Horrible… Mold smell
Rooms smell like toxic mold, they tried to cover it with a fragrance but it wore off the next day. Food was the worst I have ever had in the Carribean. Don’t bring kids into the hotel the mold was a constant complaint for elevator talk. Mold is a neurotoxin. Suffered from severe migraine there.

Amazing hotel - Lovely people
Amazing holiday Great people they are all so friendly and always go above and beyond, the food in the hotel was top tier from the buffet to steak restaurant and the Caribbean restaurant. When we got back to our room everyday it was lovely and clean, the views from the room of the beach and fort Barrington were great. For the whole stay me and my partner felt welcomed by every single member of staff and I would definitely go back to this hotel in the future.

Not up to Royalton standard.
We’ve stayed at both the Royalton Jamaica Negril, and Royalton Grenada, and we feel that Royalton Antigua has a long way to go to get to the high standard of both of these resorts. Before listing the negatives, I do just want to mention the positives. The beach is stunning, and the sea is amazing. You can see lots of fish swimming around you, it’s lovely. All of the views around the hotel are beautiful, overlooking the water. The diamond club lounge is also well thought out. It’s air conditioned with a balcony overlooking the water, which made a great place for our son to nap each day - as it was also generally quiet! There is a good selection of food and drink in there too. All the food is covered to keep flies away and the food is changed regularly throughout the day. The staff in the sports bar were great, always very friendly with us and our son. We booked a couple of excursions privately through a local taxi driver to both Stingray City and an amazing restaurant called Salt Plage, which is right on the beach. I would highly recommend both of these. Now for the multiple areas of concern. We went away with our two-year-old toddler and paid for the Diamond Club service. When we arrived in our room, we found the mini-bar unstocked and had to ask for bottles of water. The cot we needed for our son wasn’t delivered until after 19.00pm and that was after having to ask several times for it. The cot itself was really inadequate. It was on four wheels, one of which was missing. At one point we noticed that the screws weren’t securely attached and had come out of a hinge. Whilst they did fix it, they were initially non-committal about doing so, until we told them that it was an unacceptable safety risk to our son. Our heavy glass shower door came off one of its hinges during our stay, which if that had fallen on our son, could have killed him. The Diamond Club pool is missing multiple pool tiles and on a number of occasions my son handed me broken pool tiles. He could very easily have injured himself on these. The water level in the children’s pool was inconsistent. Initially it came up to my ankle and the rest of the stay, it came half way up my leg. Initially we were quite comfortable with our son doing a lot in the pool with the lower water level, but we had to modify what he was allowed to do based on the higher water level, which was confusing for him. The slides in this pool also held a lot of water, which wasn’t cleaned off. That meant that a once mild ride down a slide with a toddler, became quite a bit more risky. The service in the pool bar left a lot to be desired. There were limited staff serving four different areas, and I got the distinct impression that us asking for a drink was an inconvenience to some of the staff! We also really hated the smell of marijuana around the pool and communal areas. My real objection was when we brought our son back from breakfast at 08.00 am and after getting to the 8th floor where our room was based, we were greeted to a stench of marijuana. A guest had clearly been smoking this in their room and the whole floor stank, which is not ideal to have to walk a small child through. On our final day, people were smoking it in the outside area of the buffet restaurant whilst people were eating! Whilst we were there, it was a quiet period for the hotel. They closed restaurants on a rotation basis and on a number of days, even the buffet wasn’t open for lunch. We went to the Caribbean restaurant for dinner one evening and two out of the six options for children’s meals were unavailable, due to Grazie restaurant being closed. That left us with two options that were completely unsuitable for two year old and only two options left, which weren’t foods that I would necessarily have chosen for him. Other parents there with young children also expressed to us that they were struggling to find suitable food for their children. At a five star resort, that is just not good enough. I can appreciate that it’s more economical for the resort to close restaurants in a quiet period but given we were sold a holiday advertising them all as options to dine at, I expect to get what I paid for! The pool bar ran out of water on several occasions, which I just don’t think is acceptable. I can appreciate that sometimes alcohol supplies might be limited, but water, really?!!! Some of the food in the buffet could do with better labelling. For example the breakfast cereals - several people ended up taking frosted flakes, mistaking them for cornflakes. Luckily I overheard the conversation otherwise I would likely have given my son a sugary breakfast cereal. With tables in the restaurants, they don’t have salt and pepper on them like most restaurants. By the time you’ve asked for it and waited for it to arrive, your food is cold. The air con is also another big problem. The air con wasn’t always working in all the restaurants making it unpleasant to stay in during 30 plus degree weather. In our room, it made everything damp. Even our unworn clothes stank and felt unpleasant to wear. With the diamond club service, you are entitled to a bottle of premium spirits delivered to your room for each week of your stay. I would have thought that the butler would have ensured you got that as standard, but we had to ask for this several times and only got it on the day before we left. I’m not sure how they expect anyone to drink a litre of spirits in less than two days! Again, we heard similar stories from other couples who had experienced the same thing. We booked a cabana twice and on both occasions we had to ask for the mini bar to be stocked. On one occasion the fridge wasn’t even turned on, which we had to point out to the waiter. We also had to ask for the snacks that were included as part of the package that we had paid for. We are so disappointed, as we are loyal Royalton customers. Royalton Antigua did fall well short of our expectations. I would also say this resort is completely unsuitable for a toddler, so it shouldn’t be sold as a family resort.

They sell false luxury
Pros. The bay view rooms that start with 10 are amazing. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Mini fridge stocked daily. Towels and bedding was changed daily. The staff members were friendly and accommodating. The pastries are delicious. Cons. The food is horrible. Bland, tasteless and not much variety. Limited protein options. Poor sanitation at the restaurants and swim up bars. The tables, chair arms and bars are sticky. Crumbs on the tables and chairs. Used cups littered the corners of the swim up bar. The eating areas was overrun with flies, not forgetting the coffee shop. Flies were in the glass casing housing the food and ice-cream. "We sell rooms not bedding" this was quoted to us when we didn't receive a room with two beds which we paid for initially. The problem was rectified the next day after speaking with a manager and standing up for ourselves.

Some issues but great service from beach staff!
Although we had a number of issues with the Diamond Club product, our rooms and last minute restaurant closures, the one thing i want to shout about here is the FANTASTIC service from Diana and Anya (beach butlers). They both took the time to ensure we always had everything we needed and more! They both have such a natural way with people and were definitely the highlight of our stay - nothing was ever too much trouble. Thank you both for looking after us so well!
