Not Worth the Money – Very Disappointing Stay

My husband and I stayed at Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa as newlyweds. We chose it because we had previously had an excellent experience at Secrets Akumal, so we booked this one for our honeymoon expecting the same level of luxury. It was a huge mistake. From the moment we arrived, the hotel entrance was a total disappointment—nothing like what the false advertising suggests. Stained walls, dirty couches, and the wood paneling on parts of the walls was badly damaged and dented. The room looked reasonably clean at first, but the more we looked, the more issues we found. The mirror separating the bathtub from the bed looks like it’s about to fall; if you pull it without extreme caution, it could fall directly onto the bed and cause a serious accident. In the toilet area, the part where the toilet paper holder is located looked like it had fecal residue on it. Unacceptable. To order room service, I called for 9 minutes trying the concierge, reception, and the operator—no one answered. Despite all of this, what shocked and disappointed us the most was the food across the restaurants. In most restaurants they require “formal” or “smart casual” attire. Imagine our surprise: we followed the dress code, but when we entered these restaurants they were neglected and dirty. We decided it wasn’t even worth the effort to leave the room and get dressed up for dinner. At the Spice restaurant, the menus are very old and in poor condition. The floor seating cushions clearly haven’t been shaken out or cleaned in a long time. The plastic chairs are completely worn out. Food took up to 40 minutes to arrive. At the Italian restaurant Cin-Cin, we ordered a pizza and it tasted like a frozen pizza from a convenience store (like a 7/11). I am not exaggerating. From there, we were only able to try Tamarindo and Castaways, and the service there was also terrible. The waiters treat you as if they’re doing you a favor. No greeting, no “please,” no “thank you.” At the Market Café buffet, there were dishes that no one could even identify because even looking closely you couldn’t tell what you were eating. Many buffet sections didn’t have anyone attending them, so you had to serve yourself. The rest of the restaurants were always closed. And at the end of it all, of course, they still stand there expecting a generous tip after such poor service. It was impossible to find a single available lounge chair at the pool or the beach. The beach lounge chairs are extremely far from the ocean, so be prepared to burn your feet running to the water. For snorkeling, it’s disgusting that they offer you a used mouthpiece and do not provide the option to get a new one. If you want drinks while lying on the beach lounge chairs, be prepared to wait more than an hour and a half for the waitress to come back with another drink. It was also nearly impossible to find clean towels at the pool. We asked more than three employees where we could get them and no one knew. On top of that, the towels look very old and some are torn. In short, we deeply regret wasting our money at this hotel and being misled by the “Secrets” brand name. We learned the hard way that the brand is not a guarantee of a luxury experience. To make matters worse, on our way to breakfast an employee named Judith approached us to sell us the Hyatt membership program. She asked for three hours of our vacation to listen to the hotel’s marketing strategy. We were on our honeymoon—the last thing we want is to hear a sales pitch about the chain’s marketing strategy. And finally, after I received the satisfaction survey by email and left my honest feedback, the Assistant to the General Manager, Arturo Mendoza Juárez, emailed me basically saying that all my complaints were invalid because I hadn’t raised them while still at the hotel—despite the fact that no concierge and no one at check-out ever asked how our stay was going. They simply took the keys and ordered our taxi to the airport. For a stay that cost 11,000 MXN per night, this is not just disappointing—it’s a total rip-off, and it’s outrageous that they still try to blame the guest for complaining. Conclusion: the price is completely unjustified for such poor service, neglected facilities, and bad attitude. I would not recommend this property at all—especially not for a special occasion like a honeymoon.

    Huatulco getaway

For a place I have never been to before, the staff other than one person was great. Check in and check out went great. Building could use some upkeep but resort always had people working on some of that. The room we were in was fantastic. The views are great. The weather is fabulous every day. The food is resort food. Plenty of activities off site if thats your thing. Could use an upgrade in pool lounge chairs and the number of them. If not there early in morning hard to get chairs if arriving at say 10am. Overall a good experience and plan to come back.

    10 days of guarantees sun

Incredible views from everywhere, nice staff, perfect weather. Only negatives would be the decor is dated and it all looks a little dirty and tires compared to other Secrets resorts, but all positives made up of that.

    2nd amazing winter get away

Nomario, the captain of the Market Cafe, managed the daily large crowds of diners for both breakfast and lunch with such efficiency and effectiveness.......... Ishmael your bartender at the sports bar made us amazing custom-made cocktails that were delicious.......... Gloria your assistant food and beverage manager arrange a special dinner for the four of us at Castaways, that was served by Captain Luis Angel & waiter Sebastian and Chef Angel. What an amazing evening. Thank you Gloria....... Maradonia anchored the lobby bar with such elegance & class........ Natalia the sushi chef made us creative offerings........ Your entertainment team led by Daniel and Amir and the ladies, made all the activities so much fun to participate in. But the real Gem of the crew was Alejandro. This guy's got so much positive energy. He really took care of us on our kayaking tour, helping us launch and land, adjusting our seats even doubled back when he noticed my sandals were missing out in the ocean and found both of them floating apart. He gave us very interesting historical local info about the area when we were at the Turtle Beach. Alejandro made all the activities pool volleyball etc, so much more fun and entertaining. Thank you Alejandro!!!!!

    Does not meet Secrets standard

This was a very disappointing trip overall. If you’re looking for a spring break–style atmosphere with heavy crowds, long lines, and consistently poor service, this may be the right fit — otherwise, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Service across the resort was overwhelmed and inconsistent. Restaurants regularly had long wait times, even later in the evening, and it was common for menu items to be sold out. Servers appeared exhausted, bar staff were inexperienced, and management seemed disconnected and uninvolved. Drink service was particularly frustrating. Poolside service was limited to roughly once per day unless you actively hunted someone down or waited in line. During an eight-day stay, basic drink options were frequently unavailable — no Corona, no Dos Equis, no Amaretto Sour, and most requests were met with “no.” The default response was essentially Amstel Light, which was plentiful, but not exactly a solution. Dos Equis appeared briefly for two days, then disappeared again. While the food quality itself was not bad, the experience surrounding it made dining unpleasant. The pool area largely emptied by 5 p.m., which became understandable once you saw restaurant lines forming early. Even trying to avoid peak hours by dining at 9 or 10 p.m. still resulted in 20-minute waits and limited menu availability. We have stayed at several other Secrets resorts in different locations and had excellent experiences, which makes this one especially disappointing. There were simply too many issues to list fully, but overall, this location does not meet the standards we’ve come to expect. I would not return and would not recommend it.
