    Definitely not a 5-star experience!!

    With the time I have on my hands now, I can finally get around to my to-do list! One of these tasks was to write my review from our vacation last year. My husband and I spent a week at the Yucatan Princess Resort and we have A LOT to say. Let's start with the cons because we definitely ended our trip on a negative note. CONS: 1. We booked with Sunwing vacations and it was part of the package that it is a “relax resort” meaning late check-out is available until 4pm depending on availability. First, the reception tried telling us it's not part of the package but once the only helpful Sunwing representative (thank you Anais) came to speak to them in Spanish, it was all of a sudden included. We were then told to come back one day before our check-out because they couldn't guarantee us anything at that time. I explained to them that I have anxiety and needed the room that day because we'd be without one for almost eight hours. The receptionist Karina really did not care about what we had to say and was not helpful whatsoever. We came back the day before and now we're being told to come back before 6pm. No one seems to know much at the reception to say the least. Being tossed between Reception and Concierge (Omar tried to help but did not get anywhere with that), I was finally able to speak to the Reception Manager Hector Cortes and he wasn't helpful but rude instead. Hector did not help in any way actually instead Hector told me there was availability but it needed to be paid for now. I explained that our package included the late check-out however everything became a money game for them. 2. Our Sunwing representatives were quite useless to say the least. On our “welcome meeting,” which was our first morning at the hotel, Glenn sat us down and immediately tried to sell us more excursions, even when we told him we had already booked one on the flight. I've been to many of these meetings on resorts before and this was by far the most unpleasant. Luis C was not helpful whatsoever when I came to him to ask for assistance with the check-out issue. Altogether, we felt helpless seeing as this is the company that is supposed to aid when need be. 3. Another awful experience was having ants in our room!! At first, I thought we shouldn't worry too much about them and I'd kill about 5/day, but one night I came back to find the retainer (in a case) that I put in my mouth every night had about 75 of them inside. I obviously freaked out and rinsed it right away so I unfortunately do not have a photo of this incident. 4. Every time we’d go to the towel service, they always seemed to be out of towels even though the resort wasn’t all that busy! 5. There was so much construction noise throughout the resort with no actual changes that we could see after a whole week of being there. 6. Oh my goodness - this one was annoying! The workers were constantly asking us to book spa services (even while we're lounging in the pool!) the walkway from the lobby to the buffet had two different tables of people bugging you to book a service. You can say you’ve already booked a service, but they will still continue to bug you - how relaxing! 7. Seaweed makes our beach unswimmable. Go to the neighbouring resort instead! 8. All a la cartes have waitlists! It just taught us to have more patience. 9. One hostess was trying to make us buy a bottle of wine in order to get a spot in an a la carte restaurant (unlimited a la cartes are included in our package). I couldn’t believe it. She was basically saying if we pay, we’d get it quicker! I wasn’t prepared to be scammed. Once I told her I was aware of what she was trying to do and I’d speak to a manager about it, we were let in right away. Appalled! 10. The room was never made up normally - whether or not we left money (a tip). It was literally a hit or miss. Examples include towels not replaced (simply taken away), garbage not taken out and the fridge not replenished with water bottles or soft drinks (we’d basically have to call every day once we returned to the room). PROS: I do want to mention our positives that we found about this resort, just to be fair and you'll know that this is a genuine review. One nice thing was the strong wifi throughout the resort. We never seemed to have any issues with that (even when I brought my cellphone into the pool!). Another nice thing was the modern decor of the grounds. Something else to make note of is the delicious à la carte restaurants on the resort. We especially enjoyed the Tao Teppanaki experience. Rodeo Grill was another one of our favourites and shoutout to Miguel who was so good to us! The buffet was pretty normal food with some pretty kind servers. Thanks to our hostess Abihail who immediately remembered our seating preference and our sweet waitress Alicia who went above and beyond! It's good to know that the buffet has lobster night on Thursdays. Bars were always on the ball with our drinks, especially Eugeno the bartender at the main pool bar. Another thing we enjoyed was the show every night. They really try to mix it up every night and these dancers sure are talented! Lastly, you can enjoy the grounds of the sister resort next door! This includes their à la cartes and their beach (which most people go to because this end is all seaweed). Hope this review is helpful!!

