Spring Break Policies - Minimum Age Condition: At least one person 21 years or older is required in every room during February thru May. The Hotel reserves the right of admission and may request guests show passport or official ID to prove age. During the remainder of the year, at least one person 18 or older is required in every room. Guests can and will be removed from the property at their own expense in case of any disturbance or complaint from other guests or hotel staff.

We first visited this hotel in 2016 before the recent refurbishment. Personally we preferred the original traditional feel at the hotel which has now been replaced by a more contemporary style. The extent of silver and black in the main reception areas is a bit overpowering. Having said that it is, as before, beautifully appointed with a very grandeur feel. Since our last visit in the lobby they have added a cafeteria called Capuchino which serves beverages and snacks and this stays open for long hours which can be useful. Also in the lobby they have added a new Italian restaurant which we found quite noisy due to its high ceiling and we found the menu choice was quite limited. Of all the speciality restaurants we liked the Krystal best with its more intimate special feel and excellent food. The main buffet restaurant Don Raphael offered a massive selection of food for every taste but as my wife is vegetarian it is important for her to know what she's putting on her plate so we felt they needed more signs to show what some of the dishes contained. I particularly like lobster and this was included on the menu at the Chilis Steak House but because the menu didn't include any vegetarian options we couldn’t go there. A tip if you do want to go to this restaurant go either early or late as it gets very busy. Our room was a junior suite overlooking the garden which was really nice and since the refurbishment had the new bathroom arrangement whereby the bath was almost beside the bed. It suited us fine but I could understand that some people would find this design not to their liking. It had a brilliant shower and very efficient air conditioning system. Like the rest of the hotel the room was always beautifully clean thanks to Anita and the team who looked after it for us. Each day we were treated to a different towel animal on the bed. The management and smooth running of every aspect of the hotel is unquestionable. Everywhere is immaculate and is continually being cleaned, swept and polished. The staff are fantastic always greeting you warmly and genuinely wanting to look after your every need. This service is extended all the way down to the sea. A few special mentions of those staff who were particularly helpful to us. Enrique on the beach who never let our glasses run dry, Carlos and Lorenzo particularly at lunch time in the Chilis restaurant and Rosario in the Don Rafael. It's impossible to mention everyone as they were all outstanding. Sadly by the time we were leaving the true effects of the Coronavirus were starting to effect the occupancy numbers at the hotel. We truly hope that everyone at the hotel stays well and gets through this dreadful virus safely and can all return when it's finally defeated. We hope one day to come back and see you all. Stay safe
15 Days of Fun
I spent 15 days at this hotel and would have stayed longer if I wouldn't have had to evacuate to the US. The staff is incredible, everyone is so nice. They go out of the way to help you in every way. It is incredibly clean. I can honestly say it was the best 15 days of my entire life. Chase C.
Nice mini get away!
I think we have stayed at this resort 4 times. It had been renovated since our last stay 2 years ago. It is a beautiful place and so very clean. The staff is also busy making everything sparkle. We like most of the renovation...pleased they didn’t go with the purple scheme as in the RIU Palace Mexico. We liked the fresh clean look of the suites and the separate toilet and beautiful new walk in shower; however, we do not like that there is no wall between the bathroom/sleeping area. Hence, if one person gets up early and gets ready, the other person will be up and awake also. We do understand why they designed the suites this way. We honestly do know who would like it. We didn’t let it ruin our vacation, because everything else was so wonderful, but that is way we’d give it 4 stars. We’d also like to mention how nice and helpful the staff in every department was...they really want you to have a good vacation.
First visit here but was an awesome vacation
The hotel was excellent in a great location. You could easily walk 10 minutes to get to the shopping district in Playa del Carmen. The food was excellent and I had the lobster ravioli in the Italian restaurant 3 lunches in a row :). Service was top notch and not once were we asked to buy a time share or pressured into anything which is very common for many resorts recently. I would like to give a shout out to Leo with whom we did Riumba Fit, German for never letting our glass empty by the pool (very hard worker) and Said for being a great host. I will definitely go back to this resort!
Our Favorite Resort!
Great vacation! Enjoyed all activities. Loved the water aerobics, sexy Leo made the good workout lots of fun too. The fruit and food was really good. We had great bartenders & servers around the beach & pool, they provided great service even if you just needed water. We have stayed at Riu resorts every where we go but this Riu is our favorite.
