Winding down at Riu Yucatán.
Best food ever. Everyone is not in a rush. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. No one pressures you to tip them. Love the vibe, so chill and relaxing.

Riu Yucatan February 2026
My bf and I went to the Riu Yucatan as part of a Sunwing package for my birthday Feb 2026. Overall, the hotel was great. The two best things were the food and the beach. Food was very good and fresh and there was always a lot to choose from. We never went to any a la carte restaurants at the resort because the food at the buffet was that good and there was so much variety. The late-night buffet was very convenient and the food there was also good. The beach is beautiful and huge! The Riu portion appears to go on forever. The areas closest to the hotel fill up quickly and a lot of people leave towels on chairs for the entire day. This is the first resort I've stayed at where it was so prevalent. It's very annoying and inconsiderate. But if you walk away from the resort a bit further there are lots of available beach chairs. There's also staff on the beach that will help you find chairs and bring them to you. That was really appreciated, especially if you want to stay near the bar areas. The beach itself is beautiful, the water was warm and pretty shallow far out. The only downside is that there are no umbrellas, although there are lots of palm trees. The worst part is the noise. It's not that the resort itself is noisy, it's pretty peaceful, but going to sleep and sleeping in is difficult. The rooms are not insulated at all and you can hear everything at all times. Doors slamming, guests speaking, babies crying, it all sounds like it's right outside your door. The bathroom is also a weird setup. There was no door to our bathroom although there was a door to the toilet, and the shower door is glass, so basically no privacy. Our room said 2 twins but they were pushed together and it was bigger than a king and very comfortable. The staff are friendly and the grounds are beautifully landscaped. The resort is in the gated community Playacar so it feels safe and is about a $15 CAD cab ride into Playa del Carmen. Ivan at the late night snack bar was super sweet. Bety at the lobby bar and Alfredo at the front desk were great too.

Don’t stay here- Not worth the cost!
We stayed as a group of 4 in February, we were booked for a week. We’ve never stayed in a Riu hotel before we’ve stayed in Secrets and Hyatt chain. We had stayed in Mexico City the week before and spent a fair bit and did not want to spend too much the 2nd week hence booking the Yucatan. Here are the pros and cons: pros- Stunning beaches, and you can walk the length of the coastline. Variety of wildlife to see on the property. Cons- Everything else: Rooms smell mouldy, musty. The furniture and decor genuinely is tired run down. It is not spacious as has been described. Main buffet restaurant is like a canteen with food options sub par. Speciality restaurant to be fair we’re ok. Overall the type of guests staying here were overly loud and noisy. We asked and paid considerably more to move for 5 days to the Riu Palace Riviera Maya. This class of Riu was like night and day from the Yucatan. We enjoyed our stay there. You definitely get what you pay for. If you’re solely interested in a party hotel eating and drinking yourself silly and don’t care what the rooms and ambiance of the hotel is like- then definitely stay here! The staff

Friends holiday
We all had a lovely time at the riu yucatan it’s situated in a gated community there’s a shopping arcade just down the road across from the riu playacar hotel the food was great with plenty of choice at all meal times the best a la carte was the Italian beautiful beach with palm trees for shade if you can’t find a sun bed the staff will bring you some we loved seeing all the wildlife around the beautiful well kept grounds the staff all work really hard the rooms are a bit dated but they’ve got everything you need they do smell damp but thats maybe because of the climate our air con worked fine the fridge in the room was restocked when you wanted it you can also use the sister hotels the tequila and the playcar for a change of scenery just a short walk away it isent that far by taxi to playa del carmen with its many shops bars and restaurants we would definitely return to this hotel in the future

A WONDERFUL winter get away
We have traveled far and wide. We LOVE this resort! We visited last year, again this year and will definitely return next year. It is an hour drive from the Cancun airport, depending on how many stops you must make on route. The rooms are excellent, clean and very private. I can't say enough about the food! Yes, it is THAT GOOD!. I had the pleasure of meeting Amaury this evening and expressed my pleasure and delight with this resort. I am sending a special shout out to Hortensia and Fuesto , who work tirelessly to provide the best dining experience possible. This is definitely our destination place for the relief we need from our severe winter climate. We look forward to returning again next year at this time.
