Oct 14, 2026NOT a "resort"
The Royal Lahaina in Maui was by no means a "resort". My room definitely hasn't been updated since the 1970's. No kitchenette, no sink in the bathroom... not even a light in the shower! The ceiling was roughly patched and coated with a dozen layers of paint. The corners of the floor, walls and cabinetry had years of dust in them. There were even baby cockroaches. This place was far from a "resort"... it was more like a re-opened Motel 6 from the 1970's or early 1980's. Parking is an additional $40 +tax per night. A small breakfast in the "resort" was $53 +tax. ONE POSTIVE NOTE: My son needed shampoo because someone hung 2 body washes & 1 conditioner. BAM! Someone came to the room within 10 minutes!!! Kudos to that guy!!!!

Gretchen was the ultimate host at the Royal Lahaina. She was thoughtful, kind, proactive, and responsive. Went above and beyond to make sure that everything was taken care of for us, including all of the little details. Trip of a lifetime. Would definitely recommend the Royal Lahaina. to any family looking to create lifetime experiences. Ask for Gretchen, and she’ll take care of you

Great location but overpriced. Disgusting sink , stopper doesn’t work. mold in the bathroom ceiling and shower temperature goes from really cold to really hot no in between after 2 minutes of showering. Also leaks all over the floor the maintenance guy was not helpful at all and said the sink stopper was fine “just don’t touch it” I took pictures because it was so gross and the staff here weren’t nearly as friendly as people on the big island this was not a good introduction to Maui. On top of all that they added extra unauthorized charges (I believe for resort fees) even though resort fees were prepaid in my reservation. I want my money back this is ridiculous

Oct 09, 2026Beautiful Kaanapali at The Royal Lahaina
We reserved an oceanfront bungalow for one night. Lessons learned: ask if there are events scheduled for the "Bungalow Lawn", as those days will have events set up between your room and the ocean. Even if not, see if you can book in building C, D, or E - as A and B are behind a pool, loungers, and the cabanas and the view of the water is partially blocked. In those two buildings, you may be subject to music and pool noise. Overall notes: The staff is overburdened and still recovering from the trauma of the Lahaina fire. Give them grace and empathy. They are lovely. Special shout out to Stacey at the reception desk. The restaurant has good food and the bartender Mate is outstanding. Take the cultural walking tour (complimentary!) if you are there for a day it's offered. There are other culture center classes as well. We have been coming for years and we'll return. Mahalo, Royal Lahaina.

spend a little more and stay at Hyatt
Beautiful location, but the restaurant service let the stay down. Royal Lahaina has a lovely setting, with lush gardens and a beautiful beach. We spent a lot of time by the ocean and enjoyed that part of our stay. The bungalows were convenient with kids, but ours looked quite different from the online photos. Although described as newly renovated, it still felt dated. The housekeeping team, however, was very kind and responsive. Our biggest disappointment was Lahaina Moon. The restaurant staff we encountered were unfriendly and made us feel unwelcome. We ended up skipping breakfast several times, even though it was included in our package. Before our stay, we confirmed by phone that sharing a few bites with our three-year-old would not incur an extra charge. At breakfast, a staff member bluntly told us she would charge us if she saw us sharing food with our child. I initially thought she was joking, but she was serious. That interaction left a particularly bad impression. The food presentation was disappointing too: our charcuterie board arrived in a takeout container, with crackers and fruit that fell short of expectations. I would encourage management to spend time in the restaurant during breakfast, lunch, and dinner and observe the guest experience firsthand. A warmer welcome and more attentive service would make a real difference. We enjoyed the beach, gardens, and helpful housekeeping staff, but hospitality matters just as much as the location. Next time, we would spend a little more and return to the Hyatt, where we’ve had friendlier, more welcoming service.
