Just back from 2weeks at the Riu Republica and what can we say apart from IGNORE NEGATIVE COMMENTS!!! We very nearly cancelled after reading the reviews and are so pleased we decided to give it a go. Here is our experience: Adults only - We are not party people but you can always find quiet places near one of the many pools or bars. Though the party pools and evenings seemed to have everyone enjoying themselves. Restaurants - we had no problem booking for the steakhouse, the steaks and burgers were delicious and cooked just as we asked for. During our stay we also tried the Kaori Asian, Italian, Spanish speciality restaurants and all staff were attentive and food variety very good. Both buffet restaurants were also good with a massive choice! Pool areas - clean and drinks brought to you while in the pool. Sun-beds always available in the shade or full sun. Water slides fun. Beach - the seaweed was kept cleared by staff, lovely sandy beach walks. Saw staff taking drinks round on the beach. Entertainment - varied on the two stages, also entertainment on beach with acrobats on one of the days we were there - which was amazing. The Pink and Jungle pool parties took place at nearby Riu hotels, though we didn’t go we did see queues for the free transport. Rooms - we went with friends and all our rooms were good size, massive large bed, clean, fresh towels daily and bedding changed when requested. Hot water worked perfectly in the shower. Air Con worked in all 3 rooms. Mini bar including selected spirits replenished every 2 days though you can request daily by using the Riu app. The whole hotel area had cleaners all the time so no rubbish laying around. Areas were lit at night so no problem walking back to rooms after evening drinks (we were in the quiet side by waterslides), lifts not always working but with the top floor only being the 3rd it was good exercise after all the delicious food and drinks! Holidays are definitely what you make them and this was helped by the staff and great Riu Republica resort.

Riu Republica
The resort is what you make it, the negative reviews is not really true I had a pleasant stay and the food at the magu restaurant is more quality than the other buffet restaurant. I would also like to add there are two sides to the resort one is the noisy side and the quite side. You will find that the noisy side has more of the younger rowdy crowd who tend to make more mess than the quite side of the resort. The staff is really polite and friendly always trying to meet your expectations. If you are a person who complains about every little detail and don’t like to party this resort is not for you.

Staff attention and kindness made a difference in the week.
Our family was spoiled and pampered (even when the tipping was not obviously intended). There was a disabled elderly in our group, and Main (captain) waiter and waiter David on the Steakhouse were beyond accommodating and focused on her, which made the family very happy. For a birthday celebration, we just mentioned it to the Maitre Pedrito and Buffet waiters Jazmine and Feliciano, and they made the birthday person very happy, going beyond their duties to make her feel special. In general service was outstanding. Beach has lots of chairs and resting spaces. We did not have to go early to get a good spot. No rocks on the sand. We had lots of algae on the sand, but that is not related to the hotel. Be cautious of the food identification tags on the buffet since most of the time it doesn't match the items. I found the furniture, towels and beach chairs to be either stained or wore down. But the sheets in the bed were clean. Pillows are fluffy and clean as well. Mini Bar can be easyly restocked and water bottles are fairly big and available. Entertainment choices were available but I didn't find activities promotion: if you want to participate or join activities you must ask for the schedule. Souvenir store is nicely stocked. Customer Service rep Stephanie is highly efficient and fast finding solutions for a room issue. Pool bartenders (Specially Yani or Yuni) are always interacting with customers and actually listening to your drinks request.

Total Disaster - Take me back to Playa del Carmen!
Worst vacation! A/C stayed constantly on high making room unbearably cold especially at night. No blanket was found in closet and it took almost 2 days to get one after I requested on portal like they asked. Had to confront them at front desk...twice! Bath towels were dingy white with no wash cloths. Floors were disgusting as if they don't sweep or mop. Shower was moldy with rust on shower. Two of the liquor bottles were empty when we arrived and they only restocked the mini fridge every two days. They were always out of pool towels and when we finally got some, they smelled like mildew. I counted 3 cats roaming around the resort. The trash cans around the resort were constantly full and no one ever picked up the dirty dishes that got stacked on the trash can which is probably the reason the cats roam around. The beach was trashed and actually had chicken bones scattered which I assume are from the jerk chicken shack. The vendors on the beach didn't make things better. Finally, the food was horrible except for the fresh fruit. I could tell they recycled lunch food for dinner too. The dining facility though was the only part of the resort where the workers were friendly. Otherwise, everyone was rude and needs customer service training. We've always used Riu resorts for our vacations but after this trip, I'm going to re-think it.

Very bad experience.
Would not recommend this resort. We had 3 rooms 6 girls. #1 Had no air or hot water in all 3 rooms. They did accommodate us to change two rooms but the one room still had no air or hot water. #2. Some one that were staying there smashed the elevator door in could not use the elevator for 3 days. #3 some kids sprayed the fire extinguishers fire alarm went off and the floor had to be evacuated at 2:00 a.m. in the morning. #4. When we moved into the room the second day they were painting the walls when we were walking in I don't know why there were painting to cover the walls I didn't want to know. And when I was packing yesterday I noticed the paint was all over my suitcase. Very very dirty resort.
