The trip that will not happen.
The Sands is a great place but some units need some remodeling. I always stay here and I feel right at home. But if you are planing a trip beware of the new rules due to COVID-19. You must have a COVID-19 negative test result done within 72 hours prior to arrival. In the US, it’s impossible to get results that quickly. In addition, you must have insurance that will cover a COVID-19 extraction from the island. Then you must fill out a Heath questionnaire before arrival. They call it TCI ASSURED. I had reservations for 7/26–8/3. Return flight was cancelled recently. So make sure you get insurance and can get your money back. Sadly, I was forced to cancel for all those reasons mentioned above . The Sands has waved any cancellations fees and will refund me the deposit amount. Thanks ! I will return once this plague is over and enjoy the Sands and the most beautiful beach in the world: Grace Bay!
Great beach and location...but DO NOT book the studio!
We booked the studio suite after seeing the photos on the website. Much to our surprise, the room was so run down and the bathroom was disgusting, The furniture was chipped and/ or broken. Not what we expected at al for $500 a night. We requested to change the room but the hotel was fully occupied. They informed us that the units are privately owned so some are renovated and some are not. We met another couple that was in a studio and had the same experience. If it was renovated, the size and layout of the room is perfect for a couple. Our friends were in a one bedroom and it was very nice. The beach is fabulous and having a restaurant on the beach was great!
Third times a charm
We stayed the week before the island shut down due to COVID-19. We had an oceanfront suite and were in building 3 on the 3rd floor. Upon arrival they had a bottle of champagne waiting for our anniversary. The room had a nice patio with awesome oceanfront views. We had a king bed and the room was attached to a one bedroom oceanfront deluxe that we were able to tour. We will definitely stay in that room if available for our next visit. Housekeeping services were excellent. The staff was friendly and beach staff attentive. I would say it was only 30-40% occupied which was eerie. The Tuesday manager reception was on St. Patrick’s Day. They even had green beer and necklaces. By our last day the beach was deserted. But beautiful. We ate at Hemingway’s a few times and it was good each time. We only went to town once because we were trying to social distance. Our friends did bike to town a few times and they replaced old bikes with new which was greatly needed. We ate at Bay Bistro and the Somerset as well. Both very good and restaurants empty. We enjoyed our annual visit but it would have been more enjoyable without the worry of the pandemic. We will be back!
a pleasant surprise
first time to Turcs and Caicos and very pleased. Read reviews on The Sands and had mixed feelings about staying there . I am not sure who writes such negative reviews. The place was beautiful. Beach was gorgeous, water picture perfect. Staff at Check- in were friendly, courteous , and professional ( Special thanks to Yudelka for printing boarding passes). We had a 1 bedroom condo ( # 2301) set back from beach with a partial ocean view, full kitchen, screened in porch, king size bed ,very clean. Housekeeper was fantastic. The Sands had many complimentary services/ amenities i.e., fitness center, bicycles free for use, kayaks, paddle boards, snorkeling gear, pool/beach towels, beach palapas ( beach attendant Eddie was the best), heated pool. Hemingway's restaurant ( not operated by resort) on the premises. Food was good ,but pricey. The Sands is located within walking distance to town where there are many restaurant options. Recommend Caicos Cafe, Shay Cafe , Bay Bistro ( on beach next door to the Sands), Cocovan ( food truck). Food/drink prices in Providenciales pricey. Purchased groceries /beer/wine at IGA store . Box of Frosted Flakes was $8.99.. Taxis are readily available but we were charged a different price every time. "Nick of Time" taxi charged us $30 for trip to airport ( about a 20 minute ride)...try someone else. The Sands has sister resorts ( Palms and Shore Club) which you can visit. We enjoyed our stay at The Sands and we will return.
We loved our visit to the sands in mid March! When we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff and rum punch. We had originally booked a courtyard view room and quickly realized that was not the right decision. The courtyard rooms are very small with only 2 windows that overlook a hallway. They are small and cramped and do not feel like you are on a tropical vacation. I was very disappointed so we had the front desk change us to a garden view which was MUCH better. We had a little patio which we sat on every night. Well worth the up charge! Overall the sands was lovely! The beach was beautiful! We made friends with the beach attendant and tipped him to save us front ocean beach chairs for every morning of our stay. The garden and landscape around the resort was absolutely beautiful. You are within walking distance to all the neighboring resorts and their restaurants as well as the little downtown area which has a ton of great restaurants and cafes. The location was PERFECT! We used the hotel provided bikes and would bike into town in the morning for coffee/snacks. Hemingway’s was also delicious and so nice to have as an option right on the property! Overall we loved our stay at the sands! As a couple in our late 20s looking for a nice vacation without completely breaking the bank this really was perfect.
