Nearly perfect stay at Secrets Maroma Beach

First time to SMB- would definitely return! Have been looking forward to visit the resort after reading the great reviews. It’s easy to see why the loyal following. Stayed in the Preferred Swim Out Rooms- clean, nice firm bed, couple of varying pillow options. AC works well. Loved the Le Labo Bergamot 22 products! Housekeeping did a great job with twice a day service. Only complaint would be the lack of decent room snacks - had a bag of peanut M&M, local spicy chips and nuts. Restaurants: The Buffet for breakfast was solid but it was being temporarily held out of the ballroom / conference hall while the new restaurant is under construction/renovation. Only ate there the day of arrival because it felt too much like those meals at some big convention. Ate at Bordeaux, El Patio, and Portofino. Portions are large (too much for us) but I can see most Americans enjoying the size of appetizers, soups and entrees. Overall the quality of the food was very good for an AI and there were plenty of food that we enjoyed. We also liked how there were special “pop up” grills during our stay. On Thurs there was a Tuna grill that was quite good. The beach grill on Sat was also great - had paella and grilled fish along with fresh coconuts to have coconut water or coco-loco! Bars: Standard AI bars drinks. Nothing unfortunately stood out for us. Pools: Nice pools. Seating poolside was good but despite efforts by pool attendants early in the morning to “police” against saving loungers, non -existent policing by later morning. Also like the assortment of live music off and on poolside / by the beach Beach: It clearly was beautiful in the past but the Sargassum in July was awful. There were bulldozers there in the morning with trucks /trailers hauling it away Even working til lunch. The odor first in the morning was really strong and bordering on unbearable for some. As a result, didn’t get into the water or stay on the beach other that the day of the grill. Service: The service is what would bring us back. Check-in as pretty efficient - no up selling going on. Servers /bartenders and pool attendants were very friendly and helpful. A shout out to our concierge (Roberto) during our stay. He would check in on us at least once a day and also pointed out special events for the day eg - Tuna grill, beachside grill. Also our pool attendants Ana, Dario were always stopping by to check on whether we needed any drinks and to help clear away empty plates. A few things that kept us from giving the stay a 5 star: our spa attendant seemed disorganized- took us back for the couples massage but said we’d do the hydrotherapy first (but had the wrong time - so we started 15 min late). At least the 80 min we paid for was not shortened. After the massage I was escorted to wait for the hydrotherapy while my wife was sent back to the lobby. Took another 15 min of waiting to get my wife back (since I didn’t have my phone on me to reach her) The use of the vouchers as preferred was very confusing - we were first told that we could use one $40 voucher for each of us with one treatment. And when we checked in for the massage we’re told the same. But when I checked the receipt they only had discounted one voucher. Took some discussion to sort this out. Food wise- wished there was more fresh tropical fruit available eg passionfruit, guava, mango at the restaurants and buffet. Ultimately would give the resort a 4.5 if able. Would definitely return and hope for less seaweed!

    Mom and Daughter Trip

I went with my daughter for her Birthday. We had a perfect time. Roberto was our concierge and was so attentive and helpful. Miguel was our waiter at the pool and was always there with a smile and a drink. The resort was so clean and beautifully maintained. Highly recommended!

Very disappointed will not go again.

