Generally Good!
Generally a good stay, food was good except when the main chef was away. The resort needs to understand that some people avoid pork for religious reasons and keep it separate from other meats etc. The labelling of the foods is important too. Locals were kept to one side of the resort when I visited and I have no complaints about them. Some of the European visitors were unmannerly in my opinion. Some rooms are not up to standard and I had to change rooms. The staff are helpful but most don't speak much English. The beach was good with enough chairs and shaded palm trees. It's an older hotel and overall I enjoyed my stay. Sunwing travel from Toronto was disappointing -- they rip you off at every turn, baggage, exit tax ... Go with Transat Vacations!!!

A Budget-Friendly Resort With Room for Improvement
Playabachata Resort, Puerto Plata (November 16–23, 2025) Travelled with: Friend Room Type: Standard Room I recently stayed at Playabachata Resort for one week with a friend, and I wanted to leave an honest and balanced review to help future travelers decide if it’s the right fit for them. Check-In & First Impressions The check-in process was not very efficient. There was help with luggage, which was appreciated, but the front desk staff seemed distracted, possibly due to technical issues. The grounds themselves are nice, and the overall layout felt manageable and walkable. The rooms were clean, but they are definitely small, dated, and in need of upgrades. Room Experience We stayed in a standard room, which was tidy but extremely compact. The bed was clean but not particularly comfortable. A major issue was the frequent blackouts—sometimes lasting several minutes, sometimes longer—mostly at night. While they didn’t ruin the trip, they were inconvenient and contributed to a feeling of unpredictability. Additionally, the toilets didn’t always flush properly, which was frustrating. Food & Drinks Food was one of the weaker parts of the experience. The buffet was underwhelming, and some of the food (especially in the snack restaurant) was often cold. We didn’t try any à la carte restaurants, so I can’t comment on those. The cappuccino from the café was surprisingly good, and the drinks were okay but nothing special. Beach & Pool Areas The beach was a highlight. Lots of available loungers (though many were old and worn), minimal seaweed, and great swimming conditions. The pool area itself was clean, but the resort became extremely crowded on the weekend with local guests. Towel service was easy and efficient. The music at the pool was not great, and they kept switching songs mid-track, which affected the atmosphere. Service & Safety Most staff were friendly and helpful—except for the team trying to sell upgrades, which happened frequently and felt intrusive. On our very first night, we had a drunk guest banging on our door for two hours (4–6am). We called for assistance, but the situation was not handled quickly, which was unsettling. Overall, I felt somewhat safe, but there were moments that gave me pause. Cleanliness The resort grounds and common areas were generally clean and well maintained. Entertainment & Activities We didn’t participate in the nightly entertainment, but we did take an excursion to Paradise Island, which was excellent and absolutely worth doing. What We Enjoyed • The small, easy-to-navigate layout • The beach and swimmable water • Paradise Island excursion • Strong cappuccino What Could Be Improved • Quality and temperature of food • Room upgrades (beds, bathrooms, flushing issues) • Handling nighttime disturbances • Weekend crowd control • Music quality at the pool • More consistent sense of security Overall Impression Playabachata is best suited for budget travelers who prioritize beach time and don’t mind older rooms, basic food, or a more “no frills” resort experience. While we still made the best of our trip, I wouldn’t likely return given the mix of safety concerns, food quality, and general upkeep

Wonderful Experience
We took a trip with family & friends from October 31 to November 7. Our experience at the Hotel was wonderful very clean and very well maintened, the staff was friendly but the only problem was with the locals coming from Friday to Sunday very rude and pushy at the Buffet cutting the line to rush to get food but other than that it was fine. Going back in April 2026 we enjoyed our stay there would recommend this Hotel. Thank the staff for a wonderful stay.

What a S*%T HOLE
Resort was over run with the local population and dirty. They were pushy and ignorant butting in line everywhere. Couldn't get near the bar for a drink, when they saw us tipping they would block 3-4 deep to keep us away. Staff were drinking with their local buddies and ignoring us. Kids were eating in the pool spitting out melon seeds into the pool. Parents changing kids diapers on the pool deck and just leaving the dirty ones laying there. Garbage dropped where ever they pleased, felt sorry for the cleanup staff. Went 2 days before the room safe was repaired. Water in the shower was barely warm. Food was decent but hard to get as locals would push in line and reach over you for everything. Couldn't get anyway near the shows/entertainment so can't comment on them. Never again will i ever waste my time with this s*%t hole. I wouldn't even give it a 1 rating but site doesn't allow anything lower.

Great human talent, very worn out infrastructure. Pics are nice with no people, it can get very crowded!
People really do a good effort to make you feel good, 100 pesos tip will improve that in time. We were assigned a room where the sliding door in balcony would not open unless lifted and pushed strongly. Bathroom shampoo and conditioner dispenser, glued to the wall was missing the container and when asked tor repair or room change, they sent a nice guy with shampoo in a cup. The detachable shower would not stay in place to shower, and to top it all 2 cockroaches were waiting for us in the closet by the security box. Rooms air conditioning is fixed to 23 Celsius. Honestly do not know where the 5 star hotel rating comes from. After 3 day complaining, for a 2-week-stay, we were assigned another room in better conditions. There are very limited places for the "special dinner" night and you can only have 1 per day and max 2 in the week. I stayed up all night playing on the PC at the reception where there´s WI-FI, that actually works better overnight when no one´s around. It is true they do charge the least expensive night in DR at least from Air Transat packages, if you can pay little more per night I suggest you do. The beach is amazing. The food is varied and in general very good and tasty. Again muchas gracias a todo el personal que nos hicieron sentir lo mejor posible en nuestra estadia con elloos.
