    Back to Riu Palace

Our third year running to this hotel, our second wth friends, not surprisingly it was as good as our previous visits. The experience starts upon entering the hotel, grand doesn't do it justice, the check in staff are friendly, efficient and helpful, as they were throughout our stay. The rooms are spacious and kept spotlessly clean, although can be a tad noisy at times. The food in the main evening self service restaurant and pool self service restaurant (lunch time) is excellent and covers all tastes, the steakhouse restaurant (evenings) although a limited menu is also excellent service and quality. Once again we tried the food in the Italian and Krystal restaurants and feel these could be improved somewhat. Pool areas are superb and once again kept very clean although some days obtaining sunbeds was a problem. Finally special mention to all of the staff employed here, they are a credit to the RIU chain of hotels this obviously comes from the management down.

    Fabulous Holiday

It’s difficult to know where to start, but we could not fault our holiday at this wonderful hotel and will try to keep this review brief and to the point as we could write a book on our stay. And yes we can shout out for individuals who provided us with great service but I think a shout out must go out to the WHOLE TEAM who make the RP Mexico what it is. So here is a snapshot of our stay and the things we loved...in no particular order 1. Cleanliness in all areas of the hotel - could not fault it, an army of staff start work very early in the morning to ensure public areas are spotless for the day 2. Excellent toilet facilities, constantly cleaned, all offering sanitising gel as well as the normal soap and exceptionally clean 3. Our room was large with a huge balcony overlooking the central area. Spotlessly clean, any maintenance issues sorted very speedily - our shower soap dispenser decided not to dispense soap and it was very quickly replaced 4. Food was delicious with so much choice you never got bored. The a la carte restaurants offered a chance to be served rather than buffet style menus so again great choice of food. We ate in The Gaucamole a couple of times, once to celebrate my husbands birthday where the table was decorated and he received a cake and was sung to by the waiting staff. Food was great and service excellent! We also ate at the Mexican and Fusion restaurants. 3 of the a la cartes require guys to wear long trousers but apart from that shorts were acceptable. The food in the main buffet restaurant was so good and varied you weren’t really hinting out other places to eat. Lunchtime we ate at The Guacemole or grabbed food from Pepe’s on the beach. Excellent food and service across the board. 5. Reception - what a great team and so helpful. We had several queries/requests and nothing was too much trouble and they sent my husband a bottle of Tequila and a message to wish him Happy Birthday 6. Bars - from the pool bar to bars within the hotel all were run with military precision and provided exceptional service, thank you guys 7. Entertainment - we tend to chill when on holiday and not get too involved in activities during the day but the entertainment team work tirelessly to offer about 24 different activities during the day ranging from Spanish lessons to beach and pool games and yoga as well as evening entertainment, each one of the team having a different and infectious personality and all very talented. By the way make sure you attend the white party and neon party at the Riu Tequila over the road on a Friday night...it’s the place to be. Evening entertainment was great and we especially enjoyed the Silent Disco but there was something for everyone every night! 8. Beach area - plenty of sun loungers, no need to reserve them and drinks service from the pool bar. 9. Hotel grounds - extremely well looked after gardens and outside areas and even a few animals visited the grounds from the nearby wooded area. 10. Spa - we visited for a couples massage and had a wonderful experience. You can have a massage close to the beach in the morning if you prefer to be outside 11 Pools - multiple pools including pool bars. The area around the pools was where most of the daytime entertainment took place. As I said earlier the running of this hotel is definitely about team effort and we could not fault anyone at all but we would like to say thank you to the following people who made our holiday great 1. The whole of the front desk team-think we probably must have bothered each and everyone of you with questions and requests so a huge thank you to Omar, Esteban, Karla, Eduardo, Hans, Jose,Carlos, Marie, Lorena, Isaac and Daniel. 2. Giancarlo in the buffet restaurant for looking after us in the evening 3. Rafael in the entertainment team - you have so much energy and brought so much fun to everything you were involved in 4. Helcy at breakfast - you looked after us so well 5. Francisco at the bar for excellent service at the pool bar and in the evening - very professional, pleasant and a great team leader 6. Our housekeeper who we unfortunately didn’t manage get the name of 7. All the guys serving us drinks on the beach 8. Ricoberto for excellent service and interesting chats in the bar in the evening 9. Angel for the great drinks service in the evening But a big shout out to the whole team. As Arni would say ‘ we’ll be back’ and that’s a promise!

    A great getaway....

Just returned on the 8th, spending 5 days at RIU Palace Mexico. We typically stay at the RIU Palace Riviera Maya. I wasn't a fan of the pink and purple decor; I thought it appeared a bit cheezy. The rooms are very plain and cheaply decorated. Definitely not Palace standards. We are RIU members and asked for a courtyard view and explicitly requested one without the cement barrier which blocks your view completely. Well, that's what we got. We just settled with knowing we aren't in our room that much. The food was equally as good as the other Palace. The staff isn't as friendly, but were cordial. We did say, we probably won't return. I was sad, as I had higher expectations. We had fun just getting away before the mayhem started due to the coronavirus. It appears we got back just in time.

    3rd visit to mexico

This was our 3rd visit to mexico, but first to the Riu Palace, having stayed in the Tequila before. Couple of cons/advice to note: - If you book a junior suite with TUI you are very likely to get a room with a balcony overlooking nothing. Our first room looked onto an AC unit and tennis court. We had to battle to get another room. The next we were asked to check had other guests in it! We eventually got given a 3rd room and a free 'upgrade' a couple of days into our trip, which was a room overlooking the fountains. We noted a number of guests at reception during our stay changing rooms. If you want a room with a nice view then book a Superior!! - I wouldn't class this as a 5* hotel, but perhaps for RIU standard. The rooms are generally quite tired (rust, stains on the pillows, broken tiles, balcony door not shutting properly, missing blackout curtain etc) - The walls are very thin so expect to hear people talking and slamming doors - Reception dont like complaints and often have to be reminded (it took 2 days and 4 reminders to fix our balcony door) - Although the food is marked with allergens, advice from the chefs generally varies. My partner is gluten free so we had to be very careful. Make sure you bring a translation card or ask reception if you have allergies - Beach vendors are constantly trying to sell to you on the beach, including drugs. I noted staff giving drinks and food to them Pros: - Great breakfast and lunch selection - Lovely beach and plenty of space to sit - Lovely restaurant/pool staff