    Place is overrated beach is non existent not spending money to sit in a pool so don't come here if your a beach person same night shows from years ago time to Change it up place is super quite after 10 just a lame disco with a few people inside had ant problems in room buffet nothing special,room service menu a joke pathetic attempt at pizza and a tasteless club sandwhich room sometimes wasn't changed by 4

    This resort is everything it claims to be! Pack your to go cups for the bartender to fill, holds more than the plastic cups available and keeps your drinks cold longer! Our swim up room was located in a building furthest from the lobby, near the spa. This location is perfect if you prefer the quieter location. Spent our mornings on the beach and returned to the privacy of the swim up room pool for the afternoons. There is a "party pool" area so make sure you are specific in requesting room location. Food and bar service is outstanding. Note the bar at the beach does not open until 10am so fill your cup up at the bar on your way to the beach. The sales people are roaming the beach daily but very nice and not a bother if you just say no thanks. Would recommend only exchanging enough currency to tip, not necessary for anything else.

    Another top notch vacation.

    Just returned back on Sunday from PYP with my wife. From start to finish you could not find a better group of wonderful people. I must start by mentioning Sunwing Airlines for providing our flights with top notch service and professionalism. Upon our arrival at PYP we were greeted by Diego who couldn’t welcome you any better. He remembered us the entire week with a smile and hello. Our room was 3003 swim up unit.A big thank you to Adolfo at the check in for his efforts to get us this great location. It was near the active pool and was kept clean and spotless by our maid(unfortunately I had written her name down but have misplaced it) We thank her very much.We love the size of this resort and the fact that it is adults only and is so easy to find your way around. We went to all the a la carte restaurants including the Tao teppanyaki cooking show which was so entertaining. Our favourite was the Aroma . Miguel our waiter was so amazing we had him on two different occasions and he remembered our names what we drank and provided 5 star service. At the buffet Bryan was our waiter for breakfast and lunches multiple times. He is awesome and such a nice guy to talk to and provided us with daily entertainment updates. A big thank you to all the bartenders, waitresses, chefs and support staff too many to name but fantastic all around. The entertainment was top notch this trip from the shows at the plaza and the theatre. Very talented people. The animation team at the pool, beaches, and at night was always so happy and upbeat and provided enjoyment everyday. Eder was our favourite. We had met him on our first visit to PYP in 2017 and it was great to see him once again. We now have been to the PYP twice and the sister resorts Sunset/Riviera 3 times and we are so impressed by the service and enjoyment level every visit. Thank you to the Princess family for giving us such fabulous memories. Gracias

