A few days in Paradise
We stayed in the RIU Cancun for 3 days before heading to Playa da Carmen. We had such a good time there. The staff were great, the Bar service was fantastic and the food was also good. Looking forward to trying other RIU's in the future.

Disappointment
Decided to go to Mexico for some guarenteed winter sun and to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Did lots of research and decided on Riu Cancun. 5 star all inclusive, buffet restaurant, 3 speciality restaurants on site, 3 pools, day and evening entertainment on the beach. Sounded perfect. Emailed to let them know we were celebrating our anniversary to ask if possible to have our room upgraded. Received a response saying that if there was any availability, they would try to accomodate. Arrived on 27th November. First impressions were good, smart, clean, large resort. We were upgraded to a suite as requested. We soon realised we had made a big mistake booking this hotel. Because of the shape of the building, the sun is only seen until 2pm latest. From around 11.30am it goes behind the building and there is no area of the entire resort that you can be in the sun still. The food in buffet restaurant is not great quality, although there is lots of variety. The Italian restaurant is the worst italian food I have ever eaten and the steak house is awful. Thank goodness the Japanese was good. The entertainment during the day consists of a lot of shouting/playing silly games around the pool and the evening entertainment isnt much better. We went to the Riu Party which is at another of the Riu hotels and that was worth going to, all ages welcome. Finally, the beach which the hoyel sits on is beautiful but tge red flag was out for 9 of the 11 days we were there, so we couldnt even go in the Sea, such a disappointment. Lots of people were angry as there is only 1 spot in the entire hotel complex that you can smoke which is the darkest coldest point of tge resort, your not even allowed to smoke on your balcony. All in all very dissapointing. Definitely better hotels out there.

Happy
The process from checking in to checking out was a breeze. The entire staff was super friendly and very helpful at all times. It was something fun always going on at the property. I would definitely stay at Riu Cancun again whenever in Mexico.

Two week stay at the Riu Cancún
I was fortunate enough to be provided with a room with a beautiful view of the ocean. The air conditioning, however, was exceptionally cold so sleeping at night without an extra blanket was difficult. The hotel was also accommodating of my diabetes by removing all pop and alcohol from the minibar fridge and only stocking water and sugar-free drinks (Pepsi light). As this was my second trip to the Riu I did not eat the specialty restaurants as the variety and quality of the food at the buffet restaurant was excellent. Booking early made a positive difference as I obtained good value for money. While I initially considered only booking for one week, the price for the second week was approximately half of that for the first week so I ended up booking for a two week stay instead. Compared to my trip last year, the beach was substantially eroded with limited guest space. While the space was at the extremes of both ends of the beach, it was generally sufficient for the guests. The weather this year was not as good as the weather last year. While I had seven days of sunshine last year, I had one day of heavy rain and another day of heavy winds during the first week as well as two days of heavy rain during the second week. I found the entertainment at the hotel lacking because I did not attend any of the parties at the Caribe. In all this was a relaxing trip at a great price.
