Riu Tequila Resort - Playa del Carmen, Mexico, truly amazing!!!
Resort Review: Riu Tequila Resort Location: Playa del Carmen, Mexico One-word summary: Outstanding Context of Stay Our family of eleven stayed at Riu Tequila Resort in Playa del Carmen after our original booking at Bahia Principe Grand Coba Resort was unexpectedly compromised due to extensive renovations, leaving half of that resort inaccessible. Approximately three months prior to our holiday, Riu Tequila was offered to us as an alternative. Despite our initial hesitation, the experience far exceeded expectations. Based on prior research and several positive YouTube reviews, we anticipated a good standard, but our firsthand experience turned out to be truly exceptional. Detailed Review Service — 5/5: Service throughout the resort was exemplary. Every staff member—from front-desk attendants to housekeeping and groundskeepers displayed consistent warmth, professionalism, and attentiveness. Staff regularly checked on guests’ comfort, engaging in friendly conversation and offering assistance with genuine care. The overall atmosphere was welcoming and reassuring, ensuring we felt well looked after throughout our stay. General Cleanliness — 4/5: The resort grounds and communal areas were impeccably maintained. A large, dedicated team of staff worked tirelessly to preserve the property’s cleanliness from tree surgeons and pathway cleaners to housekeeping personnel. Any mess or accidental damage caused by the resort’s resident wildlife (raccoons, capybaras, and coatis) was swiftly handled, including repainting and restoration work where necessary. Hospitality — 4/5: All staff were consistently friendly, humble, and professional. Their politeness and sincerity made our stay especially comfortable. Tipping was encouraged but never expected; staff provided the same high level of service regardless of gratuities. The resort team was both informative and approachable, contributing significantly to the relaxed and respectful atmosphere. All-Inclusive Offerings — 5/5: Riu Tequila’s all-inclusive package was exceptional. Guests enjoyed unlimited access to a wide range of entertainment, food, drinks, and beach activities all at no extra cost. The resort provided a perfect balance of relaxation and recreation, ensuring both adults and children were entertained throughout our two-week stay. The abundance of on-site activities reduced the need for additional excursions, creating excellent value for money. Internet Connection — 5/5: The Wi-Fi connectivity was strong, stable, and available across the entire resort, including the beach area. All devices remained securely connected throughout our stay, which was particularly impressive given the size of the property. Entertainment — 4/5: The resort’s entertainment programme catered effectively to all age groups. Daily and evening events included pool games, aqua fitness, kids’ mini-parties, stage performances, and the renowned Riu “All-Resorts Party Gathering.” The entertainment team displayed high energy and enthusiasm, ensuring guests of all ages from toddlers to seniors felt included and engaged. Pool Cleanliness — 2/5: While the pools were generally clean in the mornings, maintenance during the day appeared inconsistent. Floating debris, food remnants, and litter were occasionally visible by afternoon. The presence of coatis near the pool area sometimes led to additional mess, which was not always promptly addressed. Adults-Only Pool & Swim-Up Bar: Well-maintained but frequently overcrowded. Staff responded quickly to any mess or spills, maintaining high hygiene standards despite the heavy use. RiuLand Kids Pool: This area would benefit from more frequent supervision and cleaning. Although the entertainment team managed activities well, general maintenance and safety oversight were limited. Adults without children often entered the kids’ pool area, leading to overcrowding and occasional safety concerns. It is recommended that a dedicated staff member be permanently stationed at the RiuLand pool to monitor access, enforce age restrictions, and address any unsafe behaviour or wildlife interference. This would ensure a safer and more enjoyable environment for young guests. Restaurant Cleanliness — 3/5: Restaurants were efficiently managed with prompt table service, regular floor cleaning, and quick table resets. Staff maintained good hygiene standards and ensured that dining areas were consistently tidy, even during peak hours. Menu Options (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks & Drinks) — 5/5: Dining at Riu Tequila was one of the highlights of the stay. The resort offered extensive buffet selections for all meals, featuring a variety of international and local dishes, each cooked to a high standard. Guests could also choose from several specialty restaurants offering themed cuisine, such as steakhouse, Italian, and Asian options. Between main meal times, outdoor snack bars served freshly prepared pizzas, burgers, fried chicken, sandwiches, fruits, and ice cream. The sports bar remained open from 8 a.m. to midnight, offering light snacks and drinks. Beverages were available 24/7, including cocktails, mocktails, soft drinks, and water. Alcoholic options especially tequila were generously served. Importantly, bar staff strictly monitored age-appropriate service, ensuring underage guests were not served alcohol. Ventilation & Air Conditioning — 5/5: Air conditioning and ventilation systems functioned perfectly throughout the resort. All public spaces and rooms remained cool, fresh, and comfortable, contributing significantly to overall guest satisfaction. Room Facilities & Appliances — 5/5: Guest rooms were well-equipped and thoughtfully arranged, including amenities such as an iron and mini ironing board, kettle with tea and coffee supplies, and a daily replenished minibar. Each room also featured a small in-room bar, restocked daily with bottled water, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages an appreciated touch for guests seeking convenience. Housekeeping replenished supplies regardless of whether room cleaning was requested. Resort Map & Signage — 5/5: Signage across the property was clear, well-placed, and easy to follow. Maps and directional signs were visible in key locations, ensuring guests could easily navigate the resort without confusion. Overall Experience — 4/5: Our stay at Riu Tequila Resort was truly outstanding. The resort surpassed expectations across nearly all categories, offering a balance of relaxation, entertainment, and quality service. The presence of native wildlife including raccoons, capybaras, and coatis added an exciting and unique dimension to the experience, especially for children. Despite their visibility, these animals maintained natural boundaries, coexisting harmoniously with guests. In summary, Riu Tequila Resort provides exceptional value for money and caters excellently to both families and couples. Its welcoming environment, wide variety of activities, extensive all-inclusive options, and consistently high service standards make it an ideal choice for those seeking a well-rounded, enjoyable, and worry-free holiday experience. Final Rating: 4/5

