Disappointment at Sunscape Coco Punta Cana – end of June-beginning of July

The Good: - **Well-Planned Premises:** The resort grounds are spacious and thoughtfully laid out, making it easy to get around. - **Beautiful Beachfront:** The beach itself is stunning, with soft, powdery white sand and plenty of shaded areas to relax. - **Friendly Staff:** The employees are the highlight of the resort—always smiling, helpful, and genuinely trying to make guests feel welcome, even if English is not widely spoken. - **Nightly Entertainment:** There are shows every evening, which add a lively atmosphere, though some are better than others. - **Food Variety in Sun Club:** The Kaleidoscope buffet (for Sun Club members) offers decent protein options at every meal, including fish, meat, omelettes, pancakes, and waffles. The food is edible and mostly safe, though not particularly exciting. I mostly ate grilled fish and meats. Fruits were great especially the passion fruit, pineapple and mangoes. - **Family-Friendly:** Lots of activities for kids and families, with multiple pools and entertainment options throughout the day. I don’t have young kids but if I had, I’d think twice about letting them in the pools though. (See below points) The Not-So-Good (a.k.a. The Terrible): - **Check-In & Arrival:** Check-in was extremely slow (over an hour), and the airport shuttle also involved long waits, making arrival stressful and time-consuming. - **Room Issues:** The first room was very dirty, and even after upgrading to Sun Club, the room was only marginally better. Storage is minimal—no drawers and a very small closet—so you’ll be living out of your suitcase. Maintenance issues included slow-draining sinks, weak toilet flushes, and repeated problems with the room key card, leading to long waits for repairs. - **Pools:** All pools are shallow, crowded, and not always clean. During sargassum season, with the ocean unswimmable, this is a big drawback. Pools showed signs of needing repair and sometimes had oily residue in the mornings. - **Ocean & Beach Access:** While the beach looks beautiful, the ocean was unswimmable due to sargassum and a strong, unpleasant smell that lingered throughout the resort. The water was murky and uninviting, so swimming was not an option during our stay. - **Buffet & Food:** Food is repetitive and fairly bland. The only brewed coffee is at breakfast; elsewhere, it’s all from espresso machines. Tea options are poor, so bring your own if you’re particular. We hoped to eat some shrimps at the buffet but none served during our stay. Specialty restaurants were difficult to book and disappointing in quality—Bluewater Grill, in particular, was a letdown, serving chewy, undercooked meat and recycled buffet food. - **Crowds & Noise:** Finding chairs at popular shows or by the pool is tough, especially on weekends. Sun Club pools and lounges are crowded and noisy, as access isn’t well controlled. - **Limited Walking:** The beach is separated from other hotels by jungle, so you can’t easily walk to explore other resorts or find better swimming spots. - **On-Site Store:** Resort shops are very expensive, and stores just outside the resort also overcharge. Best to do your shopping at the airport on your way home. **Overall:** Sunscape Coco Punta Cana was a deeply disappointing experience. Between the painfully slow check-in, poorly maintained and cramped rooms, repetitive and bland food, and the unusable, foul-smelling ocean, this hotel failed to meet even basic expectations. Lack of access to the ocean (there were maybe 2-3 brave souls swimming in the sea at any given time) leads people to flock to the pools naturally. The overcrowded, unappealing, dirty looking and shallow pools offered no real alternative for swimming during sargassum season, and the beach, while visually nice, was unusable for anything beyond sitting on the sand if you could withstand the smell. The big crowds, lack of proper access control to exclusive areas, and frustrating restaurant reservation system only added to the dissatisfaction. If I had known about these issues beforehand, I would never have chosen this hotel. I cannot recommend Sunscape Coco Punta Cana to anyone looking for a relaxing, enjoyable, or hassle-free vacation.

    Better than expected

After visiting Sunscape coco last year, we were slightly dissatisfied with the removal of the adults only sunclub as we upgraded to this last year. We were not aware of this until we checked in. The check in process was awful as well due to having to wait in a queue for nearly one hour But having spoken to several holiday guests I could this time was good compared to the 2- 3 hours the waited to check in. The app for the al a carte restaurants was temperamental which led to huge queues at 09.00 to make a manual reservation in either the heat or torrential rain. Having said that if your prepared to continuously try on the app you can get a reservation The staff in kaleidoscope buffet restaurant were amazing with always a smile and helpful Bar staff varied from brilliant to can’t be arsed. Big shout out to the entertainment team especially the fabulous Nicky Minaj who was brilliant at stretchy yoga on the beach as well as bingo and the craft sessions. Pineapple was great at teaching Spanish to us too. Both had so much energy and always smiled. Thank you Overall the food was good the alcohol was premium and room was spotless thanks to our maid.

    Enjoyable holiday

At first we was sceptical about our visit, based on other reviews, but this was a great place for us as a family of 5, with 3 small children age 10,6,4 Who had a fantastic time. If you are looking for a quiet holiday then mabe this isn't the place for you, night life and entertainment can be heard from your room, loud music which we loved and enjoyed. Staff friendly, food was good, only down side was the a la carte was not easy to get a table. Weather wise don't go off the weather apps because it was great wether (roasting) , showers last for 20mins during the day then the sun is blazing again. 1st time leaving a review after any holiday. Overall we had a great time.

False Advertising - Get prepared for the additional costs

False advertisement of it being all inclusive, even though you attempt to make a reservation at 08:55am it is almost impossible with the demand of people in the hotel that your able to get reservations, the App never worked and when we went to the information desk on the final night she had to manually add the reservation, unless you upgrade and become a sunclub member, again another form of having to pay extra on top of what you have already paid. The food at the all inclusive without reservation was disgusting we stuck to the same food daily to be safe which was freshly made pasta and pizza, two days we had finished our food at windows even with the waiters coming over and asking us what drinks we had wanted but because of how busy they were they never came back with drinks, when approaching the bar for drinks they would ask you to wait until a waiter takes your order, at this point we'd finished all our food and left to go to another bar to get drinks, reported the issue to Kelvin (Windows manager) who told us to go back to him and hell ensure a better experience next time. Lack of organisation when it comes to checking in, no explanation of how things work for example having to findout from others of the opportunities that are within the hotel, stupid idiots standing up in a seated area when it comes to entertainment time, should always announce to people to prepare and get drinks beforehand to prevent distraction or have a different seating set up in which you have circled tables within the area and people can sit in their own groups and move around accordingly to allow people to actually enjoy the entertainment. I would say the entertainment was good and they try their best to get everyone involved and the hotel housekeeping was good.