    Relaxing Vacation

    We are a middle-aged couple and stayed at this resort March 6 - March 13. We arrived late due to our flight delay but were pleasantly surprised by the gracious check-in at the Platinum lobby which include sparkling wine. It was quick and painless and we were taken to our room within minutes. I think we had the friendliest, most helpful bellboy ever - thank you Israel! I took a quick peek in the bar fridge and noticed that there was no diet cola, Israel immediately arranged to have a couple of bottles brought to the room! We also had a bottle of sparkling wine, 3 x 200 ml tequila/rum/vodka and some fruit waiting for us. Impressions of the room were good: very modern and in good repair. The A/C was comfortable and the bed, although firm, was comfy. I did find sink counter space lacking and I really found the bathtub useless. Storage space was somewhat lacking as well. We were in 5123 which was on the second floor of building 5 facing south. We had a nice jungle view and frequently saw coatis passing by. The location was extremely quiet and we usually didn't have an issue getting a Bali bed. We had booked a lot of excursions which took us away from the resort most of the day so I can't really comment too much on the day time entertainment/activities. We went to the main pool for the foam party and it was ok. Maybe we're just long in the tooth but I really don't get what all of the hype is about. We also went for Mexican Day and did enjoy that. The Mexican food that was set out was really tasty and we loved the Mariachi band. The pool games were fun as well, hubby almost won a bottle of tequila. The one thing we noted was that the drinks at the main pool bar weren't nearly as good as the pool bar at building 5. We attended a few of the live music shows at the plaza bar and were really impressed with those: Cuban, Mexican and Jazz night were all really good. The plaza bar had awesome drinks as well and the churros were a delight (available between 5 - 6 pm). The other entertainment nights we attended were the Micheal Jackson show, Mexican night and the Fire Show - all really impressive. Although these all started at 10pm, they were worth staying up for! Casino night was a lot of fun as well. I got a quick lesson in how to play blackjack and found it really addictive. Thank you Felix for the lesson and making it so much fun! Our food experience at the buffet was as many others have said; the food is good, not top tier, but you shouldn't have a problem finding something. One awesome bonus was the breakfast mimosa bar - this was genius! I loved making my own, or having it served, what a great way to start the day. We tried the Rodeo and enjoyed eating in the bird cage as part of our Platinum perk. Again, food was good but not great. I had the burrito and hubby had fish. I wish I had tried the steak because it did look very nice. We both found the Aroma meal underwhelming, I had the baby chicken dish stuffed with apple/lime that I really didn't like. The lime rind permeated the meat and gave it a very bitter taste. We had a pretty decent chicken parm and beef scallopini meal at La Bruschetta but the service was terrible. Our waitress was obviously having a bad night and didn't want to be there, I found her rather surly. We were given one drink refill each and then she disappeared, we never did get our desserts. This was definitely an anomaly, all of the other staff we encountered were extremely friendly and hospitable. The star of our meal experience was the cooking show at the Tao - wow! Great show, really great staff and the meal was fabulous. We wish we'd eaten there for all of our dinners. For all of our a la cartes, we showed up around 6 and never had an issue getting a table. We also tried the beach snack bar and it was ok. We tried the hamburgers, jerk chicken and nachos and fries; I definitely preferred the food at the buffet. We had an issue with extreme wind blowing everything all over and a coati that insisted on sharing meals. We also tried the ice cream shop on the Riviera side. I didn't care for the ice cream, it had a "grainy" texture that was unpleasant. Perhaps it was the two flavours I tried but I never went back. We spent very little time at the beach because we found it very windy. Perhaps just the time of year? Every day we were there was a red flag day so we didn't bother swimming. There was no issue with sargassum when we were there, they seemed to be on top of the little bit that did wash up. Finding a lounger in the shade wasn't an issue. We did spend some time at the pool adjacent to our side of the building. Again, we were gone a lot so it wasn't a lot but we found it very pleasant when we did go. Water temperature was coolish but I got used to it quickly. We were gifted a couple of floaties which was a nice way to spend time in the pool. A lot of guests leave them behind and we paid it forward when we left as well. We found that the waiter taking drink orders only came around occasionally but that wasn't a huge issue for us. The bar isn't that far away! As far as tipping went, we didn't go overboard but found that it didn't really seem to matter whether you tipped or not, service was great either way. I had pesos with me but noticed most people used USD. I left 20 pesos for the maid as well as 20 for the bar fridge refill person every day. I usually left 20 pesos for every round of drinks and 50-100 for dinner depending on meal type and service. A few things of note: there's a book exchange adjacent to the concierge desk at the Platinum lobby, the selection is pretty decent. There are also some snacks and juice here as well. We took the shuttle service in to Playa del Carmen so we could stock up on biodegradable sunscreen/repellent, liquor and souvenirs. For 50 pesos each way, this is a great deal. The concierge will provide you with the shuttle schedule. I needed to have some documents printed and the concierge will do this for you as well. You will need to attach your document to an email and send it to the concierge. There are desktop computers available in the lobby if needed. If you want a great view, go up to what is the Skylites restaurant during the day while it's not in operation. The doors are open and you have a lovely rooftop panoramic ocean view. We watched a troop of monkeys climbing through the trees while we were up there. Access is via a staircase or elevator between the Plaza bar and the Yucatan buffet. If you've upgraded to platinum, do take advantage of your perks! We left the water circuit until the last day and regretted it. We went at 7:30 pm (closes at 8) and were kicking ourselves when we realized it also included the sauna. The hydro pool was amazing at night. We were quite happy with our stay and would consider staying here again. I'm not sure the platinum upgrade was worth it. I think for the same price, we'd try the junior deluxe swim out in building 1 or 2. I know I'd prefer to have my bathtub in the bathroom! Regardless, I don't think you'll be disappointed with your stay.
