Destination Wedding/Vacation and going back next year!
My husband and I visited Feb 27 to March 5, 2020. We went for a destination wedding. Every year we take a trip to the Caribbean around this time. All in all from arrival to departure, our entire experience was absolutely amazing! I have been to several resorts within the Caribbean and The RIU Jamaica does not compare to any other place I have visited. As a travel agent and a guest for the first time at a RIU property, I know why first hand, it is such a great product. I also had very high expectations so I can bring my experience back home and sell my clients on this property. It is a smaller property and everything is localized to the center of the resort. The pools, service, food, and rooms were excellent. The beach is very calm as it is within a bay area and rock walls separate the properties. There are no waves to play in but it is very relaxing. ARRIVAL: We arrived early and got lucky because our room was ready right away. We were greeted with a welcome drink and given all the information we needed to know about the property, including the RIU Montego Bay and RIU Reggae. A bell hop brought our luggage up to our room and went through the room amenities with us. ROOM: The room was very clean and housekeeping did a great job. We only had our room serviced twice but housekeeping was accessible each morning for extra towels, bottled water, and other necessities. No problems with the room at all. We also really loved the decor. We had a courtyard view which overlooked the center part of the resort with a lovely full ocean view. The only issue with the room was the outlets were upside down. So we were only able to have 1 thing plugged in at a time. We had to have the batteries changed in the safe. FOOD/RESTAURANTS: I have a very restricted diet and had no problem finding anything to eat. I normally don't eat a lot when traveling, however, I couldn't get enough! The buffet was very clean and there was a lot to choose from but it was not overwhelming. The specialty restaurants are small and they are closed on certain days of the week. You cannot make reservations. If you want to be seated right away you need to be at the restaurant and in line no later than 5:30pm. They all open at 6pm and it is first come first seated. If you are not there, you get stuck with the buffet or you won't be seated until after 8:30pm. BARS/DRINKS: There is 1 main bar in the lobby, the Aqua Bar which is an area with tables and chairs and is also a restaurant during the afternoon for lunch. It also has the snack area. There is also a swim up bar at each pool. All the bartenders are great and absolutely no issues with the liquor and the amount they give you. The Crisp Lemonade was my favorite and you don't need many! POOLS/BEACH: The pools were clean. The beach was clean. We never has an issue getting chairs. They have Bali beds at the main pool that are free of charge and hammocks on the beach. SERVICE/ENTERTAINMENT: The service from every single staff was always pleasant and they were ready to help. There is poolside and beach staff constantly making sure you had what you needed. The entertainment during the day is definitely for adults. It is a lot of fun and BUTTERCUP is the absolute best! The night life is not crazy but it is fun. Staff was always sweeping, cleaning, picking up empty cups, etc. What to know: There are NO TIMESHARE sales pitches! If you are a smoker, whether it be cigars, cigarettes, or bud, there are only designated area's on the resort to smoke. You cannot smoke on your balcony. Jamaica has heavy laws about smoking and being fined if you are caught smoking in a non designated area. There is only one place to get pool/beach towels and they use the card system. You get a card specifically for towels and when you return the towels you get the card back. The room service was more than disappointing from the options to the actual food itself. We will be back next year with our son for his graduation and will definitely recommend this property to friends, family, and clients.
Would recommend this hotel and will definitely visit again
My husband and I have stayed at the Riu Palace Jamaica for a week in August 2019, 4 days in October 2019 and 4 days in January 2020. Each one of these times we had a great time and we would recommend this hotel. For a little context, we have stayed at many hotels in the area over the last 2 years, including the Hilton, Zoetry, Jewel Grande, Iberostar Grand, and the Hyatt Zilara. Some of these places are more luxurious, but I feel like the value for your money at the Riu Palace Jamaica is excellent. When staying as a guest here, you have access to all the other resorts (Montego Bay and Reggae) amenities and restaurants, with one exception. You can only eat lunch at the Montego Bay resort (this is the family resort). I’m not sure why this rule is in place, but just be aware of it, because we did have friends at the Montego Bay, but could only eat with them once a day. Also, take note that the Palace is more of a quiet resort, which is what we wanted and when we wanted a bigger “party” vibe we went over the Reggae. I would not want to stay on the Reggae side, because I feel like it would be really loud and I don’t like anything messing with my sleep. The food at the Palace is excellent with a good variety of items at the buffet. I have not tried any of the a la carte restaurants at the Palace or the Reggae, but that is just because nothing on the menu really grabbed my attention. This of course means I eat at the buffet all the time and I never get tired of the options there. The service overall is very good. We have had very helpful people at the front desk, at the buffet (Jamar, Philmore, Dean at breakfast and Kavan at dinner) and also great bartenders like Desrick in the lobby bar. I’ve never made a request that couldn’t be attended to. On my last trip, I didn’t like the room they had put me in, because it was very damp and had a strong cleaning chemical smell. I simply requested another room and was moved immediately. I would make a note here to say something about the rooms - there is no carpeting in the hallways, so noise can travel. It's actually better in some ways to not have carpeting, because it can eventually smell musty, which I have experienced elsewhere. I have found that the best place to stay is on the side where your room is facing the entrance to the Montego Bay resort. If you get a room on the side that is shared with the Reggae, just expect to have more noise. Also, the hotel is close to the airport, which means you can quickly get back and forth. This is great, because it means