Be warned about room alcohol and more
I am here with my wife for our anniversary room 2222 the restaurants are disgusting and the alcohol in the room is fake and has made me very ill. Please be very careful if you stay at this resort - don't drink the alcohol in the room be warned. My stomach has become very swollen and very painful my eyes very blurry. I stopped drinking for a day and was fine.. then had a drink from one of the main bars and I was fine. Returned to the room and had a drink from one of the optics and I can hardly see again and my stomach is in pain again. Please please be warned this happened before in the Rui reggae in Jamaica some years ago so I am now 100% sure the drinks in the hotel room are fake and very dangerous, please be warned. I would like to add that the staff are lovely including the room maids who's towel art is amazing. Entertainment team work hard but they do cater to the Mexican guests rather than being more internationally inclusive in their shows. Tiu trips are extortionate, over £130 upwards for one person, some not even a full day. Taxis down to 5th Avenue approx £8 one way, rip off but the heat means you will pay rather than the 30 min walk in the hot sun. If you're Muslim or don't eat pork beware as the pork is not separated away from other buffet food.

Great stay
We stayed as family of 4 (14 and 16 year old teens) in two rooms in October for 9 nights. We really enjoyed it the teenagers not quite so much. Rooms are nice, beds are comfy, air con wasn't great in our room but better in kids - luck of the draw! Grounds are lovely with palm trees and lots of wildlife, pools are nice although the adults only pool does get 'lively' closed a few times with people being sick. Night time entertainment is fun, the party's were really good, silent Disco was fab. Buffet was surprisingly good! Lots of choice, salad bar was great and lots of hot options. Chinese restaurant was a bit disappointing, Italian was decent and the steakhouse was our favourite. Star of the hotel is definitely the beach it was amazing! Water was warm, sand was clean and so soft, can get body boards/canoe etc for free which was great and they also do paid day trips. Staff were all friendly, taxi to play was 150 peso, along to Puerto morellos was 800 peso all set price so no haggling required. Only real complaint for hotel would be more for teenagers to do. Kids club stops at 12 and somewhere for teens to meet/hang out would be great!

Amazing 11 days at Riu Tequila :)
Our first time to a Riu hotel and first time to Mexico and we were blown away! From the moment we arrived the staff was amazing from the swift check in and taking our suitcases to our room, the cleanliness of the room, the welcome bottle of tequila to go with the fully stocked mini bar! The waiting staff could be hit and miss but our go to people were Laura and Rangel, superb service every time. We were over in block 31 and far enough away from the entertainment noise. The noise is there, especially at weekends when the hotel bursts into life but we experienced no problems and it didn’t affect us - but it is the party hotel and they do like to party! Entertainment was great and during our stay we had the neon party and the white party to keep us busy. The effort that is put into these parties is amazing . We did 3 excursions - Sian Ka’an, Holbox, Chichen Itza. I would recommend all 3 but if you can only do one - Holbox is pure paradise! There was no problem getting beds by the pools but we spent our free days at the beach, just beautiful 😍 I did not enjoy 5th Avenue, it was 150 pesos in a taxi to get to the start of it and from the moment we arrived we were hassled to go in the shops, it wasn’t an enjoyable experience especially in the heat. I bought my gifts from the stalls on the complex 5 minutes down the road from the hotel (walk out the hotel and turn left). No problems with any of the staff, our room was kept spotless and if you do need anything you can request it through the Riu app. Weather was hot, a few thunderstorms in the evenings but they didn’t affect our plans and they were amazing to watch. Brilliant holiday all round…. I would return to this hotel if there weren’t so many other places I want to visit. Choosing RIU in future where possible :)