This was a disappointing trip. There seem to be many great reviews but our experience did not match that. - Food - bleh... I would give it an average rating. At best 3 out of 5. They sell it like their specialty restaurants are 5 stars. No way. The steak at Oceana was fatty and rubbery and the corn served was rotten. - Buffet breakfast - good variety, omelet station was well managed. The staff at that station was great. The wait staff was very busy and were very slow to get you your drinks. -Service - overall the food and bar service people who work there were the highlight and did a great job. They work hard and were very nice. Bright spots were the people who served drinks at the pool the lobby bar and the cafe. - Bathroom - our shower water was gushing out of the shower onto the floor. We told the hotel. They did nothing. They asked us if we had shut the shower door!!! - Room - when I got up in the morning and went out into the hall which is outdoors and looks ugly, I could smell horrible stench of what seemed like a bathroom pit. They have terrible sewer smells by the building where we stayed. Completely disgusting. - Hard sell - I could not stand the hard sell pitch for us to attend a presentation. We said no but they kept pushing. - Pool - music on July 4th was horrible. Some kind of awful rap music they were blasting non stop. Had to get out of there. - Ziplining - we decided to go to Xplor park for the morning to go ziplining. That was super fun but we ended up spending about $600 to just do that for 3 people. We would have been better off staying at Xcaret as it is free when you stay there. - Xcaret Arte (where we went in January) was much better. Much more upscale. That food was at best a 3.5 out of 5 but it was a much better overall experience. Rooms are nicer, grounds are better, overall better managed. Plus the free parks like Xpor. There are too many better run higher end places to go. We won't be back.

Another Great Visit to Secrets Maroma Beach (Can I Go Back Today???)

We visited Secrets Maroma from 7/22/2025 to 7/31/2025. The trip was booked only a week earlier, and they did not have a swim-out room available, but they did put us in one of the “Penthouse” rooms about the main lobby. The room was great, and we would stay in one again if the swim-out is not available. The stay was great as usual. The resort is undergoing some renovation, but it did not have any real impact on our vacation. Things do need renovation every few years! We enjoyed the French, Italian, and Pan Asian restaurants in the evenings and meals on the beach or at one of the restaurants near the beach during the day. Breakfast was mostly at the Preferred Beach Club. Coffee was delivered every day through the “Secret” door…a splendid feature! We had drinks at the lobby bar nightly and usually made a stop at the temporary Preferred Club Bar. As always, the staff was the highlight of the trip…these were the best of the best… Manuel took care of us at the Presidential Beach Bed. He is always working hard to make it an enjoyable day! Hugo filled in for Manuel on his day on one of our days at the Presidential Beach Bed and took great care of us on the Preferred Beach. Mauricio recognized right away from previous trips and greeted us like an old friend. He also gave us fantastic service on the Preferred Beach. Francisco at Himitsu was a star as our server. Alfonso was our Concierge and took excellent care of us and provided valuable information to us. Gabriella at the Preferred Beach Club Restaurant always greeted us by name and took great care of us on each of the days we were at the restaurant. Alvaro is a star as an ambassador and member of the Bell Staff. He always remembers us and says hello when he sees us around the resort. Carlos drove us on the golf carts several times to navigate around the stairs to the main building (I had some leg issues a couple of days) and around the property. This place is magic for us. Just being there gives us great peace. We are already planning our next trip!

Excellent Service, Mix of Four and Five Star Features

The service at this hotel is wonderful. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable with the exception of the super firm mattress. We asked for a topper, and the housekeeping staff remade our bed with it, which made it much more comfortable. We had a room with a swim out pool which was private and relaxing. We would not have been as happy with the stay if we had to use the main pool. It looked a bit too crowded. Important to note: the pool swim out room has a step down separating the bed from the sofa/sliding door to walk outside. This is not well placed and could be a concern for elderly people or people with injuries. The lobby is the main gathering place in the hotel because there are no other air conditioned areas of the hotel for lounging. It's beautiful, but the hotel could use more common areas for people to relax outside of their rooms and the heat. Unfortunately, the food is not five star. If you're like us and come from a city with many restaurant, then you'll probably think it's decent but not great. The Bordeaux dining room was cozy but outdated. The other restaurants offered better decor. The breakfast buffet was served in a large ball room. It offered a variety of foods which were nice to try for breakfast. We did not try to the spa or the gym. Overall, this property has some five star qualities but several areas that we'd rate a four. It will cost anywhere from $80 (shuttle for 2) to $100-$150 (private car) to transport each way to and from this hotel from the Cancun airport.
