me practice my minimal Spanish and took great care of our food and drink requests. Betza covered our section on Gissel's day off and remembered our names 2 days later, impressive! Rudolfo made us smile every morning at breakfast and always remembered us and said hello while delivering lunch around the pool. Nataly brings high energy to water aerobics and made it fun. Eduardo was our local host. We don't ask for a lot but he always responded very quickly with dinner reservations and came to check in on us by the pool. I would enjoy adding some entertainment in the evenings, like dancers or a fire show, but there are multiple tables which can be used for playing cards which we did a couple nights. Overall I definitely recommend and would return to this resort.

    Great first time stay

We had an amazing first time experience here. As a new resort it is a gorgeous place to stay. Eduardo Bravo really helped make it a great stay with personal concierge service. The staff are all great.
