Beautiful Resort, Broken Promises: A $852 Lesson in Getting Everything in Writing
While the resort itself is beautiful and our initial experience hosting a group of 20 people was great, the way this situation was handled completely overshadowed everything positive. Due to the attack on Venezuela, all flights were canceled and we were forced to extend our stay on the island. At that time, we had a resort credit of $852 on our account. Onicka Williams and Jovanny Smith, both members of front desk management, explicitly told us that this credit could be applied toward the total cost of our extended stay. However, because the Sales Team was out of the office for the weekend, they instructed us to pay the full amount upfront and assured us we would be reimbursed once the Sales Team returned on the following Monday. Since we would already be gone by then, we were told to follow up by email or telephone for the reimbursement. Trusting their guidance, we paid the full total of $942.01, with the understanding that the $852 resort credit would be reimbursed to us. Once we followed up, everything changed. Both Onicka and Jovanny denied ever making that statement, and the hotel is now refusing to honor the reimbursement that was promised. This sudden reversal feels dishonest and extremely unprofessional. What should have been handled with care and support during an emergency turned into a frustrating and unnecessary financial dispute. We brought significant business to this resort with a large group, and it is disheartening to be treated this way after being given direct assurances by management. Integrity and accountability matter in hospitality, and this experience showed a serious lack of both. I strongly advise anyone staying here, especially groups, to get every single financial promise in writing. Verbal assurances clearly hold no value at this property. This is why Sonesta Maho Beach Resort is receiving a one-star rating.

All-inclusive Families Welcome
Amazing location and hospitality. The staff was delightful and we felt welcome. Busy, family-centered hotel close to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Fun nightlife off property and within walking distance or taxi (for adult time).

Unfriendly, condescending staff, noisy, dirty rooms for a lot of money
Incredibly unfriendly, unprofessional staff attitude, especially the front office manager, who we would expect the most - if we are talking about the idiot guest who pays thousands to feel good - then if the guest finds a cockroach in room, or the noise from the landing planes is unbearable in the room, or the bathroom is dirty, or water is flowing from the ceiling when it rains, etc. etc. - then he comes, helps, solves, figures it out any solution - and when they put an extra bed in a 2-bed room instead of a 3-bed room, then in addition to the other tasks, he only wants to deal with the extra charge of several hundred dollars so that we pay for it! Well, we arrived at this hotel as a group of more than twenty people! Everything seemed fine, although they couldn't fulfill a significant part of the conditions promised at the time of booking, but we know that it's not easy to serve the needs of 22 people in a hotel with several hundred rooms for tens of thousands of dollars... However, what started after that was the many small, but daily annoyances that got on our nerves over the course of a week, which would practically be a problem even in a 3* hotel! One of the central hotels in the beautiful St. Maarten, known as the “Friendly Island”, gave up this label, they didn’t want to be friendly, they didn’t want to deal with general daily problems and tasks, moreover, at the end of the vacation, through their own fault, they charged us additional fees - namely, we requested a room for 3 men, in which we asked for 3 separate beds, they thought the boys could sleep together on 2 beds - and when we agreed to add an extra bed, it cost us several hundred dollars, when we had already paid previously the extra fee for it! The fact that there are bugs and spiders in the room, the bathroom is dirty, the restaurant staff is sometimes unfriendly, all of that is dwarfed in the end by the indoctrinating, condescending style of the Front Office Manager! There are much better hotels in the world for this much money, we highly do not recommend this place!

Amazing service from Beautiful Carmelita at Italian restaurant
We had a wonderful experience at the Italian restaurant at Sonesta Maho Beach Resort during Thanksgiving time, at the end of November 2025. The food was great, but what truly made our evening special was the service we received from Carmelita La Fontana. She was incredibly friendly and always greeted our family with a warm smile. Even though we are a big family of nine people, she managed to find us a table very quickly and even made sure we had a beautiful view, which we really appreciated. Carmelita was constantly running around to make sure we had everything we needed and that everyone was comfortable and happy. Her positive attitude, kindness, and attention made our dinner enjoyable and stress-free. Thank you, Carmelita, for taking such great care of our family. You truly made our dining experience memorable! Yanina and Family :)

Great for food allergy accomodation (Celiac Disease)
We stayed at this resort on Christmas holiday vacation, it being my first holiday since being diagnosed with Celiac Disease I was very nervous and apprehensive as it hadn't been a factor when we initially booked the trip. I initially contacted the resort by email about my dietary needs and received very little communication and guidance. I took the leap of faith and went and I am so glad I did. Day one I met this lovely Food & Service superviser named Sharon who took care of me the entire trip. Everyday she took my orders of what I wanted for my meals and when I wanted to come eat as well as any nights we planned on visiting the specialized restaurants on the resort. She would have meals prepared safely by the chef in the back limiting as much cross contamination as possible. I am highly sensitive celiac so I was very nervous about becoming ill, but she promised me I wouldn't get sick from her food. Sure enough I went the entire trip eating these wonderful meals and was not sick once! She even went above and beyond to arrange for me to have lunches to go on days where we had booked excursions. She made it so my biggest stressor on this trip wasn't so stressful anymore and allowed me to enjoy quality meals with my family. I am so beyond grateful for Sharon who stopped me on my first day in the buffet to ask if I was alright and proceeded to take excelent care of me all trip long. She truly went above and beyond and made our whole trip. If you are looking for a place to travel with dietary restrictions I would recommend reaching out to Sonesta and asking to connect with Sharon she is a god sent!
