Transactional - not hospitable - and completely insulting lack of care for our honeymoon

As avid travelers and Marriott Platinum members, we chose The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas for our honeymoon expecting a level of service and experience that matched both the Westin brand and the nightly rate, which exceeded $700 value nightly. Unfortunately, our stay fell far short of expectations and ultimately felt more transactional than hospitable. From the start, the experience lacked the warmth and attentiveness that should define a Hawaiian resort. Despite noting our honeymoon and Platinum status in our reservation, and having many emails exchanged with the concierge team prior to arrival, there was no welcome amenity or even a meaningful acknowledgment note upon arrival. Our emails with questions about the resort and area stopped being replied to before our arrival, despite follow ups! Our only positive recognition was a room upgrade, which comes standard with our platinum status, and which we appreciated, but it did little to offset the overall lack of personalized service. It didn’t feel like we got the upgrade because of our honeymoon and that felt like a special slap in the face. Operationally, several moments stood out for the wrong reasons. Within minutes of leaving our beach chairs to visit the pool bar roughly 25 feet away, a note was placed on our chairs indicating they could be cleared within an hour. To be specific, we went to the bar at 10:02 and the note was left on our chair at 10:09 while we waited for our food to be made. We are within view of our seats and spending $100+ on your food and drinks. It felt unnecessarily rigid, insulting and indicative of a resort prioritizing cheap profit focused rules over guest experience. A complete cheating on the concept of hospitality. Then in the reverse, other good policies were completely ignored. The adults-only pool was frequently used by children while staff remained disengaged, and the mothers of these children was even vaping openly without intervention. A complete mismatch of the clientele we would expect to be surrounded by at a Westin. For a resort positioning itself at this price point, the lack of enforcement of basic policies was surprising, and then the insulting warning of a paying guest for an unnecessary policy just completely broke my impression of this place. The cultural experience of Hawai’i also felt diluted. We were welcomed with inexpensive shell leis rather than traditional flower leis, which contributed to the sense that the property has shifted toward a more corporate, standardized atmosphere and away from the authentic spirit of Hawai‘i. I am sad for anyone that doesn’t get to visit as often as us, that this is their experience. This is not how Hawai’i should be experienced. Service breakdowns extended beyond the physical property. The off-site concierge team provided poor pre-arrival support, and our “priority” email did not arrive until the day after we checked in, making it impossible to take advantage of the advertised discounted dining offers the first evening. When we asked concerige about a correction to our bill, they sent us to the front desk, who then, physically laughed and said we had to go back to concerige and make them do it. No one wanted to take responsibility or fix the problem. Another indicator of a hotel that is more about profits and standards than hospitality and with employees lacking genuine care and passion for their guests. Additionally, the resort lacked a variety of on-site activities or meaningful programming that might justify the premium pricing or enhance the overall stay. With no beach yoga or fresh flower lei making (they only had dry flower leis) it was a disappointment. In short, while the room itself was good with a good view, the broader experience felt impersonal and underwhelming for the price. We have received more attentive service at lower-tier Marriott properties, or other Westin’s, which made the disconnect even more noticeable. At this price point, there are other Maui resorts that offer both elevated service and a stronger sense of place. For travelers deciding where to invest in a special trip or milestone celebration, we would recommend considering the Wailea Beach Resort which we have loved in years past where guests feel genuinely welcomed, seen, and cared for.

    Paradise with issues...

First off, the Resort is a wonderful little Maui Hawaiian paradise. The grounds, with multiple pools (one for kiddies) and the landscaping are superb. The resort has a spectacular Luau-- said to be the best on the Island. There are a few surprising issues, however, which are annoying. One, the lack of a real room service-- with the food more like hospital cafeteria fare than a four star hotel. We ordered a pancake breakfast-- it arrived in a fast food foam box, with three cold pancakes, no butter, and clearly high fructose 'maple syrup.'The odd thing is that the pool side (drab) food was also delivered in the fast food boxes. The second big issue is the beds-- the mattress was so soft that it was difficult to get out of bed-- and gave us back aches. One other note--the prices for everything from $3 bottled water to $300 massages and facials--are what you expect. However, shop around for deals on rooms and packages--the prices vary widely. We suffered pool side as another couple told us (like a TV commercial) that they'd paid a couple thousand dollars less than us with a package deal from Costco! However, even all of the above, it is a wonderful get away to a spot of paradise.

    Beautiful weather and scenery!

Wife and I decided to come here on a quick whim. Thank You Bonvoy! Our stay in Maui at the Westin was absolutely unforgettable, with beautiful surroundings, a relaxing atmosphere, and exceptional service throughout. A special thank you to Giadee, whose friendly smile and warm hospitality truly made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. Experiences like hers are why we’re already dreaming about our next visit back to this incredible place. It’s nice to know we can go so far and receive a warm reception where people are all so friendly. 🌴✨

Exceptional property and staff!!! Highly recommend.

This is one of my favorite properties in all of Maui. The staff is amazing, the beach is perfect. Lots of dining options especially because it's right next to Whalers Village outdoor shopping mall. I love that beach tower AKA whole Hokupaa experience. If you stay in this Tower you get daily breakfast and full access to the private Lanai with the beautiful cocktail pool. Full bar and cool activities daily with nightly hors d'oebs and dessert. The views are better and it's worth the upgrade in my opinion. I've been coming here since 2020. All of this staff is absolutely amazing, so many cool animals from the fish to the flamingos to the parrots on the property. They let you feed the fish every morning around 9:30 or 10:00 a.m. It has fun water slides for the kids and adults. The one thing I wish it did have was a swim aqua bar. Beautiful waterfalls and lots of activities on site. Throw a rock distance from the famous Black Rock. Lots of sea turtles and snorkeling. The catamarans pull up right in front of the resort for daily activities from whale watching to sunset cruises. This place really has it all, other than a kids club. I really wish there was a kids club for some adult time that was complimentary especially considering the price. Part of why I started going to four seasons maui was the kids club. Overall this is a beautiful pristine property in one of the best locations in all of Maui. Highly recommend.

Just a shoutout to the manager, Gianna (sp) and Matthew in Amenities for arranging a welcoming gift of Prosecco and a little cake for my brother’s 75th birthday. Thanks to both of you!
