Lovely resort in beautiful surroundings but a few frustrations

We recently stayed at Secrets Playa Blanca and overall had a great holiday. The hotel itself is very nice, set in stunning, well-kept grounds. Our room was clean and comfortable, fairly standard for a hotel in this area. We didn’t pay for the Preferred Club upgrade, but a lot of facilities are dedicated to it, so it’s probably worth considering for anyone booking. The bars were great with a good vibe throughout, and the swim-up bar at the pool was a real highlight. The main social pool was quite loud, so we preferred spending time at the quieter pool next to the beach. The beach itself was lovely for daily walks until the last day, when there appeared to be a raw sewage leak leaving faeces along the water’s edge – absolutely disgusting. Had that happened earlier in the trip, our view of the resort might have been very different. Drinks were excellent – not the usual watered-down cocktails you find at many Mexican resorts – and most of the staff were brilliant. The only exception was one pool concierge who removed our towels after we’d only been gone 15 minutes, then tried to insist we’d been away much longer. Aside from that, the service everywhere was outstanding. The restaurants were good overall, but the menus lacked the variety we’ve seen in other Mexican and Caribbean hotels. We had an ongoing joke that the “fish of the day” was always either Mahi Mahi or Sea Bass – but whichever it was, it looked and tasted exactly the same! Oceana was a bit of a let-down too: despite being described as a seafood restaurant, it really just offered a few extra fish dishes. The food was decent, though, just not what we expected. The hard sell on bottles of wine was also a bit annoying. One big frustration was the on-site shops. You expect to pay a premium at a resort, but the prices here were ridiculous – for example, a bag of Doritos was $17. That’s pure profiteering and hard to justify. I’d be surprised if many guests bought much from there. On the positive side, the coffee shop was excellent and became part of our daily routine, and the gym was really good – clean, modern and well equipped. All in all, it was a great holiday in a beautiful resort with mostly fantastic staff, good drinks and lovely surroundings. A few frustrations, but overall we had a very enjoyable stay.

    gorgeous resort with amazing staff

we stayed here at this georgeous resort for 14 nights. the resort is stunning, the restaurants and food are very good, but what makes this place special is the staff, they are so friendly and really work hard to make sure you are looked after. We stayed in preferred club and our butlers were Rafa and Eddy and they we great, always making sure we had everything we needed. We spent every day around the preferred pool and were looked after brilliantly by Elais, Angel, celeste, coni, alfonzo and jefferie. Would definately stay here again.

    Birthday Celebration in Paradise

True paradise from the moment we stepped on property. Had never been to Cancun before and Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres did not disappoint. We came here with friends (no kids!) to celebrate my wife's birthday. The amenities were topnotch and the staff was super friendly and ready to serve. Special shout out to our Butler Raul Suazo. Give this resort a 10 out of 10 and would definitely come back. I recommend getting a room with a swim out pool and splurging on the preferred club. Well worth the few extra dollars. Make sure to bring plenty of singles and fives to tip the staff for their fantastic service!

    Beyond Disappointing experience.

Extremely Disappointed and Frustrated. Worst Resort Experience I’ve Ever Had. I spent almost $4,000 for a 3-night stay and another $3,000 on flight for this trip , yet this was by far the worst experience I’ve ever had. I will not stay at another Hyatt property or Hyatt chain resort again. From the very second I arrived, instead of welcoming me, the concierge immediately tried to push a sales presentation on me in exchange for a $200 credit, asking intrusive personal and work-related questions. I came for a relaxing vacation.. NOT to be pitched on memberships or marketing programs. I paid extra for an ocean-view room, but the room they gave me was far from the ocean. Simple items like a beach bag were upcharged ($25) and even a coconut was $15, which is absurd considering the cost of the stay. There were a decent amount of restaurants to choose from and food quality was terrible. The food was overly salty, heavy sauces, and nothing tasted fresh. Room service was equally disappointing. The resort’s Japanese restaurant was impossible to book, even when staff told me to try exactly at midnight through the app. The treatment difference between preferred members and non-members was noticeable. Staff were dismissive, rude and condescending. On multiple occasions, I felt discriminated against as a person of color. The service was terrible, and the lack of respect was very obvious. Overall, this was a terrible experience. It was overpriced, low quality and unwelcoming. I strongly discourage anyone from staying here and I will NOT be returning to any Hyatt property.
