    Solo holiday - Amazing!

3 days into my weeks stay and I felt the need to write something early! I booked this last summer and was a bit nervous about coming after some of the negative reviews online. Something about it made me keep my reservation, and glad I did. Everything is perfect. One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. I had a warm feeling about the place as soon as I arrived. Amazing room, brilliant food and cocktails. Every member of staff is friendly and professional. Delighted I have another 4 days here. Extra shout out to Miguela and Sheresse, and Daniel from the gym. Don’t let the negative reviews put you off. Glad I stuck with my gut feeling about this place, absolutely paradise! I visited here solo and have felt welcome from day 1!

    Royalton Chic-try somewhere else

Overall the experience at the Royalton Chic in Antigua was mediocre at best. It was our second trip to a Royalton, both in Antigua. The accommodations were very nice, room was a nice size and the view was very nice. Our butler Max was better as the trip progressed, felt he was overloaded with guests to care for and his partner was a no show. Someone let me know BTW when SKYY vodka became a premium vodka (that was the alcohol provided for ur room). The pool bartender (Hannah) was great. It goes downhill from there: the food was OK (being kind). The Mediterranean restaurant should be shut down or change the cuisine. The ‘steakhouse’ is good for a hamburger (maybe). The best food was in the buffet and the food truck. Although how does a breakfast meal have no butter or napkins! That was a first. The beach for diamond club members look like it was hit by a storm and never repaired(a mess at best). And then a snow storm hits NY and flights are canceled. Ask the Diamond club front desk our possible options to extend our visit, only to be told to call the original company with whom we made the reservations, they could not help. Just dismissive and really couldn’t give a ——- about our situation. Told Max (butler) and although he was polite and apologetic, offered no help. We ended up in a nice AirBnB in Jolly Harbour thanks to the inept assistance of the Royalton staff. My 2 (score) is generous.

    Lunch Bag Let Down

Outside of spending time with close friends, the experience was just okay. The check-in process was complicated and frustrating. It took way too long and the briefing was not clear at all. The resort continually ran out of supplies....my room came with no bath towels, the body wash ran empty and the coffee machine packets ran out and were not replaced. You are forced to go to the front desk as housekeeping will not replace depleted items. Each room was to come with a snack basket but in mine, I got a second hair dryer instead in the basket. The bars, on numerous occasions, ran out of beer or other beverages so you had to find another bar. The food was mediocre with the buffet having the best meals. The restaurants were average at best. Breakfast was served at the buffet with the coffee always being lukewarm, never hot. You had to go to the sweets and bakery shop to get a hot cup of coffee. Traditional Antigua cuisine (i.e. fungee, pepperpot, ducana) was not served at the resort, at least I couldn't find it on any menu. The staff service and friendliness was not consistent...some were grumpy and others very cheerful and helpful. The excursion we went on (stingrays, Devils Bridge, Betty's Hope) was disappointing except for swimming with the stingrays which was very good. Devils Bridge rock formation was small and underwhelming and not worth the stop. At Betty's Hope (old plantation) everyone was left to wander around and read the various placards...no tour guide to answer questions or provide a narrative. However, the picnic lunch served was the best meal I had on the entire trip. We also wanted to experience local cuisine and a trip to St John's market was the place to go. I asked at the front desk and the tour operator about an excursion to the market on Wednesday. Both told us to simply take a cab and they will also pick you up. Great. However, the one thing they didn't tell us was that the market food vendors are only operating Friday and Saturday, not Wednesday. Yet another disappointing excursion. The beach and water were great and it was not over crowded so there was no searching for beach loungers. The daily temperatures were great also around 28C each day. A highlight. The flight arrangements were horrible. We departed Toronto at 12:30pm (delayed until 1:30pm) and eventually arrived at the hotel around 9pm and ate dinner close to 10pm. Departure day was not very functional in that check-out is noon but our flight was at 7:30pm. This gets us back home just before midnight and out of the airport around 1:30am. In closing, I would not stay at a Royalton property again nor go back to Antigua. The island was a "typical" Caribbean island but not worth the 5 hour flight.

The yoga session with Elvis Bailey this morning was great, a sense of balance and peace, with modified poses to suite your needs.

    A varied stay

We recently got married at this resort, which had been a change from Jamaica's Royalton due to the hurricane. There was a group of 8 of us, some staying for a week some for 10 days. In terms of the process of planning and amending the wedding, I cannot complain about. The Blue Diamond Weddings team were great, and the on site wedding coordinator - Nailah, was incredible. We just wanted a low key and intimate wedding with 6 of our friends who were in attendance, and that was what we got. The day was truly perfect. The resort as a whole is nice, we stayed in Diamond Club blg 6 where the rooms are large and really spacious, however our friends stayed in buildings 1 and 2 and their rooms were much smaller and not as expected from the Royalton brand - though appreciate the hotel has been remodelled from its previous life. Restaurants-wise I was pretty impressed withe the variety and selection of foods, the quality was good, and the coffee shop was great with the sandwiches, treats and coffees available from 7am-10pm every day! Generally, the service within the restaurants was good and as a group of 8 generally felt like we were accommodated well, except for at Hunter's Steakhouse. We'd booked 2 tables of 4 through out butler at Hunter's one night (the last night of us all ebing together) and said they could not accommodate a table of 8. However, upon arrival at the restaurants ant throughout our meals there was a table of 8 free all night. We asked if we could move and they said 'would not be possible' which did not make sense to us, when we were all there and were happy to move our cutlery and napkins, they were not accommodating at all. That being said, our butler, Shandell, was attentive and helpful, and was always willing to try and fix issues for us - he worked hard to ensure we could have an hour's late checkout as complimentary (which it should be as part of the wedding package anyway) as we hadn't received early check in. Our friends rooms were often not stocked or serviced, and they would return to find no clean/dry towels, no water, beds not made, up to relatively late in the day. Concierge were responsive when these items were requested, however they should not have had to ask for this replenishment almost every single day. We did not have this issue in Diamond Club, but in my opinion, this should not be something that differs depending on what tier. And is frankly not good enough for a supposedly 5 star resort. That being said, the resort is lovely, grounds are clean, people always working to ensure the pools are clear, the beach is relatively seaweed-free, and sunbeds/parasols were clean. The facilities were lovely, gym was good, pools were large and plenty of options for areas to relax or party depending on what vibe you were feeling, good selection of drinks and cocktails, and always something to eat. The beach bar was one of our favourite spots, especially to watch the sun set! A nice hotel in a fabulous location with some standout features, though a little refining required. Wouldn't stay here again, but would try another resort in the Royalton range.
