Nice hotel excellent staff rooms could be upgraded entertainment at the pool could be better. The music at the two pools were competing with each other. Smoking area could be better bigger closer to the action.

Just a personal opinion
***Personal opinions only here*** Location - We didn’t feel comfortable venturing out anywhere beyond the supermarket, pestered on the street opposite for trips & “want a Mexican boyfriend” 500m in the evening you’d be pestered to enter clubs/coco bongos (not our scene) Hotel - I clearly didn’t do my research properly, based my booking on the pictures/pools & the good reviews I saw. Rooms are VERY dated, bathroom rusty/moldy, I never felt clean after a shower, old mops used to clean which you can smell after the cleaners have been in. Positive - Staff are very friendly/helpful & wanting to please can’t fault the staff. Bar pool - to busy/lively for us by 12. Different music played in bar pool & entertainment pool, difficult to cope with if your lying by both. Pool closest to the restaurant is quieter, nicer & all together seems to have a more relaxed vibe, can still here 1 piece of music just enough but not to loud. Not sure how this is a 5* and can see why TUI give it a 4 rating. Entertainment - they worked very hard and huge variety of daytime activities. We won’t be returning unfortunately it’s just not the kind of hotel/atmosphere that we enjoy 8/9 hours a day. Will be doing more research in future.

Avoid the second floor.
The staff at Riu Cancun were all excellent. I saw people working non-stop, cleaning around the clock, taking drinks, clearing tables - they just never seemed to stop, and always made time to say hello in a friendly way, and entertain my basic Spanish skills. It's nobody's fault but our own that we failed to adequately research the hotel before booking and, upon arrival, learned that it has a very 18-30s vibe, with a lot of American college-age people partying hard at the main pool, clattering in at 3am, and needing the staff to - literally - wheelchair their drunk carcasses back to their rooms. Our room was on the second floor, which is surrounded by a concrete balustrade, in opposition to the glass-fronted balconies nearly every other floor has. This means very little sunlight, and a view of the sea that's 90% obscured by the tops of the palm trees. The room was basic and very wipe-down friendly, with perspex tops to most furnishings, a couple of concerningly dirty megenta chairs (see pic), but nowhere comfortable to sit. I've genuinely stayed in hostels that felt more welcoming. The bathroom fared better (and the shower was powerful), but fell victim to a creeping sewage aroma overnight. We also had the world's loudest fridge. A door can be closed to muffle the sound slightly, but it continually churns awake throughout the night. The walls are thin, and the lengthy corridors have nothing soft to absorb sound, so people slapping their feet towards their door 30 rooms away echoed along it all, as did the slamming of the doors and nocturnal habits and chatter of people in adjacent rooms. The main pool areas were dogged with the party-hard crowd, but there's a quieter area with a smaller pool sheltered away from this, however the neighbouring hotel and the Riu itself prevent the sun from reaching it mid-afternoon. There are several restaurants (two of which we never saw open), but the options for non-meat eaters from the a la carte menus were so threadbare we never escaped the main buffet for the entire week, which was well stocked, but sadly became repetitive and was also not a great friend to vegeterians. Upon check-in, we discovered that the door to the balcony had no lock at all, the safe didn't work, and the toilet wouldn't flush! Maintenance fixed two of these issues within 30 minutes and added a new lock to the door the following day, but the fact it was this problematic from the start was a concern that didn't instill much confidence. Ultimately, it's possible rooms on higher floors are a lot nicer (we asked about changing but they had nothing available), but given that the hotel is reportedly 5 Star, a colossal disappointment.

Cancun
Great location with lots to explore and do. Only draw back was although very clean hotel is dated, It also had too much of a party vibe for us.
