Really nice place for the price point!

This hotel really exceeded my expectations for the price point. Great beach front suite with comfortable bed + a couch and huge balcony patio (could sleep 4 in here no problem). For awareness, the bathroom area is open to the main room. Toilet has a door but shower is just frosted glass and in main room. Mini bar and booze were fully stocked daily along with 3 very large bottles of water (non potable water in sink). The resort itself is quite large and had one really big buffet along with several specialty restaurants (the best was the Italian food in my opinion). Food throughout the property is OK - nothing special, but nothing was terrible. A couple of the restaurants are menu ordering only (free for all inclusive), but others have a buffet of appetizers, soups, salads, etc. that you can supplement with menu ordered items, which are again free and included. None of the menus were huge, but they had some nicer items (like ribeyes, fillets and lobster). The drinks are decent with plenty of options, including frozen drinks, wine, beer, liquor, etc. Plenty of bars during the day, but you're pretty much limited to just the main central bar in the evening unless there is a show, in which case there is another bar over there. While it is a nice bar, it would be great to have some other options if you are there for more than a couple days. The 24 hour bar up front is more of a lobby area for people coming in or leaving to grab a snack and a drink - not somewhere you'd likely want to hang out. Plenty of pools, but all are shallow and water temperature was pretty ridiculous. By the mid afternoon, they mostly felt like bath water - they could really benefit from a chiller. The pool guy had a thermometer and got a reading of 95F once afternoon. Two of the pools have swim up bars and are adults only. The beach is large and nice with good sand and no rocks. Your mileage will vary with the sargassum - one day there wasn't much and one day it was so bad we couldn't get in the water (top tip - take the ferry to Isla Mujeres and walk to Playa El Cocal or Playa Norte for perfect water with zero sargassum). They do have tractors that clean up the seaweed on the beach every morning. Guests of this hotel can walk to the Riu next door and enjoy that property (but not vice versa). We thought the water slides would just be for kids, but they were actually really awesome. The blue one was my favorite for sure. Almost the entire staff here was super nice, especially the waiters and servers. With the exception of one really snotty waiter in the Japanese restaurant, everyone else was absolutely delightful to be around and couldn't be nicer. In summary, the pools are an issue in the summer (although even the ocean was pretty warm in May, much more so than when we were nearby in March), the food isn't the best in the world, but this is a really nice place at a very reasonable price. Be aware that you are pretty much captive here - there isn't anything walkable other than the Riu next door. Taxis charge the tourist price, so plan on $40-$50 to get to the Ferry and probably $150 for a round trip van to the airport (45-60 minutes depending on traffic). This hotel is basically at the northmost developed area for now.