more time on vacation and less time travelling. The hotel is located under a flight path, so you are dealing with airplanes flying above you, which are noisy. I personally did not find this to be too much of an issue, but if you think it would be a problem for you, then stay elsewhere. There are 2 separate pools to enjoy, one with many activities and the swim up bar and the other is a simple rectangle shape, which is more for relaxing. I should mention something here – I am a very fair skinned person and so I can’t take being in much sun at all. Due to this, the pools aren’t the greatest for me, because there is not a lot of shade in them. I will say that I have never had any trouble finding a spot around the pool that is shaded. This is a really minor detail, but for me it makes a huge difference in my vacation. We have found the hotel to be very clean and housekeeping does a good job of keeping the rooms clean. We have never had a problem with getting our mini bar restocked each day. The hotel even gave us a few little chocolates because we were return guests. It was a small gesture, but it was a really thoughtful thing to do and the treats were very yummy. The hotel is located directly across the street from the Blue Diamond and Whitter Village shopping centres. These places have souvenir shops, a couple places to eat and get ice cream and some other shops also. There is a Burger King and a Total gas station with lots of snacks just outside the resort. These places are safe for tourists to visit (despite what the taxi drivers outside will tell you). If you want to venture out, you can, just be cautious and keep your wits about you just like you would anywhere else in the world. If you want to do an excursion, you can book through the hotel itself, but I think it’s also worth talking to one of the taxi drivers just outside the gates to see what rates they can give you to take you to your destination, because you may get a better rate. These drivers are always there, so you won’t have trouble finding someone to talk to. Also, these are all JUTA drivers, which are taxis specifically for tourists, so they are a safe way to travel. Overall, I really like this resort and can’t wait to visit again. I would recommend the Riu Palace to others for two reasons – great quality food and great value for your money. If you have any questions, feel free to DM me and I’ll see if I can answer them for you.
Me and my Fiancé went here for a week with another couple and we were not disappointed. The rooms They were cleaned to a high standard, cleaned daily sheets and towels everything you would expect was done daily including topping up the optics and in room mini fridge. (All free of course) The beach The beach was clean and the water was considerably warm. Plenty of sun loungers and beds. The bars, swimming pools and general facilities. All were fantastic plenty of Choice at two different bars the pools were great and again considerably warm. The staff Were very friendly always went above and beyond. While sat around the pool waiters brought us fresh water In the morning and would always be round to get you any drinks. Food Well this was a joke....unbelievable choice everyday, everyday was different I like that they catered for all types of food but also predominantly had Jamaican food which was unreal. Plenty of food plenty of choice all fresh and cooked to a very high standard.....what I’d do to be sat in that restaurant now!! Also the other small restaurants in the hotel were fab. Food was again a very high standard the feel was like you were dining out waited on very well. Overall the Palace is a great hotel with great vibes you can access the other hotels next door but really the Palace has all you need. A great holiday and once again Riu hotels exceed our expectations 😄😄
Wonderful holiday on the island of sunny Jamaica
My family and I had the most fabulous time at this hotel. The transfer was quite quick from Sangster Airport Montego Bay. We were checked in within minutes, and was greeted with a cool beverage and no delay in bringing our suitcases to our room. The room is lovely, it’s cleaned daily with change of towels twice daily, it has two beds queen size and double, two sinks, walking shower, hair dryer, bath, built in wardrobe with dressing gowns inside, safe, mini fridge which is stocked daily, alcohol drink dispenser included, table and a sofa, TV, there’s a balcony with chairs and somewhere to dry your swimwear. You have a card for beach towels which is given to you at the time of check in, the beach towels are near the swimming pool . The beach is amazing soft golden sand and the beautiful colours of the sea against the gleaming hot sun, the water is to die for. There’s a chef on the beach cooking delicious food everyday, the Aqua bar is open throughout the day with variety of food, the Montego Bay buffet restaurant is open for breakfast and evening meal. The steak, Italian and Japanese restaurant are open for evening meals, no reservations is required. There is aerobics class daily near the swimming pool, amazing very entertaining, the staff is very helpful and friendly, there’s also entertainment every night in the Aqua bar, and in the lounge near the main entrance of the hotel. The whole entire staff working at this hotel is amazing, thank you Riu Palace for everything, we enjoyed our time and your delicious food, my family and I will definitely be returning.
Jamaica in March
Excellent hotel. As always good Riu standard both in food and accommodation. We had a very nice spacious room, which was always clean and tidy thanks to the housekeeping and being all inclusive the spirits and bar never ran dry. Bonus of room service was most welcome as a treat. Staff all round were excellent, especially in trying conditions given the virus pandemic. Winston and Gregory in particular kept us well supplied with happy faces and drinks on the beach. Although the beach was not large, it catered for the number of visitors. Audley and the breakfast team were always welcoming to a buffet which you could not fault. And a big thank you to 'King Surge' on the dinner shift who was equally as welcoming and entertaining. The themed restaurants were very good as was the service. The hotel had one downside and that was its location at the end of the runway for Mo'Bay. We were lucky the air traffic dipped due to the virus otherwise the flights were constant. We would not have moved hotels except for the virus and Riu were excellent about the changes they had to make. Could not fault them in difficult circumstances. They like Tui were trying to deal with a fluid and very difficult time. Full marks.
