Looks great in the pictures...horrible resort
First off…I'm not a review type person. I can count on 1 hand how many times i’ve written a review. I've been consistently vacationing with my family for over 25 years. and have stayed at countless resorts. with that said: by far the worst vacation in my life. Sonesta SXM is a hole. can’t order something without attitude. it’s like every employee is annoyed by your presence. isn’t Sint Maarten supposed to be the “friendly island”??? -kids not on reservation upon arrival -3 days in realized we were overcharged. they tell us yes you’re right. you will see a refund in 5-7 business days. never came. Was corresponding with the same woman we spoke with at the counter the day we discovered the overcharge. After 3 emails finally get a response. long story short…“we don’t know what you’re talking about. Here’s the breakdown and the amount stands.” You’re the one that told me that you overcharged us!! Credit card dispute worked out and we got some of our money back. -overcrowded with a spring break Cancun vibe. People inebriated and stumbling around. -entire resort smells like marijuana -room was overtaken with smell of marijuana every night -majority of food is like eating in a school cafeteria. Only somewhat decent food was at La Fontana. -alcohol is cheap & disgusting charge a little more for quality liquor -dirt and grime under things -shower floods bathroom -AC broke in room and had no AC for last 2 days -no enforcement of their own dress code. People entering restaurants in wet bathing suits. Ended up with wet pants on more than one occasion. -they let our young children sign themselves out of the teen club when were told they cannot do that and we have to be present for them to leave. -no cross contamination precautions IE: poolside burger stand. guy cooking wearing same gloves to handle raw chop meat and burger buns and to assemble burgers. -when visiting local shops and restaurants and they asked where we were staying as soon as you said Sonesta they would get this look on their face. When you told them your experience they would nod in agreement and say they never hear good things. -one positive was the housekeepers were very nice Spend your money somewhere else!

Pick another hotel
Checked in Sunday 11/2. No hot water for 2 days. AC temp in room was uncontrollable - you could turn it off completely or control the fan speed but the temperature was uncontrollable. Food options were good but food quality was poor to average at best. On the plus side, the staff was generally friendly.

Third and probably last time
Well our third anniversary trip to this resort. First time was great second time they have put our room number which they did again this trip. We upgraded to adult floor and I was told I get vip points of 10k but of course they said no when we got there. Room service was not so good my opinion. One night they said they had no cook and kept hanging up on me. So I went down to the front desk funny they got through with no issues. So I ordered but cancelled as didn’t trust the guy I talked to on the phone. We ended up I’ll for the last four days not there fault but killed our trip for sure. Buffet was good as always but no more steak house :( lived cooking my steak on the hot rock. It is worth going if you haven’t been. But I won’t be back and the upgrade to me seemed like a downgrade as could not watch the planes and that’s what it’s all about there. Parrot farm was my favourite this trip. A must do.

Great vacation
What a great place! The people are friendly, the hotel was nice, the amenities were great. Clean. Good food. The price was great too. Also, if you want to do your own guided tour, ask for Angus.
