Everything wonderful!
Rio Cancun is a wonderful resort with delicious and varied food, but the best part is the service from the staff - everyone is smiling, attentive, and very friendly.

This resort failed to pick us up at the airport and told us it was our problem to find a way to the hotel.
Be very cautious booking this hotel, particularly directly with the hotel and outside of a package. We booked directly on their website, and was promised free return transportation as part of the booking, but no one was there to meet us (we were on time). We spent 45 minutes on the phone with the hotel, being put on hold and passed around mostly, before an employee told us we had to find our own to the hotel. That cost $117 US for 2 people which is an insane amount (coming from Canada). At the hotel no apology was ever given. The front desk staff denied it was their responsibility and told us to talk to Departure Services, the company they sub-contract transfers to. That company of course said they only take direction from the hotel. After wasting time every day trying to resolve this, and providing the email proof of their failure to reply to my last email on December 11th, on day 5 of a 7 day trip I was finally assured I would have a shuttle back, but that no refund would be provided because I hadn't given them enough notice of my flight # (not the departure time, just the flight #) for my return flight on December 23rd. I said that was not an acceptable reason to refuse to pick us up on December 16th. The next day I was told I would be refunded the amount for the taxi, and multiple staff behaved as though they were doing me some kind of favour instead of the bare minimum. Guess what - 15 days later no refund within the 7-14 day window promised. I have stayed with RIU hotels in different cities around Mexico, for a total of 5 stays now, and something goes wrong every single time. Never again.

4 night stay
We just got back from a 4 night stay. We love to stay at Rius and typically do a Palace. But with our large group, this was more cost effective. The food was as you would expect, typical resort food. The steakhouse was a favorite. The hotel was definitely older and in the hotel zone, which I would prefer to stay in other areas (Playa mujeres for example). The most annoying thing was chasing the sun after 2:30pm. The building is situated where it blocks the sun in various spots starting at about 11am. We were really moving around trying to be in the sun. If you're looking for a cost effective, all inclusive and don't care about all the extras, this is a great choice. If you want a little more bang for your buck, spend some more money and go elsewhere.

Really bad experience at this place
Our experience wasn’t good. We booked our hotel for 5 nights. We left at the 4th day because the cockroach in the room and shower. I called the front desk at midnight to get some help They sent a guy to kill them with a raid can and, also the guy took them with him. When I booked the room I picked a ocean view, our view was a white building. We stayed at room 738, which is the very last one in the hallway, right next to the maintenance/ cleaning room. We picked this hotel because not even a year ago we stayed at RIU Las Americas and we were thought on knowing more hotels. We were very disappointed, the last night I didn’t close my eyes because of the cockroaches. Other than that everything else was ok, the building needed a remodel, the ceiling in the bathroom was falling apart, also the mirror got the stains for a very old one. I have pics and video of the cockroach. Thank you

NOT a "5 Star Hotel"
Old hotel that's seen decades of young partiers. Sterile hallways, spartan rooms, scary and wonky elevators - total budget feel for a "5 Star" hotel. Staff are generally great, who have to work in a hotel long overdue for a total reno. When u turn on the bathroom light at night the dumb window in the bathroom illuminates the entire bedroom! Very noisy rooms - sounds like your neighbours are in your room. Beds r comfortable. This place is always nickel and diming you - no shampoo (just body wash), no moisturizer. You ask for more Kleenex or toilet paper: "Go to reception, por favor." Thanks a lot. Burned out light in shower. Beach is small/rocky compared to neighbouring hotels. Food is hit and miss - New Year's Eve banquet was great, but Italian resto dishes were full of salt. Salmon in the Japanese resto very good. Avoid steak in the "Steak House", lol. The Rib eye I had was tough as hell and chewy. When u arrive late at this "5 Star All-Inclusive", do not expect any hot, or good food. Just refrigerated pre-cooked dogs and burgs u have to heat up in the Sports Bar via microwave. Wow. That's 5 Star cuisine, baby. This place is for folk uninitiated to luxury or to truly 5 Star hotels - it's a great place for 20 somethings to drink their face off all day and tan their tattooed bods in the pools with loud music. Anybody else, stay away and go to a true resort. Few activities for guests. No tennis courts as per advertised. Incredible! Shows are hit and miss - some of them are good, Anybody used to quality and refinement - STAY AWAY!
